When the going gets tough, the tough step up and "Magic In Giving" is what Rotarians live for. Thanks to continuing generous contributions from people like you our dynamic club was able to support a significant number of charitable projects last year. Just to highlight a few we: Continued to deliver Meals on Wheels to local homebound residents Purchased and distributed over 2500 dictionaries to local inner city schools Provided a sizeable grant in support of the Environmental Charter High School in Lawndale Awarded over $30,000 in scholarships to Mira Costa and El Camino students Provided an X-Ray machine for a surgical clinic in Mexico Donated funds to a shelter home in Fiji for abused and neglected children Assisted with funding for a cornea eye transplant clinic in Panama Purchased and distributed mosquito nets for Malaria prevention in Africa Without your generous donations, none of this would be possible. Our next Magic In Giving event will be held at the world famous Comedy and Magic Club, Hermosa Beach on May 8 th, 2009. We need your help now to raise money for future worthy projects to be overseen by our incoming president, Jan Rhees. How you can help In these difficult economic times, the disadvantaged and poor of the world will look more and more to Rotary International for help in maintaining or providing the very bare essentials for their lives. This can be in the form of providing potable water, medical care, medicine, housing, schooling or clothing to those less fortunate than us. Your sponsorship will assist our club and Rotary International to fulfill those needs. Recognition Of course, when you donate to an organization like the Manhattan Beach Rotary Club it is to further the lives of those less fortunate than ourselves. However it is also important to note that your contribution is sincerely appreciated and recognized by our members and the local community. Members of the Manhattan Beach Rotary Club include the City Mayor, the City Manager, the Chief of Police, the Fire Chief and many other prominent civic and business leaders in the local area.
Where does your contribution go? The Manhattan Beach Rotary Club has five avenues of service. International Service International Service encompasses efforts to expand Rotary s humanitarian reach around the world and to promote world understanding and peace. It includes everything from contributing to the global eradication of Polio to helping Rotary Youth Exchange students adjust to their host countries. Community Service Community Service is the opportunity the Manhattan Beach Rotary Club has to improve life in the local community. It encompasses activities such as distributing meals on wheels to providing awards to our local teachers and public safety officers. Vocational Service Vocational Service involves club members serving others through their professions and aspiring to high ethical standards. Rotarians, as business leaders, share skills and expertise through their vocations, and they inspire others in the process. Club Service Club Service focuses on strengthening fellowship and ensuring the smooth functioning of our club. Youth Service Youth Service recognizes the youth in our community as our future leaders and humanitarians. Rotary empowers them by promoting literacy, providing scholarships and supporting local Interact and Rotaract Clubs, the precursors to Rotary.
Your $ - DIRECT - to people in need The Manhattan Beach Rotary Club s administration costs are paid by our members in the form of dues. We also volunteer our time to implement our charitable projects. This means that 100% of your contribution goes to the people that need it the most. This is just some of the places where your money could go this year: $500 will purchase five holiday gift baskets for needy families. Put together by Rotarians. $1,000 will sponsor the Mira Costa Model UN team. $4,000 will house and school a youth exchange student from another country here in Manhattan Beach for one year, fostering international goodwill. $10,000 will purchase 2000 mosquito nets, potentially saving 66 lives in Africa. $15,000 will purchase 1000 dictionaries for inner city children, Rotarians will distribute them. $25,000 will provide scholarships to ten worthy students, each one vetted by our scholarship board.
Past projects Last year contributions from individuals and organizations like yours contributed to these projects and many more initiated and performed by the Manhattan Beach Rotary Club. Local projects Delivered meals on wheels, twice a week, 52 weeks a year. Collected over 3000 books for the SoCal Reading by 9 program. Provided over $30,000 of scholarships to Mira Costa and El Camino students. Provided funds and manpower to help open the Environmental Charter High School of Lawndale. Donated supplies to the Good Shepherd school. Purchased and distributed dictionaries to at risk children in LA. Assisted in providing holiday gifts and food to over 100 needy families. Participated in a local Habitat for Humanity project. Awarded Manhattan Beach teachers, fire and police officers for excellence in their fields. International projects Provided physical therapy and rehabilitation equipment to a Santa Rosalia clinic. Donated funds to a shelter home in Fiji for abused and neglected children. Partnered with Watts/Willowbrook Rotary Club in a trip to Zambia to distribute mosquito nets. Donated and delivered a X-ray machine to a surgical clinic in El Fuerte, Mexico. Partnered in a project that provided corneal transplant surgery to low income blind people in Panama. Hosted an Open World team of five entrepreneurs from Russia. Hosted a youth exchange student from Denmark.
