GOAL Join your colleagues for UPMC Hamot's 10th annual Cardiovascular Update Conference and gain the latest updates and practice guidelines in cardiovascular care! This full-day symposium offers a comprehensive review of new diagnostic techniques and therapeutic treatments, the latest clinical trials, and state-of-the-art technology in contemporary cardiovascular medicine using concise didactic presentations combined with a panel discussion and case presentations. Electronic handouts will be made available to conference attendees. Following this course, the participant should be able to formulate a practical approach to common cardiovascular disorders; identify the appropriate tests that can be used to determine the severity of the patient problem and make an accurate diagnosis; discuss the various treatment options available; and recognize how to treat and when to refer cardiac patients. This activity is expected to result in increased confidence in making a diagnosis and providing effective treatment, referral, and follow-up care with the overall goal of improving patient outcomes. TARGET AUDIENCE Family physicians, internists, cardiologists, cardiovascular thoracic surgeons, advanced practice providers, nurses, and other health care professionals who treat and care for patients with heart disease will benefit from attending this educational activity. OBJECTIVES At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to: Identify and describe the current patient selection process and techniques to perform left atrial appendage closure Review indications for advanced cardiac imaging Review interesting cases where advanced imaging assists in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular conditions Discuss key factors of an ideal nutrition plan for heart failure patients Discuss barriers patients face in maintaining an ideal diet Discuss implications of readmission related to discharge planning and patient morbidity and mortality outcomes Determine which patients should be tested for a state of hypercoagulability Discuss implications for hypercoagulability Review interesting cases and cutting-edge treatments in cardiovascular medicine Identify and describe the continuum of pulmonary embolism Distinguish stable ischemic disease from acute coronary syndromes Discuss the appropriate use of testing in stable ischemic disease Describe drug classes and mechanisms in stable ischemic disease Summarize the role of lifestyle interventions for patients with ischemic disease Discuss key elements to consider when referring patients for interventional treatments for ischemic disease Review pathophysiology and hemodynamics of cardiogenic shock Discuss contemporary treatment strategies and outcomes for cardiogenic shock

AMA ACCREDITATION The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. AMA DESIGNATION The University of Pittsburgh designates this live activity for a maximum of 6.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits.
