THE AUXILIARY VOICE Official Newsletter of the Auxiliary to Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War Volume 4, Issue 1 Fall 2016 FROM THE NATIONAL PRESIDENT I express my gratitude for the overwhelming support of the Sisters of the Auxiliary to Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War in electing me their National President. I have been a member of the ASUVCW for the fifteen years, serving in numerous positions at the Auxiliary, Department and National levels. I take pride in continuing a family tradition of service, as did my great-greatgrandfather Joseph Friedle, who, at the age of 19, volunteered and served in Company H of the 35th Wisconsin Infantry. Joseph served as the company musician and scout. During the Battle of Spanish Fort, Alabama, he was wounded in the left arm just above the elbow when shot by a sharpshooter. The bone was shattered and his arm subsequently amputated. Afterwards, he convalesced at the National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Dayton, Ohio and Milwaukee, Wisconsin, precursors to the modern Veterans Administration Hospitals. He remained active in veteran affairs and later served as commander of his local post of the Grand Army of the Republic in Milwaukee. In recognition of Joseph and his comrades service to our country, I proudly continue my work in this Order. My activities include public speaking engagements on the Civil War and the Allied Orders, supporting local veterans facilities, attending Civil War related events, and collaborating with the Brothers of the Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) and reenacting groups. As your National President, my goals include providing further instruction to Sisters interested in the philosophy of Servant Leadership, improving support for new local Auxiliaries, increasing membership, and building a stronger relationship with the SUVCW. In Fraternity, Charity and Loyalty, I am your humble servant, Denise Bernadine Oman, ASUVCW National President Any letters, articles, etc., published in The Auxiliary Voice do not necessarily represent the views and/or opinions of the ASUVCW, officers, membership, guests, or the editor/publisher. VOLUME 4, ISSUE 1 THE AUXILIARY VOICE PAGE - 4 - National Encampment Summary This is a summary of decisions made by the Delegates to the 2016 National Encampment in Springfield, Illinois. These are NOT the official proceedings, but are provided for informational purposes. Items are not listed in any particular order. 1. The resolution to amend the Constitution to remove the U.S. citizenship requirement failed. In accordance with the current Constitution, Rules and Regulations (CR&R), only Departments, not Auxiliaries-at-Large, are allowed to vote. Written documentation of each Department s vote is required and verbal confirmation by Delegates at the Encampment is not acceptable. The Order has sixteen Departments. Six Departments voted no, either in whole or in part. Of the remaining ten, written documentation of their vote was not submitted and therefore the resolution failed. 2. A Department-at-Large will be established, to which the Auxiliaries-at-Large will be attached. This is an effort to give the Auxiliaries-at-Large better representation and more support from the National Organization and better representation. 3. A Special Committee on Bylaws Review was established. All Departments and all Auxiliaries must submit current copies of their respective Bylaws to the committee. The committee will review each set of bylaws to ensure they are not in conflict with the Constitution Rules and Regulations (CR&R) as well as IRS requirements. A suggested generic template will be created for the use of Departments and Auxiliaries. 4. The Special Committees on Job Descriptions and Girl Scouts were discontinued. These committees have completed their purposes. The task of keeping the Job Descriptions up to date will now be the responsibility of the standing National Committee on Policy and Procedures. 5. Sisters who have been awarded military medals may wear them at Auxiliary functions, providing the Auxiliary Badge is worn in the place of honor (closest to the heart). 6. Every Department is encouraged to develop some sort of formal recognition or award for those Sisters whose efforts go above and beyond in the work of the ASUVCW. 7. The national budget presented by the National Treasurer was approved with the following amendment: Should there be a profit generated by the National Supply Officer, that 12.5% of that profit (not to exceed $500.00) will be allocated to National President s Scholarship Fund, and an additional 12.5% of that profit (not to exceed $500.00) will be allocated to a veteran-related charitable organization of the National Supply Officer s choosing. 8. The Order s national newsletter, the Auxiliary Voice, may be issued in two versions. One version will be delivered via U.S. Mail and may contain full contact information for all National Officers and Committees. A second version will be delivered electronically and for posting on the national website, and shall not contain personal contact information for the National Officers and Committees. 9. The Forms and Documents Committee was tasked with revising the current Membership Application Form to include the amount of the National fee, and to indicate that each Auxiliary and Department may

VOLUME 4, ISSUE 1 THE AUXILIARY VOICE PAGE - 5 - impose additional fees. The committee was also tasked with creating a Junior Membership Application Form, which will include language about legal guardian responsibilities. 10. The incoming National President shall issue a General Order, similar to that issued by the SUVCW, regarding the requirements for filing IRS Form 8976. Department and Auxiliary Presidents will please contact National Treasurer Mary Flynn for assistance in complying with these requirements. The National Organization will reimburse any new Auxiliary s $50 filing fee, providing they have worked with the National Treasurer to comply with all IRS requirements. 11. Department websites and Department Facebook pages wishing to have their sites linked to from the National website shall contact the National Webmaster. 12. A Sister may belong to as many local Auxiliaries as she wishes; however she must pay dues in every Auxiliary and must claim one as her home Auxiliary. That Auxiliary must pay her Department Per Capita dues. The term Dual Member no longer exists and should not be used for any Per Capita calculations. 13. Submission deadline dates for the national newsletter, the Auxiliary Voice, shall be posted on the National website, on the Order s official Facebook page, and in the Auxiliary Voice itself. 14. The National Supply Officer shall investigate options for obtaining flags and poles for purchase by Departments and local Auxiliaries. These items will not be stocked by the National Supply Officer, but will be made to order. 15. Information regarding the National Encampment s Thursday evening training session(s) will be posted ahead of time on the National website and in the Auxiliary Voice to better inform those Sisters who may wish to attend. 16. The Policy and Procedure Committee has been tasked with establishing an official procedure for recognizing those members of the other Allied Orders who have gone above and beyond to support the ASUVCW in its mission and goals. 17. The office of National Washington DC Representative was eliminated. The CR&R Committee was tasked with removing language pertaining the office from the CR&R and the Ritual Committee was likewise tasked with removing language pertaining to the office from the Ritual. 2016 Scholarship Recipient Allison A. Rosa of Allston, Massachusetts Sister Allison is a member of the Gilman E. Sleeper Auxiliary No. 60, Dept. of New Hampshire and is a descendant of Private James Walsh of Company I, 6th Massachusetts Infantry. Sister Allison attends Suffolk University Law School in Boston, Massachusetts. At right: Sisters Cynthia Brown and Mary Flynn accept the scholarship certificate on behalf of Sister Allison from NP Linda Kronberg at the National Encampment in Springfield, Illinois.

VOLUME 4, ISSUE 1 THE AUXILIARY VOICE PAGE - 6 - Trea$urer Time What an awesome year 2015-2016 was. Financially, we exceeded our projections in receipts and kept our spending well within the budgetary limits that our voting body approved. Thankfully, I did not need to bother the Council for any additional monetary requirements. Each and every one of our members contributes in so many ways for the good of the Order with good deeds and financial support. I appreciate this so much and every Sister deserves to be recognized. However, I want to specifically mention the following: Our immediate Past National President Linda Kronberg was a joy last year and she made no unexpected requests of me. Our previous National Secretary Tricia Bures dutifully sent reports and deposits my way and for that I am grateful. The two fundraising officers from last year, National Chief of Staff Wanda Langdon and National Patriotic Instructor Hope Parker, performed their jobs beautifully and ensured that the deposits made were precise and well documented. Kudos to you both! The Sister that I certainly could not have survived without was our National Supply Officer Cher Petrovic. Her support and diligence, not to mention her great enthusiasm is wonderful and I am afraid I did not do a good job of letting her know how much I value her efforts. So I am giving her a great big shout out THANK YOU!! CHER PETROVIC. It was a fine year with a tremendous team of dedicated ladies. I am anxiously looking forward to working with this year s newly elected officials and I wish them the very best. If anyone has any financial questions whatsoever, please don t hesitate to write or call. I am now available Monday-Friday before 10:30 AM and after 2:00 PM (Eastern Time Zone) with some availability over the weekends. In Fraternity, Charity and Loyalty, Mary Flynn, National Treasurer Sisters Supporting Women Veterans The Sister Anthony O Connell Auxiliary, Dept. of Ohio is hard at work on their project of Sisters Supporting Women Veterans. They made a delivery of personal care items, movies and magazines to the VA Center in Dayton in September. Plans are to hold a baby shower for a pregnant veteran on October 1st.

VOLUME 4, ISSUE 1 THE AUXILIARY VOICE PAGE - 7 - Chaplain s Chapter Thank you for electing me to the office of National Chaplain. I am honored to serve and look forward to hearing from many of you. Sisters in Need of Prayers and Special Thoughts God bless you each and every day, And keep you in His care, God grant your peace and happiness And answer every prayer. Anita Davis (Ohio), recovering from hip replacement surgery and death of mother Florence Jennison (New Hampshire), bone cancer Mindy Eckler (Pennsylvania), recovering from a stroke Barbara Franklin (Ohio), sudden death of her husband Anne Sosnowski (Maine), death of mother-in-law Rachel McReynolds (Tennessee), health issues Tracy Jenkins Williams (Maine), sudden death of her husband Jan Harding (Chesapeake), recovering from open heart surgery Communication is very important to me, and is vital to this office. If anyone knows of a Sister who is sick or in distress, please let me know as soon as possible. For those Sisters with Facebook, I am continuing the closed group titled Chaplain's Corner, ASUVCW, so that reports of illness or loss can be quickly shared between the local Auxiliary, Department, and National Chaplains. We have a document within the Files section for an ongoing Prayer request list for those Sisters who may wish to pray for our Sisters in need. I am also using this group to post devotions on a regular basis. One other area I would like to encourage us to step up in is praying for our soldiers and veterans. I would like to ask the Auxiliary Chaplains to forward a list of their membership for the following Sisters: 1. Those who are currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces; 2. Those who have previously served in the U.S. Armed Forces; 3. Those who have a spouse or child currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces; and 4. Those who have a spouse or child who previously served in the U.S. Armed Forces. If you could, please send their names and addresses to me at your earliest convenience. It is my intention to regularly lift up in prayer our veteran and active military Sisters and their families, as well as sending care packages to our active service members. I know that some of our Auxiliaries like sending packages to our servicemen and women serving overseas. It seems appropriate that we should send cards, letters, and packages to those within our Allied Orders family. The Chaplains Corner Facebook page can be utilized to share this list with our sisters. The quickest way to reach me is via email at Wanda@TeamLangdon.com. My telephone number is (513) 843-7511. Please feel free to leave a message. If you have any questions, concerns, or just want to chat, please do not hesitate to contact me. In Fraternity, Charity, and Loyalty, Wanda Langdon 930 Locust Lane, Cincinnati, OH 45245 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7

VOLUME 4, ISSUE 1 THE AUXILIARY VOICE PAGE - 8 - From the National Chief of Staff I want to sincerely thank National President Denise Oman for the appointment as the National Chief of Staff. I consider it a great honor and privilege to serve her and the organization in this responsibility. I am looking forward to a rewarding year. This position requires fund raising to help offset some of the operating cost of the Auxiliary. So, I will be working hard on ideas for fundraisers and pray that they will be fruitful for the Auxiliary. Any monetary donations to the Chief of Staff should have checks made out to the National Organization ASUVCW with a notation to Chief of Staff Fund. Please send to Elizabeth Craig, 4622 W Mill Road, Milwaukee, WI 53218. Donations will be logged and forwarded to our National Treasurer. I can be contacted via email at Elizabeth_Craig01@yahoo.com or call me at (414) 217-2553. I look forward to a rewarding year, and hope to see as many of you as possible. VOLUME 4, ISSUE 1 THE AUXILIARY VOICE PAGE - 9 - Ruminations of the Patriotic Instructor Thank you for electing me your National Patriotic Instructor for the 2016-2017 term. I consider it a high honor to be serving you in promoting our organization. I am already busy helping to honor our veterans and will be attending Headstone Dedications, Memorial Services, and actively collecting items for veterans here in the state of Michigan. I will be attending the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States at Congress in Pensacola, Florida in October, and the Gettysburg Remembrance Ceremonies in Pennsylvania in November. There is no greater honor than to see to the needs of our servicemen that have given so unselfishly to protect our freedom. To quote Abraham Lincoln, To care for him who shall have borne the battle, his widow, and his orphan. Another duty of the Patriotic Instructor is to raise funds for the organization. I was amazed that several Sisters had made a donation to our fundraising efforts before I had even left the National Encampment. This speaks highly of the organization that we all serve. It solidifies the importance that each one of us plays in seeing that our organization continues to grow and prosper. Anyone wishing to donate items, crafts, and your talents to the Patriotic Instructors fundraising efforts please feel free to contact me through the National Website. Respectfully in Fraternity, Charity and Loyalty, Jan Davis, National Patriotic Instructor Historian s Reflections As I was looking for an article to write, I stumbled upon an old blue ritual (1930) that happened to peak my interest. Looking through it, I noticed some of the long lost rituals of the meeting ballot boxes placed on the platform beside the pedestal of the president, when our sisters used the ballot box, the handle was kept in the right hand and the box was placed on the Guide s left shoulder for the president s inspection at the end of the vote, visiting brothers were obligated at an auxiliary meeting, passwords were whispered, inside guards opened the wicket, and after initiation, the treasurer would be first to give the new sister the grip. During the initiation, the Past President would have the duty to call the new member s attention to the vital importance of cherishing and cultivating the tie of sisterly love, which should exist not only between yourself and this loyal band of workers with whom you today take your place, but the same feeling should extend to every member of the Order we represent and to the Union Soldier, Sailor, or Marine, and their families, whether members of any organized body or not. They are our Brothers and Sisters, co-heirs in the grand inheritance our fathers won in a baptism of fire and blood, and to us are confided their interests. See that you proudly guard the charge and preserve the love and esteem of the fraternal family to which you have been admitted. Our past sisters took an oath almost identical to our current oath, in addition to proclaiming that they will not wrong a member of the Order, but will always protect her when within my power. Our sisters of the past were patriotic, vibrant leaders, caretakers of our veterans and our history. We should all be proud of the heritage they handed to us. In Fraternity, Charity and Loyalty, Danielle Michaels, PNP National Historian

VOLUME 4, ISSUE 1 THE AUXILIARY VOICE PAGE - 10 - Why Servant Leadership? On Thursday at the 2016 National Encampment, a seminar was presented on Servant Leadership. The program was met with such encouragement from the attending sisters, that future articles will be included in our newsletter on a regular basis. So, why should we embrace Servant Leadership in our organization? Our Mission Statement or Principles of our Order call us to action- to commemorate the deeds of the veterans of the Civil War, as well as carry on our charitable works. The Servant Leadership philosophy is an application of the philosophy of service to the practice of leadership. As members we need to first know the Mission of our Order. To form a better understanding of it, we need to know- what does it look like to be an active member? How does it feel to be a member? What do you do as a member; what do you do as an Auxiliary; what do you do as a Department? Servant Leadership begins with a wish to serve, to help others, and to participate in a cause. That is why we joined this Organization and not any other worthy groups. We see a need to carry out the mission of the Order. Our helping out has the potential of creating changes in society. We provided scholarships to worthy scholars, we have erected, maintained, and/or restored monuments to our forefathers for future generations to know of their deeds and sacrifices. We have provided for our needy veterans and their families, and have taught our United States History so as to bring our ancestors efforts alive and with purpose. Servant Leadership is not a mere philosophy but an attitudinal and behavioral concept. So we must act in confidence, bring others along our journey, and produce more servant leaders through example and teaching. The power of servant leadership was founded by Robert K. Greenleaf. He formulated 10 characteristics found in Servant Leadership- Listening, Empathy, Healing, Awareness, Persuasion, Conceptualization, Foresight, Stewardship, Commitment to growing others, and Building community. Each concept will be discussed and we will examine how we apply these concepts to the Auxiliary. These concepts will seek to nurture our abilities and talents to do great work. Let s start with the first concept on Listening. Listening is one part of communication but it is more than that. It is a social skill that allows us to interact with others. It is a commitment we make to hear or understand others and interrelate that communication with our knowledge. If Servant Leadership seeks to identify the will of the Order and helps clarify that will, then we must diligently get in touch with our inner voice to seek understanding of what our mind is communicating. We need to first reflect and know our self; we must understand our beliefs, standards, and values before we can interact with others. We need to understand the difference between fact and opinion. Reflection of self and what one heard/understood is essential for interpersonal growth. Each one of us is accountable for our actions and interactions within the group. A Servant Leader needs to focus on listening to the will of a group and help clarify that will. The leader listens receptively to what is being said. A leader will question for verification. By focusing on what is being said can be a moment of growth. When we listen, we are not forcing our understanding on to others but rather hearing the reasoning and concept of others. A servant leader does not interject her personal agenda but consents towards the good of the Order. So I invite you to practice this skill in all your communications. Let me know how this works for you. In Fraternity, Charity and Loyalty, Danielle Michaels, PNP
