4-H Winterfest 4-H Teen Leadership & Community Change Conference January 25-26, 2014 Registration Deadline: January 15, 2014 Your Cost: 62.00 ($20 scholarship available from 4-H Council upon completion of request form) This exciting teen conference has teens and adults from across the state converging on to learn leadership and civic engagement skills to use to make a difference in their communities. The conference is open to teens 12 years and up and adults. It has sessions for both the 4-H and non-4-h members. There will be several session options to choose from including public speaking, global leaders, anti-bullying, team building, healthy living, and MUCH MORE!! Registration fee is $62 Register at the 4-H office or online: http://events.anr.msu.edu/4hteenleader14/ 4-H Animal and Veterinary Science Camp The Michigan 4-H Animal and Veterinary Science Camp is a new five -day pre-college program held at Michigan State University (MSU) in partnership with the MI 4-H Youth Development, MSU Department of Animal Science, and MSU College of Veterinary Medicine. Youth will explore fields relating to animal and veterinary medicine as well as participate in numerous hands-on learning activities. Participants will also gain animal handling experience while also having the opportunity to visit and explore MSU farms and facilities. Throughout the week, youth will work their way through a veterinary science case study as a team and will create a presentation to be critiqued by veterinarians. This is a fun and interactive camp that will allow youth to conduct activities, ask questions and problem-solve. Additionally, this camp will help youth explore various animal related career fields while also reflecting on their experiences and community programs. Michigan 4-H Animal and Veterinary Science Camp will be held June 23-27, 2014 on the campus of Michigan State University is for youth ages 13 to 16 years of age (as of January 1, 2014). Youth will spend 2 days learning about many different project areas while meeting youth from around the state. Winterfest offers participants an opportunity to experience in an overnight camp setting. Youth will participate in hands on sessions that range from crafts to shooting sports. Winterfest is also an opportunity to spend time outdoors enjoying all that Michigan winters have to offer! Youth will also have the opportunity to go sledding/tubing, snow shoeing, and cross-country skiing. You ll learn about animal health, management, care, and nutrition. In addition, you can sharpen your livestock judging and evaluation skills. By sharing ideas and interacting with others, you will find ways to improve your county 4-H livestock program. The workshop also offers ways to enhance your communication and teaching skills, and learn about the many opportunities available for those interested in beef, sheep or swine projects. Open to adult and teen volunteers aged 13 and older. You can also participate in hands-on demonstrations that teach you how to help members recognize healthy, sick or injured animals. Meet 4-Hers who has developed outstanding veterinary science projects and gain ideas to help others start their own vet science projects. Open to adult and teen volunteers aged 13 and older. MSU Green & White Swine Show Youth Education Fair & Open Market Hog Show January 24-25, 2014 Registration Deadline: January 6 The annual Green & White Hog Show and Youth Event will be held on January 24 & 25, 2014 at the MSU Pavilion. Again this year, showmanship will be held on Friday evening. Saturday will host the other educational contests and the Open Show. All events are free and open to the public. Educational contests will include: quiz bowl, essay contest, skillathon, and promotional and educational power point contests in addition to showmanship and market classes. New this year, there will be an educational session held on Friday afternoon to explore meat science and meat judging. The deadline for entry for this event is January 6, 2014. Additional information and entry forms can be found at: http://www.ans.msu.edu/uploads/files/ GW_Entry_Info_2014_Final.pdf Michigan 4-H Film Festival Submission deadline Feb 14 This is your opportunity to share everything 4-H, including your club, mentoring, or afterschool activities, service projects or favorite 4-H project areas. 4-H members and volunteers can enter a video in one of four categories: Narrative, 4-H Commercial, Revolution of Responsibility or Documentary. This unique festival will take place entirely online and all videos will be posted through the Michigan 4-H Film Fest YouTube Channel. Descriptions of each category and forms are posted at the link above. If you have limited experience with video production but want to use this as an opportunity to grow your skill set, you can participate in the self-paced course online at http://campus.extension.org/enrol/index.php?id=838. How to Submit Your Film: To participate, please go to the events page to download the submission and release forms. Once a submission form is submitted to the film festival, participants will receive the password to upload their video to the YouTube Channel. All filmmakers will compete with those in their age group. There are three age categories: 13 and under, 14 17, and 18 and older. Official prizes will be announced in January. Possible awards include: 4-H T-shirts for the video crew, a flipcam, an ipad mini and video editing software. The council researches and helps resolve environmental issues by working with state and local government. M4-HYCC advisors and teens attend a fall, winter and spring planning workshop/meeting with the teens, meet occasionally by conference call and help prepare the youth for their presentation to Michigan legislative committees in April. Program participant fee for this program is $150, which includes lodging and meals for 4 overnight retreat meetings for the program. Please promote this opportunity to teens and adults. Michigan Youth Dairy Ambassadors Applications due January 10, 2014 Are you a young person with a passion for the dairy cow and/or the dairy industry? If so, then the Michigan Dairy Ambassador Program is for you! A completed contest application packet must be submitted to the Great Lakes Regional Dairy Conference (GLRDC) via email attachments to honkemeg@anr.msu.edu by January 10, 2014. Candidates will receive email receipt confirmation. Paper applications will not be accepted and applications submitted after January 10th will not be considered except under extenuating circumstances. All candidate applications will be reviewed by the Michigan Dairy Ambassador Program Committee. Up to six finalists in each division will be invited to interview at the GLRDC on February 7, 2014. Final candidates will be judged by a committee of three dairy and/or industry representatives. 4-H Capitol Experience March 16-19, 2014 Lansing, Michigan Registration: $310 Application deadline: February 7 Have you ever wondered why it takes so long for government to pass laws? Have you ever considered how many people are involved in the process and the roles they play to bring about the laws that govern our state? Do you know what roles you can play in influencing your community as well as your state government about topics teens are passionate about? Please consider attending 2014 Michigan 4-H Capitol Experience. Attending Capitol Experience will give you a very intense experience exploring the workings of our state government. This 4-day conference will walk you through the steps and introduce you to the MANY people that are involved in the process. You will choose a current issue affecting teens and have the opportunity to interact with legislators, state agency staff, lobbyists, and other experts to discover how policy is made. Your issue group will also get to take a turn at the legislative process by proposing a bill to the Capitol Experience legislature. Throughout the conference you will also have the chance to explore several career fields in the process. Ingham County 4-H Transportation Committee provides a $50 scholarship for up to 4 youth to attend the conference. Conference attendees are also welcome to work with their club, school, and 4-H staff to generate additional donations to help offset the registration fee. Ingham County 4-H members enrolled in high school (at least 14 years old) and would like to attend Capitol Experience should complete online registration by February 7, 2014. Please note that Capitol Experience has been added to the list of programs eligible to participate in the MSU Pre-College scholarship program for youth going into 8-10 grades fall 2014. At least one youth attending this event will be given the opportunity to submit a Pre-College scholarship application

Arthur Berkey Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources Sciences Fair Proposals due: February 15, 2014 The goal of the Arthur Berkey Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources Science Fair is to stimulate student interests with regard to the scientific process. This contest is open to both 4-H and FFA members. Awards will be presented to the top three places in Divisions I IV for all five areas. Monetary Awards will be presented to each individual or team. Divisions I and IV will receive $175.00, $100.00 and $50.00 respectively for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each category. The contest will allow students to research one of the following topics using the scientific process: animal systems; environmental services/ natural resource systems; food products and processing systems; plant systems; power, structural and technical systems; and social systems. http://www.michiganffa.com/association/ applications/m_agriscience.html Marge Karker Farm Bureau Scholarship Application due January 10 The Michigan Farm Bureau (MFB) is accepting applications for the Marge Karker Farm Bureau scholarship program, which aids students enrolled at Michigan State University (MSU) who are pursuing degrees in agriculture through a two-year, four-year or post-graduate program. Three students will be selected and each will receive a $1,000 scholarship to apply toward their 2013-14 tuition. The deadline to apply is Jan. 10, 2014. Scholarship interviews will take place in late January. The scholarship program is available to students after completing one year at MSU. Applicants must be from a Farm Bureau family or have their own Farm Bureau membership. In addition, they should have a scholastic average, as indicated by MSU of 2.6 or above on a 4.0 scale. Candidates should also be prepared to show financial need upon request. Finalists will be interviewed by the MFB Promotion and Education Scholarship Committee. The Marge Karker scholarship program is administered by the MFB Promotion and Education Department and honors the memory of Karker, a pioneering promoter of agricultural health and safety programming. Application forms are available at https://www.michfb.com/mi/ Ag_Ed_and_Leadership/ Scholarships/Scholarships/ Youth Entrepreneurship 5th Annual Michigan Young Innovators Competition Entries due January 31, 2014 A competition for youth entrepreneurs that will provide Michigan youth with start up capital to launch their own business!!! We want students to submit their ideas in the creative format of their choice! This can be anything from a video pitch to a Prezi presentation to an audio recording - however they can best explain and illustrate their ideas! The creativity of their ideas as well as their method of delivery will be taken into account, so we are looking for out-of-thebox thinking! This competition is open to full time students who are in grades 9 12 for the 2013-2014 school year. Membership in the Emerald Clover Society is bestowed upon former Michigan 4-H youth members with significant professional achievements and/or service to their communities and society. Membership in this society is by nomination and review committee selection only. The selection committee includes state and county 4-H volunteers and staff members, Michigan 4-H Foundation trustees and current Emerald Clover Society members. Nominee selection is based on evidence of three or more years of 4-H youth membership, professional and business achievement, leadership in community service and philanthropy, contributions to or impact on American society, and significant leadership and achievement as a 4-H member. Nominees must be living.

But technology can also be a great tool to support communication and learning between 4-H volunteers and participants. The third session of the 2013-2014 North Central Regional Volunteer e-forum offers tips for connecting to new technology for 4-H volunteers. It will also briefly explore ideas on integrating technology into 4-H projects to enhance the life skill development and 21st century skills of young people. Volunteers are invited to tune into this session of the 2013-2014 NCRV e-forum with local 4-H staff and other adult leaders on Tuesday, January 14, 2014.
