Round 6: Championship Final FIRST YEAR PROGRAM EARNS NCAA DIVISION I CHAMPIONSHIPS BERTH The Sam Houston State women s bowling team, a first-year program, is headed to the NCAA Division I National Championships in Detroit, Mi., April 14-16. The Bearkats will join defending national champion Fairleigh Dickinson, Arkansas State, Central Missouri, Kutztown, Maryland-Eastern Shore, Nebraska and Vanderbilt in the field. The 2011 NCAA Division I Women s Bowling Championship will be hosted by the University of Detroit Mercy and the Detroit Metro Sports Commission on April 14-16 at the Skore Lanes in Taylor, Michigan. All eight berths in the national tournament are at-large selections. The selection criteria were overall won-lost record, head-to-head competition, results versus common opponents, overall strength of schedule and overall RPI. Obviously, we re excited and this has been a goal all season long for the entire team, Sam Houston head coach Brad Hagen said. But, to me, what s even more important about our selection as a first year team is what this does for the sport of college bowling. This group has shown that a first-year program can make it. You get what you put into it and these girls have worked so hard to achieve what happened today. Members of the team headed to Michigan are freshmen Neishka Cardona from Carolina Puerto Rico; Kimi Davidson from Azle, Texas and Shaina Woolbaugh from Kirkwood, NY, and juniors Dayna Galganski from West Palm Beach, Fla,; Lisa MacAllister from Kemp, Tex. And Aida Sanchez from the Domincan Republic. The inaugural Sam Houston women s bowling team won one tournament, placed in the top three in four others and finished no lower than eighth in any of their appearances. The Bearkats finished the regular season with a match record of 68 victories and 35 losses. Bearkat Bowling Bios 17 NEISHKA CARDONA Freshman Carolina, Puerto Rico Neishka Cardona of Carolina, Puerto Rico, comes to the Bearkat Bowling Program with a huge amount of international experience and exposure. Most recently, she returned from the CONCECABOL tournament in Guatemala where she competed at the international level representing Puerto Rico. Her team won seven medals and Cardona had a part in earning four of those medals. The freshman earned silver medals in singles and Masters events, bronze in mixed doubles and a gold medal as a member of Puerto Rico s championship team. During the tournament, she produced an individual pin fall average of 185. Cardona is currently a member of the Puerto Rican Youth National Team and has been a member for the last two years as well as a member of the 16 and under Puerto Rican Youth National Team in 2007. She s qualified and competed in many world renowned events such as the PABCON Youth Championships in 2008/2009, Aruba Youth International Tournament where she won the singles event and the Caribbean Youth Christmas Tournament where she finished fourth in the Master s Division. The accomplishments, the commitment, her knowledge, and experiences this young lady has thus far is amazing. I am absolutely honored to have the opportunity to coach her and for her be a part of this programs inaugural and historic season, said head coach Brad Hagen. Cardona has consistently qualified and participated in such events as Jr. Gold and Teen Masters in the United States since 2008 as well as The Tournament of Americas. Cardona comes to the SHSU Bearkat Bowling program with an unprecedented 19 plus international medals earned in the last three years alone. 11 KIMI DAVIDSON Freshman Azle, Texas Kimi Davidson from Azle, Texas was the first bowler to sign with Sam Houston s new NCAA Division I bowling program. As she did for her Azle High School team last year in the Greater Fort Worth area, Kimi has made a tremendous impact to this team s success, head coach Brad Hagen said. Kimi provides a will and a passion for this game that is much more mature than her age. She has blossomed into a smarter, more determined and very agile player because of it all. Davidson was a top bowler for Azle High School, experiencing both athletic and academic success. She maintained a grade point average of 3.8 and averaged a 200 in bowling. She has been bowling for 12 years and qualified in the 2006, 2008, and 2009 Teen Masters tournament. She has also been the All District State Qualifier and team captain for the last three years. Kimi has provided the team with a consistent effort all year long, Hagen said. That effort truly paid off and will continue to do so during her Bearkat career.
15 DAYNA GALGANSKI Junior North Palm Beach, Fla. Dayna Galganski from North Palm Beach Florida, arrived at SHSU with two years of competitive collegiate bowling experience already under her belt and has been a consistent leader for the 2010-11 Bearkats. She was named as Most Valuable student-athlete at the Florida A&M Rattler Classic after leading the Bearkats to a first place finnish A transfer from the University of Central Florida, Galganski had outstanding success posting five top five finishes, one victory, and back to back Collegiate All American Honorable Mention honors. Dayna has been a great addition to this roster. She has made an immediate impact right from the get go as a leader and as a major contributor on the lanes and in the class room, SHSU bowling coach Brad Hagen said. The addition of her experiences, drive, and intensity is exactly that little extra that has allowed SHSU to contend right out of the gates. Along with Galganski s successful collegiate career on the club level, her time with Jr. Team USA was just as impressive posting some very notable accomplishments while competing internationally. While representing Junior Team USA and competing at the 2009 Tournament of the Americas Galganski went on to win three gold medals, two silver and one bronze. Since 2006 she also added some regional success with while participating in the Kegel Youth Point Series winning four titles (three women s division champion, one overall [men & women] division champion) as well as continues to qualify and contend at the national level through Junior Gold which is one of the largest youth national tournaments in the world. Lisa MacAllister is a junior college transfer from Trinity Valley Community College. At Trinity Valley C.C. MacAllister had a 3.8 GPA and was a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honors Society. She was named as a member of the Region XIV Collegiate Academic All Conference Team. Her TVCC and her high school bowling honors at Kemp include selection to the academic all star team and all city team, two-time sectional champion and a conference championships among other things. Lisa has continued to provide this team with all the right attributes that made her stand out a Trinity Valley, SHSU head coach Brad Hagen said. Lisa has matured, improved and developed into a player who is fearless when facing a challenge. She has provided the team with some key pins which ultimately affected the final outcome. What she lacks in experience, she has made up for with maturity, poise and determination which at times has been the key to our success. 3 LISA MacALLISTER Junior Kemp, Texas
12 AIDA SANCHEZ Junior Santo Domingo Dominican Republic Aida Sanchez of Santa Domingo in the Dominican Republic brings more than 15 years of bowling experience with international competition in countries such as Aruba, Dominican Republic, Panama, and Puerto Rico, and two years of collegiate bowling developmental education. Aida s passion for bowling along with her burning desire to compete and win in collegiate competitions, are motivating factors that have reflected on very positive results for the team s accomplishments and her own this season, Hagen said. Aida s empathy toward other team members is an important element in fostering teamwork and a strong attribute that she ll bring to the table among teammates She has matured and developed two-fold this year, which has made her an excellent leader. Her enthusiasm and up-beat personality has been a focal point to this team s success, especially when the going got tough. Sanchez has represented her country with pride and has been a current member of either the Dominican National Youth Team and or Adult Team since 2004 respectively and has had much success to date in her international competitions. Aida joins the Bearkats as a transfer from Wichita State University with an 3.1 GPA Shaina Woolbaugh from Kirkwood, New York, came to Sam Houston State with a resume of a seasoned veteran. The All-Conference player of the year and varsity captain led the way for her Windsor Central High School team for the last three years. Shaina s determination and willingness to learn, adapt, and retain information has been a key asset to her success and is one of her very strong attributes, said head coach Brad Hagen. Shaina has accepted her position on this team and become a key contributor to our success. Her precision and accuracy when called upon have cultivated into key turning points and have elevated this team s momentum on numerous occasions. BRAD HAGEN Head Coach Brad Hagen, a U.S. Bowling Congress (USBC) Silver certified coach with more than 15 years of competitive experience at the regional and national level, joined the Bearkat staff as head coach for the new Sam Houston State women s bowling program on July 1, 2009. In it s first season, the women s bowling program has been a consistent Top 10 ranked squad and completed the regular season earning a berth at the NCAA Division I Women s Bowling Championships in Detroit as a first year program. When we began women s soccer as a start-up sport seven years ago, we brought in our head coach a year before we started competition to give ourselves the opportunity to get started on the right foot, Williams said. Brad Hagen brings enthusiasm and a wealth of experience in the sport of bowling. He will hit the ground running, working to identify and recruit quality student-athletes, scheduling for the 2010 season and building community support for our 17th varsity sport at Sam Houston State. A native of upstate New York who picked up his first bowling ball when he was five years old, Hagen competed in more than 70 collegiate tournaments for Morehead State in Morehead, KY. During his collegiate career, the Eagles were one of the toprated club teams in the nation. Hagen holds bachelor s degrees in both management and marketing from Morehead State. Establishing and developing an elite competitive NCAA women s bowling program is such an exciting challenge and opportunity for me, Hagen said. I grew up in an area where bowling was a huge winter sport so bowling has always been a very positive and influential part of my life. For several years I ve been working with high school and college athletes. Now, to have the chance to build a Division I program into a regional and national contender is a dream come true. Hagen worked as an academic sales consultant professional for Cengage Learning in Florence, KY, since prior to his arrival at Sam Houston. He held numerous university staff assistant positions at Morehead State where his management and communication skills were defined. Sam Houston State now competes in 17 intercollegiate sports at the NCAA Division I level as a member of the Southland Conference. Men s sports are football, basketball, baseball, golf, cross country and both indoor and outdoor track and field. Women s sports include volleyball, basketball, golf, tennis, soccer, softball, cross country and both indoor and outdoor track and field.

Sam Houston 2011 Women s Bowling Season In Review Inaugural bowling team aims for national title (published 12-2-2010) In nearly a century of intercollegiate athletics at Sam Houston, the Bearkats have won eight national championships. The last title came in 1982 in softball. Now, starting in 2011, a Bearkat team appears to have the potential to increase the university s national championship trophy collection to nine. The opportunity comes in the university s newest sport - women s bowling. Head coach Brad Hagen s squad of seven bowlers burst onto the NCAA Division I bowling scene this fall in spectacular fashion. Playing in major intercollegiate tournaments in Missouri, Delaware and New Jersey, the Bearkats finished as runner-up in one event and third in two others. The bowling team s fall record of 29 victories and only 12 losses includes 18 wins over teams listed in the National Tenpins Coaches Association 2010 preseason top 20. Sam Houston has defeated nine of the top 10 teams including victories over defending NCAA champion and No. 1 ranked Fairleigh-Dickinson, 2008 national titlist and No. 2 Maryland- Eastern Shore and 2007 NCAA champion and No. 4 Vanderbilt. We certainly have gotten the attention of everyone in the college bowling world, Sam Houston head coach Brad Hagen said. Our seven girls have done a tremendous job this fall. Our level of preparation, competitive nature and NCAA record prove that we are not just another first year program. Now we are gearing up for the second half of the season. We want to remain on course towards our goal of the NCAA championship in Detroit in April. We ve turned heads, but we still have to go out and prove we re a contender. The Sam Houston bowling team opened its first season with a victory over rival Stephen F. Austin at the International Bowling Training and Research Center in Arlington. Starting the program s history with a win over our arch rival was a tremendous motivational factor, Hagan said. As one of the first events in the new Arlington facility, it also brought Sam Houston major exposure in the bowling world. I m so proud of how are team has performed on the national stage. The inaugural Sam Houston bowling squad consists of Texans Lisa Cummins, Kimi Davidson and Lisa MacAllister; Florida s Dayna Galganski; New Yorker Shaina Woolbaugh; Neishka Cardona of Puerto Rico and Aida Sanchez of the Domincan Republic. The bowling squad has earned a reputation not only for success on the lanes but also as strong supporters for the other 16 sports teams at Sam Houston State. Every home game, unless they re at a tournament, the bowling team is in the stands giving their support, associate athletic director for student services Chris Thompson said. These young ladies have embraced the college experience and are having a great time. Galganski, a junior from West Palm Beach, Fla., who was a gold medalist at the 2009 Tournament of the Americas, loves the college game. The biggest difference between intercollegiate bowling and playing as an individual is having six teammates right there with you, rooting for you and giving encouragement, Galganski said. The whole team spirit thing is great. One of the best things about Sam Houston State is all the activities. It s great going with my teammates to events like Firefest and Homecoming and supporting our other sports teams. It s exciting and fun. Competition in tournaments across the country makes up the Bearkats schedule. During the spring semester, Sam Houston will travel to Arkansas, Nebraska, Alabama and Tennessee seeking to earn a berth in the NCAA championships April 14-16 in Detroit. There are two types of team matches at the tournaments. One day, teams will play traditional matches with each individual s scores combined for a team total to decide the result. Squads also meet in Baker format matches that are like a tennis dual match or match play in golf. The bowlers square off in one-on-one match-ups with the first team to win four of the pairings declared the winner. Results from the first two days of competition are used to determine seeding for the final day with the top four teams battling for the championship. This fall, Sam Houston qualified for the top grouping each of the finals competitions. In bowling, strikes are fun but spares win, Galganski said. We ve set getting to the NCAA nationals as a team goal and so far we re on track to get there.
BATTLE OF THE PINEY WOODS Arlington, Texas - October 17, 2010 The Sam Houston women s bowling team opened its first season of competition with a victory over Stephen F. Austin Sunday afternoon. The event has held at the International Bowling Training and Research Center. Sam Houston took games in standard format by scores of 960-874 and 949-939 to put the Bearkats at 2-0 in NCAA Division I competition after their first tournament. Danya Galganski stepped up for the Kats with two clutch strikes in game two in her fill balls in the tenth to match SFA s Nicole Parkhurst first shot strike and nine-spare 20 pin total. Galganski s 28 pin fill in the tenth solidified the win for the Bearkats after a must have second strike and took game two by 8 pins and a 943 to 935 victory for SHSU. The Lumberjacks jumped out to an early lead in game 2, as SFA rolled seven strikes in the first two frames. Sam Houston rallied, though, and the pin count was dead even heading into the anchors final frames to set up Galganski s clutch performance. We had a game plan and a goal to execute and we did exactly that, Hagan said. This was a great way for the team members to start their NCAA careers as a team. It will be a great motivational factor going in to Missouri. I m extremely proud how the girls came together that second game and took on adversity and turned it in to triumph. The 10-team competition was held at Enterprise Park in Springfield. Arkansas State won the final 4-2. The Bearkats had defeated ASU 4-2 in the opening round Sunday then fell to Elmhurst 4-0 before the final match. Overall in the complete team standings for the three-day event, Sam Houston placed third behind Arkansas State and Central Missouri. Arkansas State went 12-1 during the tournament while Central Missouri and Sam Houston both posted 8-5 records. Sam Houston s Dayna Galganski finished ninth in the voting for the Greater Ozark Invitational all-tournament team. Neishka Cardona posted the tournament s ninth best pin average of 192.6. Galganski averaged 185.2 pins to rank 18th in the individual standings. Highlight of the tournament was Saturday s play when the Bearkats went undefeated in five matches including a 945-912 victory over host team Central Missouri, the No. 5 rated team nationally. NEW JERSEY JAMBOREE Teaneck, New Jersey - November 5-7, 2010 Sam Houston s first year women s bowling program served notice that the Bearkats are a power to be respected as SHSU defeated defending NCAA Division I national champion Fairleigh Dickinson on their home lanes. The victory came in the fifth match of the first day s action by a score of 762-699. The Bearkats also rolled up victories over No. 7 Delaware State, No. 15 Saint Francis (NY) and two wins against No. 4 Vanderbilt in the tournament. In the win over FDU, Sam Houston jumped out with a 15-pin lead after match one and never looked back. I was very proud of what the girls did today on day one of the tournament, Sam Houston head coach Brad Hagan. Once again it was a tough demanding start to the day but we ended on a high note that only few teams ever can say they have accomplished and thats not only beating the No. 1 rated team in the nation and defending NCAA National Champion but doing so respectively at their own tournament. (5gms) UMES HAWK CLASSIC Millsboro, Delaware - November 19-21, 2010 The Sam Houston women s bowling team continued its winning ways by finishing third in a 20-team field at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore Hawk Classic. Fourteen of the 20 teams in the event are nationally-ranked. Sam Houston posted a 10-3 record in the match including wins over No. 7 Delaware and No. 10 Sacred Heart Sunday. Central Missouri handed the Kats a tough 4-3 loss in the semifinal matchup. Maryland Eastern Shore won the team title, the Hawks first championship in the six years UMES has hosted the event. The Bearkats defeated Delaware State 4-2 and Sacred Heart 4-3. The tournament completed the Bearkat bowlers fall schedule. Sam Houston s season match record now stands at 28-13. The Bearkats started the tournament Friday with victories over No. 19 Morgan State 864-687, No. 15 Saint Francis (New York) 747-694, No. 2 host UMES 752-748 and No. 9 Kutztown 813-767 before falling to No. 8 New Jersey City 764-735. Saturday, the Kats bounced back from an opening loss to defending NCAA national champion Fairleigh Dickinson to post four wins. Three of the four victories in team total pins play were over nationally ranked opponents. After falling to FDU 996-933, Sam Houston defeated No. 7 Delaware State 1,004-999, No. 10 Sacred Heart 1,044-901, No. 13 Adelphi 1,044-960 and unranked Monmouth 889-812 to run the Bearkats overall record for the UMES event to 8-2. All in all this was another great tournament for us, head coach Brad Hagen said. Our level of preparation, our competitive nature, our NCAA Record proves that we are just not another first year program. Our first half may be over but we are gearing up for the second half and to remain on course toward our goal. That goal is the NCAA championship in Detroit in April. We ve got heads turned now and people attentions but we still have to go out and prove that we are a contender and just not a hot first half team fluke. MacAllister posted the team s highest average in the tournament, totaling 1,071 pins in five matches for a 214.2 average. Galganski posted a 203.0 average in five matches. ARKANSAS MID WINTER CLASSIC Cabot, Arkansas - January 14-16, 2010 The Sam Houston women s bowling team rallied for a pair of victories including a win over No. 13 ranked Valpariso in the Kats final match of the tournament to place seventh in the Arkansas State Mid-Winter Invitational at All Fam Bowling in Cabot, Ark., Sunday afternoon. The Bearkats completed the event with an 8-5 record, running their 2010-11 season mark to 36 victories and only 18 losses. Sam Houston started Sunday with a 4-2 loss to Valparaiso (157-168, 218-191, 158-159, 169-129, 215-178, 159-167). But SHSU bounced back for a 4-3 victory over Texas Southern (170-188, 179-202, 183-115, 178-170, 198-202, 201-144, 181-177) then avenged the earlier loss to Valparaiso with a 4-2 win (187-172, 200-136, 124-173, 169-169, 160-158, 181-196, 187-180). Overall, we produced the fourth best won-lost record in the tournament. The Nebraska victory was another big win for the program, Sam Houston head coach Brad Hagen said. We faced adversity and came away with some good wins. We look at it right now as a great weekend for us to keep battling and make the best of what was presented to us. Sam Houston started the tournament with a 2-3 record on Friday. The Bearkats defeated No. 15 Stephen F. Austin 904-865 and unranked Alabama State 891-796. SHSU fell to three ranked opponents by scores of 881-846 to No. 14 Alabama A&M, 1,000-902 to No. 12 Vanderbilt and 1,036-903 to Maryland- Eastern Shore. The Kats bounced back on Saturday, going 4-1. SHSU started the day with a 905-841 victory over Southern. Highlight of the day s action was a 941-904 win over No. 3 Nebraska, the only member of the NCAA Division I women s bowling Top 10 over whom Sam Houston had previously not chalked up a victory. No. 4 Central Missouri handed the Kats a 1014-946 loss, but Sam Houston bounced back for 898 pins in a win over No. 20 Louisiana Tech and a 962-809 victory over Priaire View A&M. NEBRASKA BIG RED CLASSIC Lincoln, Nebraska - January 20-22, 2011 Bouncing back from a tough opening day, the Sam Houston women s bowling team posted three big victories in the final two days of the Big Red Invitational hosted by the University of Nebraska. In Baker best four of seven play on Saturday, the Bearkats defeated No. 6 Arkansas State 4-2 and blanked No. 1 Maryland-East Shore 4-0. On Friday, the bowling team handed No. 19 Minnesota State a 949-932 loss and bested Bethune-Cookman 1,002-774. The Bearkats finished the tournament Saturday ranked sixth in the final average pin totals. Central Missouri led the event with a 203.51 average, followed by Vanderbilt 202.96, Nebraska 201.16, Maryland-Eastern Shore 198.53, Arkansas 194.48, Sam Houston 190.51, Valparaiso 186.26, Elmhurst 180.72, Bethune-Cookman 173.80 and Minnesota State 171.69. Dayna Galganski of Sam Houston finished ranked third among individual pin averages at the Big Red Invitational Kara Richard of Central Missouri led the event with a 233 mean. Danielle van der Meer was second with a 221 average and Galganski posted a 218.25 mark. To blank the No. 1 team in the country 4-0 in our final match of the tournament really closed out the trip on a high note, Sam Houston head coach Brad Hagen said. Sam Houston opened play Thursday night with three close losses, falling to host No. 3 Nebraska 770-749, Elmhurst 760-665 and No. 13 Valparaiso 749-718. Friday s play also included losses to No. 1 Maryland-Eastern Shore (981-961) and No. 4 Central Missouri (1,053-951). The Bearkats ended the weekend 4-6. Our win-loss record this weekend didsn t reflect how well we ve been playing, Sam Houston head coach Brad Hagen said. The girls have had great poise and great looks, but on Thursday we have had zero breaks or carry. Thursday we had 52 nine-pin counts for 12 baker games, which is equal to 144 frames. More than a third of our shots were nine counts. But we got some bad breaks again with zero carry. Dayna Galganski lead the way in Friday shooting 873 for four games and an average of 218.25 pins. She highlighted her day with a fourth game 253. Also adding crucial sticks at the end of the day were Aida Sanchez with a four-game average of 190.25 and Neishka Cardona coming in the last two games with an average of 202.5. It s been a demanding weekend but the girls continued to grind it out, Hagen said. They had a 97 percent on single pin spares (74 of 76) Friday. Our goal is simple Saturday - get wins, get back to even par and move on. Some tournaments you have to just roll with the punches, grind it out and make the best of it. Thus far thats exactly what we re doing. FLORIDA A&M RATTLER CLASSIC Tallahassee, Florida - February 4-6, 2001 The Sam Houston women s bowling team, playing in its inaugural season, picked up its first intercollegiate tournament championship trophy this past weekend in Florida. The Kats Dayna Galganski was named as tournament Most Valuable Player. The Bearkats defeated Prairie View A&M in the tournament finals 4-2 in best four of seven baker match play. Sam Houston led all NCAA Division I squads in the event in total pins. It was exciting to have an all-texas final Sunday, Sam Houston head coach Brad Hagen said. It was a whirlwind weekend. I m proud of the way the girls hung in and made the shots we had to make to come through with victories. The Bearkats won six of their eight matches in the first two days of action and led the event in total pins. Friday, in NCAA four-game baker play, the Bearkats lost to Jackson State 855-758, defeated Prairie View A&M 674-629, lost to Alabama State 669-643 and bounced back to defeat Florida A&M 763-685. The Kats also lost to non- NCAA participant Florida State 732-654. Saturday, in traditional team action, the Bearkats went 4-0 against the tournament s NCAA Division I opponents. Sam Houston defeated Prairie View 918-916, Jackson State 873-785, Alabama State 868-800 and Florida A&M 825-801. Florida State defeated SHSU 908-803 in a non-ncaa matchup. Aida Sanchez led the Bearkats in traditional team play with a 191.0 average. In Sunday s finals, the Bearkats knocked off Prairie View in six games, then handed Alabama State a loss in five games before earning the championship trophy with another victory over the Panthers. Sam Houston currently ranks No. 5 in the nation. The Bearkat women s bowling squad has started its first season making a big splash nationally. Sam Houston now owns a 49-26 overall record and has posted victories over both teams that have held the No. 1 spot in the national ranking - defending NCAA champion Fairleigh Dickinson (the No. 1 team in the 2011 preseason poll) and current No. 1 Maryland-Eastern Shore. HOLIDAY CLASSIC Bessemer, Alabama - February 25-27, 2011 Sam Houston women s bowling team rolled over Stephen F. Austin 4-0 to nail down a third place finish at the Holiday Classic in Bessemer, Ala. No. 5 ranked Vanderbilt won the team championship, defeating Central Michigan 4-1 in the finals. Sam Houston finished the tournament with a 9-2 record in pre-bracket action after a win over No. 20 Florida A&M Sunday morning. The Bearkats lost to Vanderbilt 4-1 in the first round of bracket Sunday. Dayna Galganski of Sam Houston was named to the Holiday Classic All- Tournament team. The junior produced a 193.0 average in the individual team competition to rank 12th among all bowlers in the event. Saturday, the Bearkats defeated South Carolina State 859-750, Alabama State 824-792, Southern 895-709 and No. 3 Nebraska 947-934 but lost to No. 5 Vanderbilt 988-893. Saturday was a roller coaster day with a great overall team effort, Sam Houston head coach Brad Hagen said. Composure and heart was the key to our success today. We made the shots we had to make when we had to make them today and that was the difference. After catching a hot Vanderbilt during our fourth match, we had to set our
focus on the next match and what we could control in front of us and not dwell on the past. We made some very clutch shots in the last match against Nebraska including a string of strikes and a clean game (221) by Neishka Cardona as well as a late game substitution where Aida Sanchez came in for Shaina Woolbaugh filling up the last four frames with 70 pins. No. 5 Nebraska upset No. 1 Fairleight Dickinson in the Sunday finals to earn the tournament title. No. 3 Central Missouri place third. Sam Houston, which started the day seeded 10th, earned the eighth place standing with a pair of 4-3 wins in Baker match play. Kutztown defeated SHSU 4-2. The Bearkats ended the tournament with a 9-6 record over the three days to complete regular season action with a 68-35 overall match record. The girls left it all out there Sunday, Sam Houston head coach Brad Hagen said. They put an exclamation mark on our resume with a solid day. We are still in good shape for consideration by the NCAA Comittee. The Bearkats won twice and lost four matches in traditional five-player team action Saturday. After a strong showing on Friday, on Saturday we had one of those days where we had some great looks, a few bad breaks and the other teams had it going for them when they needed it the most, Sam Houston head coach Brad Hagen said. I was very proud of our girls for keeping their composure. Our first and fifth matches Saturday were the toughest and we had combined losses of less than 20 pins. The Music City Classic was hosted by Vanderbilt University at the Smyrna Bowling Center in Smyrna, Tennessee. Thirteen of the top 15-ranked teams in the national rankings are competing in the Music City Classic. Less than two weeks after the tournament, the eight teams for the 2011 NCAA Division I Women s Bowling Championship will be selected. Sam Houston stands No. 9 in the March National Tenpins Coaches Association (NTCA) rankings. The latest NCAA Division I RPI (Rating Percentage Index) figures have the Bearkats back in the No. 5 position.
