John Burgi Hall of Fame 2018 Hollister High Hollister, Missouri Missouri State High Baseball 2017 Coaches of the Year Sponsored by Cooperstown Bat Class 1 Justin Simpher; Bell City Earl T. Burton; Wellsville John Burgi Hollister HS John Burgi was raised in the small town of Avilla, Mo and graduated from Carthage High. After graduation, John played baseball at Crowder College and Emporia State University, where he graduated with Honors in 1979. After graduation, Coach Burgi joined his former high school coach Gary Roark to serve as the pitching coach at Crowder. In 1982 he accepted the head coaching position at Carthage and was thrilled about the opportunity to go home. In his eight years as the head coach at Carthage, he had a record of 152-50 which included three trips to the Final Final, seven District Championships, and five Conference Championships. In 1990 Coach Burgi moved on to Hutchinson Kansas Community College to become the Head Coach of the Blue Dragons. While at Hutch, John was named the Jayhawk Coach of the Year three times and collected four Conference championships. While serving as the coach at Hutch, 37 of his players were drafted with six of those reaching the Major Leagues. He ended his career at Hutch with a record of 343-170. In 2000 John was named to the position of recruiting coordinator and pitching coach at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro, Arkansas. While there the team ERA was lowered by over 1.5 runs per game and he had the honor of coaching in most all of the stadiums in the SEC. After much deliberation, Coach Burgi decided to return to his high school coaching roots and accepted the position as the Head Baseball Coach at Valley View High in Jonesboro. While at Valley View, the Blazers made seven state tournament appearances, won six District Championships, five consecutive Regional Championships, and two State Championships. During his career at Valley View he had a record of 243-78. He also coached the the Jonesboro Ricemen to the American Legion World Series in 2008 where they finished 4th. In 2012 John left Valley View and returned to Missouri to coaching baseball at Hollister High, and also serves as the school's Athletic Director. John has been married to his wife Debbie for 35 years. He and Debbie have two children, Addison who is currently an insurance agent in Jonesboro and a son Kevin who teaches and coaches in Joplin. In addition to their children, John and Debbie are proud grandparents of three granddaughters.
