I t was well attended. I will send a report soon. I am trying to get more students to take IEEE membership as most of the current student members will be graduating. 7.4.2 CQU (Rockhampton) Student Chapter Membership development event planned for early next year. Current student member count = 3. 7.5 USQ Student Chapter From Paul Wen: 1. Seminar: Big Data Analytics with Social Media and Social Networks, Time & Location: D109, 12:00 to 1:00, 4 July, 2014 Speaker: A/Professor Xue Li, School of information technology and electrical engineering, University of Queensland 2. Seminar: Bayesian Modelling and Analysis of Big Data Time & Location: D109, 12:00 to 1:00, 8 Oct, 2014 Speaker: Prof Kerrie Mengersen, Statistics, Science and Engineering Faculty, Queensland University of Technology We were going to organise an independent IEEE USQ student branch seminar on "big data and cloud computing" early this semester. However, it was conflicted with the faculty arrangement, as the faculty is pushing for a new data science program. At the end, we joined them as a co-organiser. 5 of 8
8.0 Chapter and Affinity Groups 8.1 Aerospace & Electronic Systems No report. 8.2 Computational Intelligence No report. 8.3 Computer Society No report. Next semester, our focus will be "agricultural robots and digital farm", and we have identified a speaker from Australian National University, which is part of our Collaborative Research Network program. 8.4 Control Systems/Robotics & Automation From John: Two things I would like to raise in the RAS/CS slot. The first is two presentations by Peter Brett, one in Brisbane and the other at USQ. I should have Peter s preferred days in the first week of December by tonight. The main issue is to use vtools to put out announcements and Michael s help to set up a Brisbane venue. Second is Mechatronics and Machine Vision 2015. It needs IEEE support in the form of wide advertising. It is highly desirable that IEEE should take on some or all of the reviewing load. The easiest place to host it is once again at USQ, where Outreach and Engagement have shown willingness to help with organisation. The date would be in early December 2015, after the examinations and marking blitz, with the hope of also attracting a contingent from the winter UK. With luck the Brisbane West Wellcamp airport will be in full 6 of 8
operation by then, certainly with flights from Sydney and maybe from Asia. 8.5 Engineering in Medicine & Biology - DL visit to be held in the second week of December. - Bid to be submitted to hold EMBC World Congress in Brisbane after 2018. - SW is happy to continue as the Chair in 2015. 8.6 Microwave Theory & Techniques/Antennas & Propagation 8.7 Power & Energy/DEIS - DL held on Nov. 3. - Another event planned for 2014. - Panel discussion held on Oct. 23; 45 attendees.
