Anima ng the Lasallian call to service La Salle District of Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan & Papua New Guinea Sunday 17 April - Wednesday 20 April 2016 Proudly sponsored by La Salle College 5 La Salle Avenue Middle Swan, Western Australia

CONFERENCE WELCOME BR DAVID HAWKE FSC (Br Visitor District of ANZPPNG) The inaugural District of Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea Educators Conference will take place at La Salle College, Middle Swan (Perth) in April 2016. The idea was first flagged by Wayne Bull, Principal of La Salle College and supported wholeheartedly by the District and Mission Councils. Under the umbrella theme; God has called you to your ministry the organisers have planned a conference applicable to all across the four sectors of the District and also inclusive of invitations to Lasallians across the Pacific-Asia Region. The conference will be enhanced by the presence of Br Robert Schieler, Superior General who will deliver a keynote address. He will be accompanied by Br Ricky Laguda, General Councillor as they both commence their pastoral visit to Australia and Papua New Guinea. In addition to several presentations, workshops covering the diversity of the Lasallian educational mission will be offered. While the theme and the various presentations will focus the delegates on their particular ministry and serve to inform them on others, the fact that people gather together and by association will be a rich experience in itself. Hence the interaction with each other is a very important dimension of the conference. Therefore it is my hope that all works across the District will be represented by at least one delegate and hopefully more. The conference will be a wonderful occasion to express our solidarity with each other not only in the District but also in the PARC Region. Let us hope that the success of this first Educators Conference will be the trailblazer for future conferences elsewhere in the District. I look forward to meeting you at La Salle College in April. WELCOME TO LA SALLE COLLEGE, MIDDLE SWAN WAYNE BULL AFSC (Principal) I am delighted to welcome delegates to La Salle College, Middle Swan, to share in this historic gathering of Lasallian Educators from the ANZPPNG District and the wider Lasallian family within PARC. Our Lasallian community here in Perth has been without a direct Brothers presence for 43 years. Being situated in one of the most isolated capital cities in the world we have actively looked at ways in which our Lasallian school can continue to be nurtured in the charism and spirit of St John Baptist de La Salle. It is from this quest that the origins of this Conference has grown. I wish to record my thanks for the support and encouragement of the Brother Visitor, David Hawke and the Executive Director of Lasallian Mission Services, Merv McCormack. The organising committee here at Middle Swan has put together a programme which I believe will enrich and challenge participants. I have been delighted with the willingness of our keynote speakers and workshop presenters to assist in the development of a Conference which I hope could become a regular feature on the Lasallian education calendar. Finally, I am honoured to welcome to La Salle College, Middle Swan and to our Lasallian Educators Conference, the Superior General of the De La Salle Brothers, Br Robert Schieler. His presence will enable all delegates to listen to and engage with the Superior General in gaining insights into the future direction and works of the Institute. 2

LASALLIAN EDUCATORS CONFERENCE KEYNOTE SPEAKERS VERY REV MGR KEVIN LONG PhD BR ROBERT SCHIELER FSC (Superior General) Br Robert is originally from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania USA. He was born in a very special year, 1950; the same year the Pope stated as a Holy Year, and even more significantly, it was the year John Baptist de La Salle was proclaimed patron saint of teachers. Br Robert was first introduced to the Brothers as a student at West Catholic Boys High School (now West Catholic Preparatory High School) and in 1968 Br Robert joined the Brothers of the Christian Schools Ammendale, Maryland. He professed his final vows in 1979. Monsignor Kevin Long is Rector of St Charles Seminary in Guildford. He was previously the Rector at St Thomas More College, a Catholic residential College attached to the University of Western Australia. In 2009 he was appointed by Pope Benedict to the position of Monsignor and given the category of Chaplain to His Holiness. He accompanied the then Archbishop of Perth, Barry Hickey, to Rome as one of his two theological Periti (experts) to the Synod of Oceania. Monsignor Kevin completed his Bachelor of Theology through Melbourne College of Divinity in 1977, after studies at Catholic Theological College, Clayton. In 1988 he gained a Master of Philosophy (School of Ecumenics) from Trinity College, Dublin. He was awarded a doctorate in 1994 from the University of Western Australia. Actively involved in the work of the Br Robert has a Bachelor s degree in history from La Salle University, Philadelphia and was first assigned as a teacher at La Salle College High School from 1972 to 1975. He holds master s degrees in European history from the University of Notre Dame and in Asian studies from the University of the Philippines, as well as a doctorate in educational administration from the University of Pennsylvania. Catholic Education Commission in WA, his research interests focus on spirituality and history, and ecumenical issues confronting the Christian churches. Monsignor Kevin is also an Associate Lecturer at the University of Notre Dame, Fremantle where he lectures in Church History, Spirituality and Theological Studies for Medical students and has presented to clergy groups on Papal encyclicals and important Vatican documents. He delivers a number of units as part of Catholic Education WA s accreditation programme assisting teachers in their understanding of the Catholic faith. Br Robert served as General Councillor for the Lasallian Region of North America (RELAN) in Washington, D.C. for seven years prior to his role as Superior General. Before then, he was the Director of Education for the Brothers United States Toronto Region. In that role, he developed, coordinated, and directed national educational formation programmes for teachers and Brothers in the 104 Lasallian schools across the United States. He has also served as Executive Secretary of the Regional Education Board and the Lasallian Association of College and University Presidents. Prior to this, Br Robert was Auxiliary Visitor and Director of Education for the Baltimore District. He served in the Philippines for 11 years in a variety of administrative positions, from Assistant Principal to Superintendent of Schools. Br Robert identifies that his time spent in the Philippines from 1975 to 1991 as a beyond the border experience that placed him in excellent stead for today as leader of the Catholic Church s largest order of religious Brothers dedicated to education. Br Robert is the 27th successor of St John Baptist de La Salle. A wonderful friend of La Salle College, Middle Swan, Monsignor Kevin is a regular contributor to the school s faith formation programmes. 3

BR DAVID HAWKE FSC Br David Hawke was born in Auckland, New Zealand in 1950. The son of a New Zealand mother and an Australian dad, David, along with his brother and sister, had a typical Catholic upbringing. Br David completed the novitiate in 1969 in New South Wales. After taking his first vows in 1970, he worked at De La Salle Colleges in New Zealand, namely New Plymouth and Mangere East before moving to Australia to work at St Bede s College, Mentone in Victoria. After some 25 years as a Brother in various leadership positions, Br David Hawke was elected Visitor of the Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea District in 1996. At the conclusion of his term as Visitor, he was then appointed as General Councillor for the Asia Pacific region, which saw him as one of the advisors to the Superior General. MIRANDA CHOW In April 2014 Br David finished on the General Council and returned to Australia where the Brothers nominated him for the position of Visitor. Br Robert Schieler, Superior General, appointed Br David to the position of Visitor of Australia, New Zealand, Pakistan & Papua New Guinea in August 2014. According to Br David, There are many ways for people to get involved in our mission to educate and care for young people in need. Our mission is not one that the world can afford to go without. The more people that get involved and support our work, the more we will be able to reach out to the last, the lost and the least in our society. Miranda Chow is the CEO of the Lasallian Foundation, an international aid and development NGO based in Melbourne, Australia. She joined the organisation in 2007 as Project Manager bringing over fifteen years' experience in brand marketing/strategy and innovation in technology, business administration, retail, textile and packaging design. Miranda has worked for multinational corporations including Orange UK, IBM, Best & Less and Cadbury Schweppes. She is currently an Advisory Board member for the Deakin University International Studies programme focused on improving the curriculum and student outcomes. Spending several years backpacking through Asia, Europe, North America and Peru along with a short stint volunteering in a remote school in Guatemala sparked her interest and passion for social justice. She is extremely committed to ensuring education is accessible to all, particularly children in poor and marginalised communities. 4

BR GERARD RUMMERY FSC Br Gerard Rummery FSC has made a significant and lasting contribution to Australian and international Catholic religious education. He taught primary and secondary classes in Melbourne before being involved in teacher-education programmes with younger members of his own congregation as well as with those of the Christian, Marist and Patrician Brothers. He completed his Masters Studies at Sydney University and in Europe, before beginning doctoral studies at Lancaster University. During his studies he lived in France, Belgium and Germany, completing his doctorate on the topic The Concept of Catechesis and the Concept of Religious Education in a Pluralist Society. Br Gerard was an official delegate of his Congregation to the 1971 International Catechetical Congress in Rome. His participation at this Congress led him subsequently to found the journal Word in Life as a successor to Our Apostolate. Competent in French, Spanish, Italian and German, he was elected to serve on the General Council of his congregation for 14 years until June 2000. He is the principal author and editor of The Mission of Human and Christian Education: A Shared Mission, the official international text of the De La Salle Brothers used in their formation programmes. CONFERENCE WELCOME FROM MERV McCORMACK (Executive Director, Lasallian Mission Council) It is a pleasure to add my welcome to all delegates at this inaugural ANZPPNG Lasallian Educators Conference. It is hoped that your valued presence and active participation will add depth to our deliberations, and that you will find your own formation and professional development is enhanced through the varied interactions with Lasallians from throughout the District, and beyond. In a particular way, sincere thanks are extended to Lasallians who are presenting workshops. The generous offerings of those colleagues who have been willing to share their knowledge, insights, and experiences has been impressive. Finally, sincere thanks are extended to Wayne Bull and members of his leadership team who formed the Conference Organising Committee, along with Julie Alibrandi from the Lasallian Mission Council. The many hours of planning and scheduling which this fine group of colleagues have committed to the Conference will undoubtedly ensure its success. Wayne s generosity in hosting the Conference, and opening up La Salle College for our use, is greatly appreciated. Welcome, fellow Lasallians to LEC16! I hope you enjoy a magnificent time in the golden west! 5
