PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC The Czech Republic is situated in Central Europe. It has been historically divided into three regions: Bohemia, Moravia, and Silesia. The total area is 78,886 square metres and the country s population amounts to 1.3 million. The Czech Republic has borders with Germany, Poland, Austria, and Slovakia. The country is encircled by mountain ranges and is virtually a showcase of architectural styles, as reflected in many historic towns, castles and manor houses. Located at the heart of Europe, Prague ( Praha in Czech) has been the capital of the ancient realm of Bohemia for centuries. It has been a capital for the Holy Roman Empire, the Habsburg Court and the state of Czechoslovakia. It was only when the Iron Curtain fell in 1989 that Prague s cultural treasures miraculously preserved were unveiled once more. Prague, City of a Hundred Spires, a UNESCO monument and one of the most beautiful cities in the world. CHARLES UNIVERSITY Univerzita Karlova Charles University was founded in 1348, making it one of the oldest universities in the world. Yet it is also renowned as a modern, dynamic, cosmopolitan and prestigious institution of higher education. It is the largest and most renowned Czech university, and is also the best-rated Czech university according to international rankings. There are currently 17 faculties at the University (14 in Prague, 2 in Hradec Králové and 1 in Plzeň), plus 3 institutes, 6 other centres of teaching, research, development and other creative activities, a centre providing information services, 5 facilities serving the whole University, and the Rectorate - which is the executive management body for the whole University. The University is the best-performing research institution in the Czech Republic; this is reflected in the analyses of research output carried out by the Czech Research, Development and Innovation Council. ACCOMODATION & LIVING Living Costs The cost of living in the Czech Republic is on average comparable to that of other Central and East European countries. A single student is advised to have available approximately CZK 8 500 (cca 350) per month to cover food, basic transport and accommodation. It is always available starting approx. one week before the beginning of the semester/ study period. Charles University has several halls of residence. Usually, rooms are shared by two or more people as single rooms are usually booked very quickly. Bathrooms and kitchenettes are shared between multiple rooms. Some halls have a unit system where one unit consists of two twin rooms sharing bathroom facilities. The metro (subway) is the quickest way to travel long distances across the city. It has three lines: A (green), B (yellow) and C (red). Trams and buses connect the metro system to outlying areas, and are also a handy way to make short journeys in the city centre.
