BIOGRAPHICAL/HISTORICAL NOTE Joseph S. Tate was born in Pennsylvania in 1894. A 1917 graduate of West Point, Tate was a field artillery officer who served in both World Wars. In 1950 he was appointed commanding officer of the Louisiana military district. Tate died in New Orleans, December 10, 1963. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The photograph album (unbound) contains 103 black and white prints mounted on paper. The images show scenes from several locations in Louisiana during the 1920s. It is not known whether Joseph S. Tate was the photographer. It is known that the album was his property. Places appearing in the photographs include Baton Rouge, New Orleans, St. Martinville, Morgan City, Avery Island, and Franklin. The New Orleans images show scenes of Mardi Gras, The Vieux Carré, buildings, and architectural details. There are also photos of Bayous scenes, particularly Bayou Teche. Children and wildlife appear in some of the photos. There is a group of logging industry images showing workers, roads, and equipment. Another group of photos was taken along Louisiana coastal areas and depicts oyster and shrimp fishermen, their boats, nets, camps, activities, and families. Page 4 of 13
