APPLICANT MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS Prior to being considered for employment by the Potter County Sheriff s Office, an applicant must meet the following requirements: Must be 18 years of age. U.S. citizen and a resident of the contiguous United States for a period of time sufficient to conduct a comprehensive background investigation. Consideration given for overseas military assignments. Must have a High School Diploma or G.E.D. Pass all phases of the applicant testing process. Valid Texas driver license and proof of liability insurance. No more than (3) three moving traffic violations within a twelve (12) month period preceding the date of application. No prior felony or class A misdemeanor conviction, including court-ordered community supervision, probation, or deferred adjudication. No class B misdemeanor conviction, including court-ordered community supervision, probation, or deferred adjudication, within the past ten (10) years preceding the date of application. No prior conviction from any court of an offense involving family violence. (Offenses committed while in the military or in other jurisdictions will be reviewed as if they occurred in the State of Texas) Previous military personnel must not have ever received a dishonorable or other discharge based on misconduct which bars future military service. Must not have been convicted of any court-martial higher than a summary. Applicants with previous military service must submit a DD214. Stable credit history. Must provide copy of Texas driver license, social security card, proof of automobile insurance, high school diploma or GED, certified copy of birth certificate (or proof of US citizenship), and DD214 (if applicable). Pass a medical evaluation to include psychological testing. Pass a pre-employment drug test, and be drug free as part of condition of employment. CORRECTIONS OFFICER APPLICANTS The physical agility test listed below must be successfully completed to qualify for the position of Corrections Officer for the Potter County Sheriff s Office. 1. A thorough background investigation is required to properly evaluate the suitability of applicants for employment with the agency. Although it is an achievement to reach the background phase of the hiring process, this is still a competitive process and does not, in any way, guarantee selection. These instructions are provided as a guide to assist you in properly completing your Personal History Statement. During the last ten (10) years, I have not been convicted of, plead guilty (nolo contendere/no contest) to, been on court-ordered community supervision/probation, or received deferred adjudication for a Class B misdemeanor in this state, another state, or while serving in the military. (Offenses committed while in the military or in other jurisdictions will be reviewed as if they occurred in the State of Texas.) I have never had a military court martial that resulted in a dishonorable or bad conduct discharge which bars future military service. DISQUALIFICATION There are very few automatic basis for rejection. Even issues of prior misconduct, employee terminations, and arrests are usually not, in and of themselves, automatically disqualifying. However, deliberate misstatements or omissions can and often will result in your application being rejected, regardless of the nature or reason for the misstatements/omissions. In fact, the number one reason individuals fail background investigations is because they deliberately withhold or misrepresent job-relevant information from their prospective employer. This personal history statement is a governmental document. Be truthful, as there are criminal consequences for lying on a governmental document. 8
