There were about 50-60 Optometrist professionals from the tricity gathered to spread the awareness of vision and sight care amongst the public. World Sight Day is an annual day of awareness to focus global attention on blindness, visual impairment and rehabilitation of the visually impaired held on the second Thursday in October, every year. World Sight Day is observed around the world by all Eye Care Professionals involved in preventing visual impairment or restoring sight. As per WHO in India there are 133 million people who are visually impaired or blind due to non availability of glasses. And this figure is globally around 670 million. It is really a irony that so many people are simply devoid of a pair of glasses. In this occasion the President OAC, Optom. Anil Kumar Kalia said that Right to Sight is universal and requested the Optical profession and industry to raise funds to help the needy visually impaired people. General Secretary of the Association, Optom. Kamal Pant stressed to the public to visit their nearest optometrist for regular eye sight check ups once in 6 months to reduce the impairment due to uncorrected refractive errors. In the outpatient department of the Hospital, a camp was with a focus for screening for glaucoma was organized. All patients who were under the risk category for glaucoma were screened and 60 patients were evaluated on October 13, 2011. Uncorrected refractive errors is the second leading cause for avoidable blindness and Optometrists are a first line of defence for this. A camp for the underprivileged population of Motilal Nagar, Bandra was organized. The population of this community have been rehabilitated from the banks of the Mithi river, following the floods of July 26, 2005 in Mumbai. This activity was a part of the large refractive error project called Mumbai Eye Care Campaign, an initiative of Sightsavers and Standard Chartered Bank. Vision Screening, Mumbai WSD Team of Lotus, Mumbai Camp Activity The camp for the community was organized at the basement of one of the newly constructed buildings that is yet to be occupied. Students of Lotus College, supported by a team of community workers of Mumbai Eye Care Campaign, faculty and volunteers from Dhirubhai Ambani International Schools formed an efficient team to evaluate patients. Different stations were set up at the campsite, to perform various diagnostic tests like, anterior segment
evaluation, fundus photography, IOP check, direct ophthalmoscopy, refraction and finally dispensing of spectacles. At the end of the day, 354 patients were examined. Of these, 80 patients were diagnosed with just presbyopia and reading glasses were dispensed on the spot. 64 of them required custom made glasses, hence measurements were taken and the spectacles have been ordered.
