Seventh Annual Anesthesia Update New Approaches to Familiar Topics Friday through Sunday, March 11-13, 2016 Nemacolin Woodlands Conference Center Farmington, Pennsylvania Sponsored by Department of Anesthesiology Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Conference Overview To provide optimal patient care, the anesthesia provider must maintain up-to-date knowledge involving health care delivery. This program is designed to review and update the knowledge and skills of anesthesia providers as it relates to current professional practice. The three- day format will allow optimal time for education while providing time to enjoy the Nemacolin experience. Intended Audience This program is designed for anesthesiologists, residents, certified registered nurse anesthetists and student registered nurse anesthetists, as well as nurses and allied health care providers. Conference Objectives At the conclusion, participants should be able to: n Define current & future approaches for peripheral & regional anesthesia in lower extremity surgery and abdominal surgery. n List the pro and cons of neuraxial vs general anesthesia in lower extremity orthopedic surgery; describe anesthesia management of post-op pain and surgical complications. n Describe the role of the anesthesia provider in acute and non-acute burn patients, and examine the benefits of colloid vs crytalloid fluids in acute resuscitation. n Explain ultrasound physics and recognize uses for cardiac and non-cardiac evaluations in the peri-operative period. n Analyze patient history and the series of events leading up cardiovascular collapse; identify risk factors and causative agents leading to the collapse. n Describe advances in treatment protocols for post partum hemorrhage. n List indications and goals for advanced hip arthroscopy, defining unique requirements and identifying common intraoperative complications. n Define damage control resuscitation and describe the pathophysiology and treatment of acute coagulopathy of trauma. n Explain the anesthetic management for TAVR considering robotic mitral valve surgery vs conventional open surgery and how 3D TEE is revolutionizing mitral valve surgery. n Describe the anatomy and physiology of the airway and compare common difficult airway techniques by demonstrating cricothyrotomy using a pig airway. n Explain the benefits of: peripheral nerve block; spinal; and epidurals: and how the ultrasound can help by demonstrating techniques in the workshop. n Compare the pharmacologic properties of muscle relaxants currently available and analyze the future drugs and reversals that will be available. n Identify anatomy for epidural placement, compare epidural dosing protocols, describe what drugs are most effective for each stage of labor. n Describe the most commonly used anesthesia drugs and identify the receptors on a cellular level that are effected by induction agents and by narcotics. n Identify examples of technology, policies and common practice settings that lead to medication errors and determine interventions to reduce errors.
