They started to review current notes and further defined eligibility criteria, prize suggestions and evaluation criteria. Want to make articles quoted be pertinent and have resources that can be tapped into to help evaluate/level articles etc. Jeannie will check with Donna Weyant, Diane Ankney, Pat Giampa and possibly Diane Hupp for their input and guidance Project Presentation Jodi Licata presented the Quality and Research project Family Presence during Resuscitation in the PICU. Coinvestigators include Tracy Pasek, Alicia Vereb and Nicole May. Also suggested that MAJOR practice changes should be presented to EBP before going to the clearinghouse Jodi discussed the AACN practice alert, AHA recommendation and lit search all supporting offering families the option to be present during resuscitation efforts. during resuscitation. Review and discussion of articles continued: Group I ( led by Sheila) Comparing methods of determining insertion length for placing gastric tubes in children one month to seventeen years of age by, Ellett, Cohen, Perkins, Croffie, Lane and Austin. Members to review articles to completion to be active participant in October meeting when the plan is to join groups to create synthesis table Predicting the insertion length for gastric tube placement in neonates by Cirgin- Ellett, Cohen, Perkins, Smith, Lane and Austin Group II (led by Debbie) A weight- based formula for the estimation of gastric tube insertion length in newborns by Freeman, Saxton and Holberton New Knowledge Rounds EBP wheel further updated with padding on spinner to decrease noise level when wheel spun Predicting internal distance to the stomach for positioning naso-gastric and orogastric feeding tubes in children by Beckstrand, Cirgin-Ellett, and McDaniel. April 2014 PICU Edition Editor, Tracy Pasek, RN The Program By Jodi Licata & Tracy Pasek A member of what would become our PAGER team was assisting with CPR. Evaluation of the experience was poor the family could have been reunited with their child much sooner than what occurred. Coincidently, an AACN Practice Alert became available emphasizing the importance of family presence during resuscitation. Hence, the PAGER Program was born. P-A-G-E-R is an acronym for Parent Advocacy Group for Events around Resuscitation. The PAGER program is supported by our PICU leadership team. Prior to implementation, the program was presented to Critical Care Medicine at a PQRS meeting during which our physicians had an opportunity for input & questions. PAGER is an interdisciplinary collaborative nursing social work medicine. The scope and impact of the AACN Practice Alert (2010) is Evidence is mounting that family presence during resuscitation is beneficial to patients and families Karla Persia Becca Lavezoli Kylie Freshwater Cheri Cigna Alicia Duss Nicole May Abby Mysels Jodi Licata Tracy Pasek First, PAGER nurses attended an 8 hr. crisis intervention course sponsored by CHP s security officers. The course included staying safe during crises and interactive self-defense training. Second, they attended a 2 hr. session facilitated by Gwen Harcar, our Social Worker. This second curriculum was collaboratively developed by Gwen, Jodi, and Tracy and included didactic content (eg, stages of crisis, family response to crisis) and role play experiences. The role play entailed assessing parent readiness to reunite with their child who is experiencing a resuscitative event and therapeutic communication techniques. Evaluations for the latter course yielded positive comments from attendees. You will recognize our PAGER nurses as they are wearing this pin, graciously supported by Alyssa and Carrie. Family presence at the bedside of a child who is being resuscitated will NOT be imposed on families. It will be offered and supported, if the family wants to be with their child. PAGER nurses will function as a support to Social Work or function independently when Social Work is unavailable and time is of the essence. The PAGER nurses will stay apprised of new/current evidence as it relates to parental presence during pediatric resuscitation. PAGER nurses will evaluate how their role is developing (eg, positive experiences, barriers). Our Clinical Leaders will serve as important links in collaborating with and supporting PAGER nurses as resources. Lastly, the PAGER Program dovetails perfectly with our newly energized PICU Patient and Family-Centered Care effort! The End
