Page 3 Bugle Newsletter June 2017 Commander s Message Greetings Comrades and Auxiliary, Ok folks, here we go charging ahead into another year. I m honored to have been elected as your Post Commander for another year and I look forward to the future success we ll have as a team. Thank you to all that attended the Mass Installation. Although I was not physically present, I was properly installed via Facetime. I even think this was the first time that this App / Technology has been used to install a Post Commander! Thanks to Comrade Dan Bauer for arranging that evolution. Obviously, this past year has had its share of ups and downs, but in the end, I believe we came together as one team with a common goal. My goal for the coming year is to challenge myself more and to work harder for the benefit of our Post, its members, and our extended Veteran community. A change of Post 2111 culture has taken place over the last year and I want to continue our trend of caring for each other, respecting our differences, promoting a family environment, growing our membership and remaining financially solid. You the membership have shown time and time again, what we can accomplish if we work with each other and not against each other. Believe it or not, we are nearing the end of our building repairs and will soon be back in business, if not already by the time you read this newsletter. Thank you to everyone who took the time to donate your time or money for this effort. We re still not finished and although we are able to cover the immediate costs of our repairs, we need to continue our fundraising efforts to repay costs associated with our repairs. Our Ways and Means Committee Chairman, Dan Bauer has created letters to be mailed to the entire membership and created an application on our Post 2111 homepage where people can contribute electronically. Again, a heartfelt thank you to everyone. We are also in the planning stages of a fundraising event on the 24 th of June. More to follow but we are preparing for music, media coverage (News and Radio), Food and a party atmosphere. Again, more to follow on this event. Thank you all so much for your votes of confidence and support throughout the year. Remember to keep our Veterans and their families in your thoughts, and most of all remember that we are a family. Let s take care of each other! In continued Comradeship and Very Respectfully, Auxiliary President s Message Hello Sisters, Brothers, Comrades and Friends I would like to wish all the Dads a Happy Father s Day. I am wishing you all a great day. The Auxiliary will be cooking up a free breakfast to all 2111 post member dads and auxiliary dads in good standing. That will be June 18 th from 9:00 am until noon. That s our way of thanking you for your time and support that you have given to Post 2111 CDR. Jack E. Carleton. I am getting ready for the 90 th Annual State Convention being held in Ontario. I am excited and ready to bring back to our auxiliary all the new and up dated information for our Veteran s programs. I will be busy with classes, meetings, and I am honored to be a Page for our State Jr. Vice President Ellie Mello. I am sure all will go well and Ellie will come home as our State Sr. Vice President 2017-2018. As a reminder because of the convention being held during the time the auxiliary has their meeting, there will be NO auxiliary meeting in June. Many of your officers will be attending the convention. The next meeting will not be held until July 13 th, at 2111 in the Bobby Price Hall at 6:30. There will be no membership meeting in June. The next membership meeting will be July 25 th at the Mission Valley Post 3787 at 6:00 pm. I attended the Mount Miguel High School Army JROTC annual awards ceremony. As usual these young men and women did an outstanding job with their drill team performances. Every year the auxiliary donates money to Mt. Miguel JROTC and we present the best drill platoon with a trophy and ribbon. I would like to thank the Kearny Mesa Auxiliary for hosting the last membership meeting of the VFW year. The Lakeside post also did a wonderful job in putting together the Mass Installation Ceremonies. The auxiliary district meeting was rather long, but in the end we were all invited to a reception for the incoming district president and commander. A fantastic hot BBQ meal was waiting for us at the Encanto Post. Many events going on in the month of June. The pig roast in Ramona, June 3. Many of you remember Barbara Quinn, celebration of life for her will be held at the Lemon Grove Post Michael Monsoor June 4 th at 2 pm. Flag Day at Fredericka Manor June 14 th at 10:00 am. Passing of the Gavel June 24 th at 11 am. Please take a look at the calendar for more information and event dates. Brett Taylor Commander, VFW Post 2111 Let freedom Ring Sing and Swing. Remembering the Sacrifices our Veterans Made to our Country. Be kind to one another. Loyally Yours, Lupe Duggins

Page 4 Bugle Newsletter June 2017 June 2017 Membership Report Post 2111 Members, Families and Friends, Please give a warm welcome to our 8 New Members, who joined us in May 2017! Howard Dixon; Navy, Iraq, Annual Richard Galvan; Army, Vietnam, LIFE Domingo Marbello; Navy, Gulf, Annual Bernabe Racela; Navy, Vietnam, Annual Richard Rodriguez; Navy, Vietnam, LIFE Bradford Shattuck; Navy, Iraq, Annual Carlos Wilkerson; Navy, GWOT, Annual Herminio Zunga; Navy, Vietnam, Annual Be a Ready Recruiter for the Post, by encouraging any fellow overseas-veterans, to join us. (Please help remind Annual Members to renew their membership this year.) Post 2111 appreciates the millions of veterans who have served and supported one another over the last three decades long struggle in the Mideast - who are entitled to the comradeship of WW II, Korea and Vietnam veterans, through our common cause, as established by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, on September 29, 1899. Keep a few VFW applications handy - to give out to inquiring veterans. We have Membership Envelopes, behind the bar, to assist sign-ups. See the Steps to Membership poster for: How to join? Take credit for helping new members by printing Your Name, on the application. Earn a VFW Pin, for signing up 5 members. Many Thanks for your past loyal military service. And to all those now proudly serving! Hank Schanstra - Membership Chairman - Call for any questions. (916) 221-2709 Request Your Military Service Records Online, by Mail, or by Fax, (Includes DD 214/Separation Documents, Personnel Records, Replacement Medals, and/or Medical Records) has never been easier. This may be particularly helpful when a veteran needs a copy of the DD-214 for employment purposes. NPRC is working to make it easier for veterans with computers and Internet access to obtain copies of documents from their military files. Military veterans and the next of kin of deceased former military members may now use a new online military personnel records system to request documents. The National Personnel Records Center (NPRC) has provided the following website for veterans to sign access to their dd-214 online: http://vetrecs.archives.gov House Committee Report Dear Comrades, Sisters, Brothers and Friends, As we launch into a new VFW Year, it s already been event filled and a fast and furious couple of months. We are happy to say that the upstairs hall is back to full service. The new roof, rafters, drop ceiling and lighting are done and look amazing. A special thanks to Carlos Fernandez and his fellow city inspector Steve for working with us to keep the place open and running downstairs. Thanks to DooRite Construction and Doyle Mills for making the work happen. We also want to thank everyone who helped with the cleanup after the work was completed. If I tried to name everyone, I would probably forget someone, and I don t want that to happen. Just know that EVERYONE did a wonderful job over 2 days to get the hall cleaned and restocked. We had Officers, Members of the Post and Auxiliary and even non-member volunteers who pitched in.thank YOU TO ALL! Now that the work is done, we need to move onto a plan to pay for those repairs. Thank you to all who have already generously donated to the Building Fund, but we still have work to do. We have scheduled a Fundraiser for June 24 th, from12 til 5pm, in the parking lot. A donation of $10 per adult and $5 per child is requested. We will have food, sodas and draft beef, raffles and 50/50 s. We will also have music and other events and booths for your entertainment. Please stop by and show your support and have a fun day. Father s Day is this month, and we will have Sunday Breakfast, free to Post 2111 Fathers. Please come and enjoy. A special thanks to Dennis and Debi who are working hard daily in the kitchen. We will be adding some new items to the menu and enhancing it for all to enjoy. Please stop by and check out our new items. Yours in Comradeship, Ed Hamilton, Chairman

We need everyone s help raising money in order to continue the good works of our Post. We have two events coming up where you can participate: 1. Post Sustainability Campaign. (www.vfwpost2111.org/ Donate.htm). Please see flyer in the Bugle for more details. Our goal is to raise $80,000! We will be mailing out more information to the members this month. Father's Day was started in 1910 by Mrs. John Dodd of Spokane, Washington. The custom spread throughout the United States and in 1936 a national Father's Day committee was formed. Headquartered in New York City, the committee annually selects a Father of the Year. Some of the fathers who have won this title are Douglas MacArthur, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Harry S. Truman. If you are interested in volunteering, the next Ways and Means meetings will be held at the Post on Saturday, June 10 & July 8 at 9:30am (after the House Committee meeting).
