OPENING SESSION AND AWARDS BRUNCH Thursday, March 21 9:30 a.m. 12:15 p.m. Drew Pearson Born in South River, N.J., Drew Pe a rs o n began his football career at South River High School where he succeeded Joe Theismann as quarterback. He continued his career at the University of Tulsa and was converted to a flanker where he caught 33 passes for a run-oriented team. He received the university s President s Award as the team s best spirited and most unselfish member. He graduated from Tulsa in 1972. In 1973, Pearson rose from a free agent to earn for the Dallas Cowboys career records of 489 receptions and 7,822 receiving yards. A three time NFL All-Pro and Pro Bowl selection, Pearson was recognized for his achievements by being named to the 1970 s NFL Hall of Fame s All-Decade Team. Pearson led the National Football Conference in pass receptions in 1976 with 58. A team leader, he served as offensive captain in 1977, 1978, 1982 and 1983. He was on the Dallas Cowboys Super Bowl X, XII and XIII teams. In 1980, the Cowboys selected Pearson as their nominee for NFL Man of the Year. Pearson is known around the NFL as Mr. Clutch because of his numerous clutch catches in game winning situations. Since his retirement in 1983, Pearson has done work as a radio and TV sports broadcaster including color commentating for CBS television s broadcasts on the NFL, providing expert analysis for Home Box Office and hosting the KLUV Dallas Cowboys post game show. As a humanitarian, Pearson sponsors the Annual Drew Pearson All Star Banquet in memory of his late father, Samuel Pearson and his late brother, Carey Pearson. This banquet, held annually since 1980, contributes to the educational growth of a number of scholars along the eastern seaboard. Pearson is also actively involved and serves as a board member for several organizations including Therapeutic Riding of Texas and the American Police Academy, and he serves as chairman of The Samuel Pearson and Carey Pearson Memorial Scholarship Fund. After retiring from football, Pearson stated, One of my main goals is to create and build a business that would be more successful than my football career. In 1985 Pearson founded the Drew Pearson Companies, a manufacturer of licensed headwear for the NFL, Major League Baseball, NBA, NASCAR, the NCAA and the Walt Disney Company, among others. After selling his company, Pearson started focusing on consulting and speaking for corporations and community groups. Meet Drew following the Awards Brunch! THURSDAY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT March 21, 7:45 a.m. 9:15 a.m. Constructability of Stucco Using Continuous Insulation Donald E. Smith, CCS, Association of the Wall and Ceiling Industry There have always been questions about constructability of claddings when using continuous insulation as required by the 2012 International Energy Conservation Code. This session will present the results of a stucco test panel built using continuous insulation thicknesses required for Climate Zone 7. Donald E. Smith, CCS, is AWCI s director of technical services. He has more than 40 years of experience in the construction industry and has worked for and with major architectural firms and contractors. From Concept to Reality: Using Technology & Pre-Fab to Bring Ideas to Life Keith Giddens and Michael Vickery, BakerTriangle Many wall and ceiling contractors struggle to see the benefit of implementing technology into their business. In this session, we ll take a look at how BakerTriangle leveraged technology to bring the concepts of Morphosis Architects to reality on the Perot Museum of Nature & Science project. Keith Giddens joined BakerTriangle in 1995 as a field employee and has worked in their estimating and project management departments before filling the role of director of virtual design and construction at their corporate office located in Dallas. He has worked on many projects that incorporated complex geometry including the Perot Museum of Nature & Science in Dallas and the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts in San Antonio. Michael Vickery is senior vice president of BakerTriangle, a Texas based drywall, acoustical and plaster specialty contractor. In the past several years Vickery has focused on how to better differentiate BakerTriangle from other specialty contractors, and the use of technology for prefabrication has been one way to create such differentiators. 6 AWCI s Convention & Intex Expo

FRIDAY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT March 22, 8 a.m. 9:30 a.m. Stay Ahead of the Curve with BIM Charles (Chuck) Mears, FAIA, RadiusTrack Corporation Joaquin Riera, Lotspeich Company, Inc. Today buildings of every category now incorporate innovative, abstract curved forms and shapes in their design. Including elegant compoundcurved surfaces for a project is both beneficial and pleasing to clients, but these shapes also create unique structural, fabrication and installation challenges. A collaborative BIM approach between the design and construction professionals optimizes project results, increases value to the owner, reduces waste and maximizes efficiency through all phases of design, fabrication and construction. Miami s newest jewel, the New World Symphony by Gehry Partners, will be used as a case study to show the benefits of using BIM. Chuck Mears, FAIA, began studying the intricacies of curves years ago as the owner of a retail construction company for the 16 years prior to his founding of Radius Track. Joaquin Riera is vice president and senior project manager at Lotspeich Company, Inc., a specialty contractor in Miami. In 17 years at Lotspeich he has estimated and managed the work for many commercial and institutional buildings. 8 AWCI s Convention & Intex Expo

FRIDAY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT March 22, 8 a.m. 9:30 a.m. Best Practices in Production Cost Controls Cecilia Padilla, On Center Software Profit margins don t end when the bid is won. It is during the project build where cost controls and profit margins are managed. The best practices of project management set a project on a course of success. Cecilia Padilla is an internationally known expert in the industry and brings more than 25 years of experience in estimating and project management for commercial drywall and plastering projects. Prior to joining On Center Software as vice president in 2008, she assisted the company with beta testing for 14 years. She previously served as a senior project manager for Marek Brothers Systems in Houston and for Raymond Interior Systems both in Las Vegas and Orange, Calif. March 18-22, 2013 San Antonio, Texas 9

FRIDAY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT March 22, 8 a.m. 9:30 a.m. The Paperless Foreman Craig Daley, Daley s Drywall & Taping Timothy J. Wies, T.J. Wies Contracting, Inc. Field reports, extra work tags and other important documents your foremen produce often take several days even a week to get to the right people. Learn how two AWCI members have used technology to allow their foremen to be paperless in things they do on a daily basis and immediately get processed and distributed. Some of the processes to be covered include field reports, extra work orders, RFIs, material orders, job production tracking, time cards, scaffold releases and more. Craig Daley is president of Daley s Drywall & Taping, Inc. in Campbell, Calif., one of Northern California s largest drywall, plaster and acoustical ceiling contractors. Daley knows our business having worked as a taper, foreman, estimator, project manager and officer. One of his strengths is implementing technologies into practical tools that contractors can use every day. Tim Wies, immediate past-president of the Association of the Wall and Ceiling Industry, is president of TJ Wies Contracting, Inc., a commercial wall and ceiling contractor located in Lake St. Louis, Mo. Wies has a degree in administrative management from the University of Missouri and has more than 35 years experience in the wall and ceiling industry moving from journeyman carpenter to foreman, to estimator and project manager, to owner and president. 10 AWCI s Convention & Intex Expo

OPTIONAL SEMINARS Invest in your education! Once again, AWCI is offering attendees an opportunity to increase their knowledge by attending a Doing It Right seminar on March 22. These seminars (gypsum, building envelope and stucco) were developed for owners and upper and middle management project managers, foremen and estimators. Each seminar provides seven hours of education and will be held from 7:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, March 22, with a break from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. so participants can walk the trade show floor and have lunch. Your registration for a Doing It Right seminar includes a box lunch and a complimentary trade show pass to the Intex Expo March 21 and 22, 2013. Register by Feb. 15, 2013, to receive the early bird discount of $195 for AWCI members and $245 for non-members. Registration fees after Feb. 15, 2013, are $245 for AWCI members and $295 for non-members. Exterior Envelope Doing It Right The 2012 International Energy Conservation Code promises to offer challenges to anyone in the construction industry who designs and installs exterior wall assemblies. The code has new stringent requirements for thermal resistance as well as new thresholds of performance for water and air tightness. Today s architects need to know how to design to meet the IECC requirements. They must also provide solutions when details aren t always available and the requirements are constantly changing. This forces contractors to struggle with constructing exterior assemblies with cladding over multiple inches of continuous insulation and highly complex air and water barriers. This course is aimed at contractors and architects who want to expand their knowledge about the IECC s exterior thermal envelope requirement for exterior wall assemblies when combined with ASTM and ASHRAE construction standards. About the Speaker Robert Grupe spent more than 38 years with United States Gypsum Company where he held various technical and management positions.
