Compassionate Carers / Compassionate Employer Project Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust
Background Negative press about nurses and nursing care especially around care of the elderly Compounded recently with articles about the Liverpool Care Pathway and poor end of life care Locally, complaints about perceived poor care, attitudes and behaviours from staff. CQUIN requirement
Aim To clearly demonstrate care and compassion in all our nursing duties To ensure nursing staff provide compassionate care to patients and their carers To value and support the care relatives and carers can provide within an acute hospital setting To develop HEFT as a compassionate employer which values and cares for all its staff HEFT as a Trust in which high quality compassionate care is consistently delivered
Project 1 - Work Stream Compassionate Carers To explore and enhance the way nurses care and are seen to care for all our patients and their carers. To bring care and compassion to the forefront of all that we do for our patients and their relatives. Little things can make a big difference
Plan 6 wards (2 per hospital) and community team as pilots to create supportive care champions and compassionate care champions with support from end of life care and bereavement site leads and palliative care nurses Work with Dying Matters national team on the Dementia care project Bespoke training delivered by Dying Matters and HEFT Faculty of Education focussing on behavioural and attitudinal change and measurable outcomes Pre and post training questionnaire to identify issues and areas of change Award on completion
Project 2 - Work Stream Supporting Carers Work in collaboration with the national Transform Project Involving carers with care provided for patients in hospital (need right focus) Exploring new ways of providing care in an acute hospital setting
Plan Steering group with representatives from carers, hospital staff and Dying Matters team Meeting with bereaved carers to hear their experiences from all three hospitals and community Meeting with nurses to discuss their thoughts on involving carers more (e.g. Benefits, barriers, perceptions, challenging custom and practice e.g. visiting times, feeding, washing, last offices etc) Agreement of changes and implementation plan Include information gained in training and education
Project 3 - Work Stream Compassionate Employers caring for the carers To look at how HEFT as an organisation cares for its employers Survey to see how many staff are also carers Look at sickness / absence levels and reasons (hidden costs of caring) Look at existing policies (e.g. Carer leave, bereavement leave and shift patterns) Look at what may make a difference and enable staff at HEFT to be supported in a caring and compassionate way
Anticipated outcomes Staff clearly demonstrating and delivering compassionate care to all patients and their carers 6000 nurses to become members of Dying Matters coalition and provide high quality compassionate care for all DVD on end of life, death and bereavement care for community advocates Local and national recognition of the high quality compassionate care provided by nurses at HEFT. HEFT as a leading compassionate employer and a supportive and caring place to work.
