WINTER 2018 Inside York Office Relocation Celebrate Life 5k Comfort Touch for Hands Workshop Women s Giving Circle Valentine Tea Volunteer Stories Service of Remembrance Upcoming Events New Volunteers Save the Date FOR AND ABOUT HOSPICE VOLUNTEERS Meaningful Difference VOICE Every year we recognize your work as volunteers at the Volunteer Recognition Dinner in April. This is a wonderful way to show our gratitude as an organization, but I d like to further explain the important difference you are making to the patients, families and Hospice & Community Care. Your time spent sitting with patients in their homes, in our Inpatient Center, delivering mail, watering plants, visiting Veteran patients and so much more has a significant impact. Last year your service would have cost Hospice $600,000; this is money we are able to put toward our patients and families. Without your dedication we would be faced with the difficult decision of cutting services or staff, but all of you allow us to meet our mission of providing the best end-of-life care to the community. You ve contributed over 30,000 hours last year alone. I consider Hospice & Community Care the luckiest organization in the area because we have the most giving and dedicated volunteers of any You ve contributed over 30,000 hours last year alone. nonprofit organization. You leave an impression not just on the patients and families but the staff you work alongside. I am greeted by a foyer volunteer at Good Drive each day I enter the office, hear uplifting stories from families talking about the volunteer who spent time with their loved one, read thank you letters from donors who give to Hospice because of the kind volunteers at the Inpatient Center and receive emails from team leaders letting me know of the exceptional volunteers assigned to their patients. You make a meaningful difference, and we are so thankful. Steve Knaub President & CEO

York Office Relocation We opened our office at 224 St. Charles Way, York in 2012, giving many of you a place to go for team meetings, to make phone calls, help office staff and as the general base for our York Home Hospice teams. We ve been busting at the seams for quite a while and were on the lookout for a new space that would accommodate the growing number of staff as well as our Pathways groups. Thanks to a generous gift from Ann Barshinger we are officially relocating to 235 St. Charles Way! Across the street, but double in size from the original office this space will be named The Ann B. Barshinger Hospice Center and will allow Home Hospice teams serving York patients to expand, and grief and bereavement services to take place here. thanks to a generous gift from Ann Barshinger we are officially relocating to 235 St. Charles Way! Comfort Touch for Hands Training Be part of the Comfort Touch for Hands Training! Started in April, 2016 by Hospice staff member Ellen Liberto this training has been utilized by countless volunteers and staff. Volunteers have been utilizing this great form of therapeutic touch to enhance the comfort of our patients at home, in nursing homes or retirement communities and the Inpatient Center. Another training is planned for April, 2018 which will include the important aspects of touch, the principles and techniques of a Comfort Touch for Hands and practice time with Ellen. Participants will spend time giving and receiving a Comfort Touch for Hands session, allowing them time to develop their confidence and skills at providing a Comfort Touch session. If you are interested in joining the session in April contact Becky Santos, rsantos@ hospicecommunity.org (717) 735-9463. Women s Giving Circle Valentine Tea You re invited to the annual Valentine Tea hosted by Hospice & Community Care s Women s Giving Circle. Volunteer Stories All of our volunteers have incredible stories about how they became involved with Hospice & Community Care, time spent with an individual patient, or a special time with a family member. These stories inspire us to continue our journey with Hospice and motivate others to volunteer. This is a story from Hospice & Community Care volunteer Mary Yohe. Mary started volunteering in 2006, and after completing her training, began visiting residents at Brethren Village Retirement Community. She s been a nursing home volunteer ever since, and has stayed at Brethren Village, creating relationships with the staff and countless Hospice patients and families throughout the years. Mary notes that every visit is different, and each patient is unique with some patients being responsive and some needing that special topic to get them to break out of their shells. One particular man at Brethren Village sticks in her mind I went to visit this man as I had every other patient. He was non-responsive, but he could tell I was there. He just knew of my presence and watched me from under the bill of the baseball hat he always wore. Some days I would take him for a stroll in his wheelchair or just sit and try to get him to open up to me, and one visit it happened. He recited a poem about a clock and the importance of time. I asked him to recite it to me over and over again many times during my next several visits, writing it down so I could remember it. I eventually had it memorized, and when I wanted to engage him all I had to say was, Tell me about your clock. He would launch into the poem and we would take turns reciting the verses. Mary still remembers the poem, even though the patient is gone. It is a lovely memory and showcases the way each person can relate to another. We d love to hear your story!
