FR. DAN S COMMENTS Love In Recovery One of the many blessings in my life is a 71-yr. old Dutch friend named Willem. He sees life thorough an artist s eyes. The cartoon character beginning this column is named The SCL. That stands for Shaman Chino Lama, a fictitious product of Will s imagination. The shaman is a street-philosopher-flower-child who makes his living selling WD 40, hence the badge pinned to his suspenders. Will sends an edition of his friend to me when he wants to make a pictorial comment on something I said or some social phenomenon. The Shaman, not at all a shy character, may appear in future columns. I hope you like him as I do. Will s comment that most grown-ups are people trying to recover from childhood sparked the thought that is the fodder for this column; why I love Cursillo. This is not the only reason but is very near the top of all the reasons. Cursillo, this wide front door of our Church, assists grown-up s recovery from childhood. Let me explain. It is a true blessing to be born of loving parents who walk the tightrope of love between doting and dominance. The middle of this continuum is love. Adults know how easy it is to fall off either side of the tightrope: doting ( my kids can do no wrong ) and dominance ( just because I say so ). Our image of God is very heavily influenced by nature (our surroundings) and nurture (our parents). When we are wise enough (age 13?!) to believe we know how to break the apron strings and move out into independence, we commence our exodus with the repertoire of skills and virtues we acquired during childhood. This is a dangerous time in every person s life because our balance is not very good, and we are creatures doomed to learn the hard way (a working definition of original sin ). Adulthood may be measured as finding our balance and keeping it with less frequent falling. Cursillo is a healthy environment where people who are willing take a step further into conversion and regain their balance. It is not a cult, a panacea, or a fad. It is a way wisdom is acquired like the wisdom Samuel Clemens wrote of when he penned these words: Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see. Clemens, a virulent anti-catholic and all things Christian, wound up writing thoughts that paraphrase the gospels (e.g. Mt. 25: 35-40) because truth is the terminus of all conversations that go on long enough. It is a normal experience for our soul-wisdom to lag our street-wisdom. The bumps and bruises of life may make us honest enough to admit to ourselves that all the decisions we ve made thus far in life got us where we are pretty much disconnected and/or wandering aimlessly in the desert of our choice. Cursillo is a step, maybe even the start of our transfiguration from spiritual childhood toward adulthood, where ambiguity is non-threatening even though it is ever present, where consequences are bearable because they are stops along the way and not the whole journey, and where trust is the stumbling-block only for those builders who believe their kingdom will outlast God s (Ps. 118: 22). Make a friend, be a friend and bring a friend to Christ where they will gain a new image of God. Cursillo is a launching pad for adults recovering from childhood. De Colores! Fr. Dan
