Winter Holography Workshop -- Session Two Date/Time: Fri Feb 13, 2009 Location: Student Optics Lab, UCSD Attendance: 65 Utilized red HeNe laser with red sensitive 4x5" film. Enspire Outreach Workshop (Photo Gallery) Date/Time: 10:30-12:30p, Wed 2/18/08 (also, preparation Sun 2/15, 2-7pm) Location: Student Optics Lab, UCSD Attendance: 125 Eighth graders, accompanied by 16 others Part of Enspire Outreach event, hosted by Triton Engineering Student Council, where 8th grade students from Pershing Middle School, and Gompers Charter Middle school visit UCSD to learn about engineering. Our workshop was a stop on a circuit of lab tours. We explained what hologram are, and how they are useful (eg security, sensors, art). Theoretical concepts were explained at an age-appropriate level using analogies, and visual aids such as a crude "hand made" scratch holograms. The guests observed many of our previouslymade holograms, alongside the objects they were based on. Finally, the students went into the darkroom where we exposed and developed holographic film live. Afterward every attending student received their own 3d hologram to keep (and show off to their friends/family/etc...). 3rd Winter GBM - "Optical Modualtors for Optical Communcaion", Prof Paul Yu Date/Time: Fri 3/6/09, 2-3p Attendance: 20 Professor Paul Yu gave an overview of some of the various different methods of Optical Modulation, as well as some of his own original research in fabrication of nanowires for use in optical modulators for optical fiber communication. Also discussed briefly some of the engineering challenges, and expected future job opportunities in optical communcation. OFC/NFOEC Attendance Location: San Diego Convention Center Date/Time: 3/22-3/26/09 Optical Fiber Conference. Attended short courses, and visited Exhibition floor. 4) Planned Activities Spring '09 Outreach - Girls Day Out, Tabling Expected Location: Price Center Ballroom, UC San Diego Expected Date/Time: Sat. Apr 18, 10:30a-1:30p Expected Attendance: 40-50 girls, accompanied by parents Outreach event hosted by Spawar Systems Center, San Diego to promote Engineering to Middleand High-School girls. Will host a table where we gave assorted optics demos, including many previously-made holograms. We also give advice and answered questions regarding how to college, and specifically engineering school, as well as how the theory behind our various demos relates to jobs in the real world. Make Solar Cells Workshop Expected Location: Student Optics Lab Expected Date/Time: Fri 4/24/09, 10a-3p Visitors will make dye-sensitized solar cells, using ITO Conductive glass, fine powderized Titanium Dioxide powder, and various organic electrolytes. As one steps of the process requires overnight soaking, we will bring out almost-finished samples from the night before, so that the visitors may be able to complete a working solar cell within the same day. Finally, we expect to power some LEDs/pinwheels, other small devices out in the sun.

Outreach - Engineering Explorations Expected Location: Student Optics Lab Expected Date/Time: Sat 5/2/09 Local High School Students will visit UCSD, to learn information about how to apply for Engineering School. We will likely either record some holograms, or make solar cells (depending on success of Solar cell workshop) Transfer Admit Day - Tabling and Panel Discussion Expected Location: Warren Mall/Engineering Courtyard, UCSD Expected Date: Sat 5/16/09 Plan to host a table to attract new members for next year, and/or particpate in a panel discussion where we offer advice to incoming engineering transfer students on how to succeed in school, as well as how to get involved in extracurricular activitiy (namely, our chapter) Spring GBM - Luxtera Rep. (a Local Photonics Company) Expected Expected Date: TBA (Late April) Speaker from a local Photonics Company, Luxtera, will talk about their product (integrated optoelectronics), as well as offer advice to engineers about to graduate about transitioning from academia, into the workforce. Movie Night/ End of the Year Rooftop Barbecue Expected Location: 3rd-floor balcony of EBU1 (part of ECE grad student lounge), UCSD Expected Date: TBA, June 2009 Description:We plan to project a movie against the wall of on a 3rd-floor balcoy Summer '09 Advanced Holography Workshop Series - Image-Plane Holograms (Possibly beginning early Spring, extending into summer) Most of our workshops up to this point were "one-step" processes, which involve exposing and developing a hologram within a few minutes. So far, this has mostly been run cdone byhapter officers as more or less a "Demo" aimed at attracting new recruits, and developing exposure. This workshop will be on an RSVP basis (rather than walk-in), and in this case the attendees themselves will actually participate in every step of the process (the setup/aligning, exposing, and developing). For this first series, rather than making hundreds of mediocre holograms, the goal will be to create a smaller number of larger, higher-quality "Image-Plane" holograms (where the object appears to be half behind, and half in front of the glass). This requires recording a master copy (as a tranmission hologram), then later, building a different setup to generate copies. SPIE Optics and Photonics Attendance As in previous years, several officers and membres will attend the Student Chapter Leadership conference, Tehnical Conference, and Expo. This year we expect to invest more in improving our tabletop setup for the Expo. poster demos, as well as some semi-permanent tabletop optics demos (eg transmission hologram viewer, freespace optics link using laser/photodiode) on small breadboards.
