Deadline March 16, 2018 Your complete application, including all required attachments, must be postmarked and received by March 16, 2018. Incomplete and late applications will not be accepted. INSTRUCTIONS: Please read the following instructions for important guidance on the best way to complete the application form. Before you begin the application form, please read the entire scholarship packet. By reading through the scholarship packet first, you will have important insight into why this scholarship was established, who is eligible to apply, qualifications, and how the reviewers will evaluate applicants and select recipients. A photo of the applicant must accompany the scholarship application. To make it easy for the applicant and the review committee, use the application form and create a title page for the essay topic. Please be sure to fill out the forms correctly. Please feel free to draw upon the expertise of people around you -- high school counselors, financial aid officers, teachers, parents, friends who may have already been through the process, and POZ members. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. Furthermore, failure to follow instructions will lead to disqualification. Applicants found who make false or misleading statements will be disqualified from the selection process. 2
SCHOLARSHIP DESCRIPTION Psi Omicron Zeta Finer Womanhood Scholarship Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. was founded on January 16, 1920, at Howard University in Washington, D.C. The illustrious five founders adopted four guiding principles: Scholarship, Service, Sisterly Love and Finer Womanhood. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority members are college educated women and undergraduate students seeking to positively affect our communities. The ladies of the Psi Omicron Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. are a group of women committed to excellence in all areas of life. We strive tirelessly to exude the ideals our beloved organization was founded upon: Scholarship, Service, Sisterly Love and Finer Womanhood. This academic scholarship is awarded to graduating high school seniors in Prince William County. The Scholarship is to recognize the perseverance and academic resilience of students. It also serves to encourage those students who continue to pursue academic and career goals despite extraordinary personal and academic challenges. Finer Womanhood Scholarship Award High School Seniors Applicants Psi Omicron Zeta CHAPTER of ZETA PHI BETA SORORITY, INCORPORATED is honored to announce to the Community, the 2nd Annual Finer Womanhood Scholarship Award to graduating High School seniors from Prince William County. Psi Omicron Zeta Chapter s Scholarship Program provides scholarships to deserving high school graduating seniors intending to pursue a course of study at either a two-year or four-year educational institution. It is the ideal of our organization to inspire, encourage, and assist students who are preparing for college through this essay contest. The award recipient will receive a $500 stipend toward tuition at the college or university of his/her choice. Scholarship recipients must attend ZETA PHI BETA SORORITY, INCORPORATED/ Psi Omicron Zeta CHAPTER S, Finer Womanhood Brunch Awards Presentation on Saturday, May 20, 2018, from 11 am to 1 pm at George Mason Hylton Performing Arts Center, 10960 George Mason Circle, Manassas, VA 20109. Honors/Awards/Recognitions Must Show a Financial need Award Amount: Minimum $500 Scholarship funds will be released directly to the college/university, once the recipient submits of evidence of his/her enrollment (i.e., proof of registration, school's bursar information, etc.) to the Scholarship Committee. Judging Criteria for Essays: Scholarship essay submissions can receive a maximum score of 100 points, according to the following measurements: Focus/Development 40 points: The main message of the piece, the theme, with supporting details that enrich and develop that theme. - Writing clear connection to the selected prompt. - A topic is developed to fully respond to the prompt. Conventions/Mechanics/Spelling 25 points: The mechanical correctness of the piece; spelling, punctuation, capitalization, grammar usage, and paragraphing. - Frequent errors will result in the loss of points. - Provides transitions and variety of sentences. - Accurate use of punctuation, grammar, and spelling in the essay. Word Choice/Language 10 points: The use of rich, colorful, and precise language that moves and enlightens the reader. The rhythm and flow of the language; the sound of word patterns; the way in which the writing plays to the ear, not just to the eye. - The student s word choice is formal and academic. - Language is sophisticated, natural and not repetitious. Originality/Organization 10 points: The internal structure, thread of central meaning, logical and sometimes intriguing pattern or sequence of the ideas. - Strong, engaging introduction which may include quote/anecdote/statistic with source and shows individual s personality. (Avoid posing questions or providing dictionary definitions.) - Avoids clichés and generic statements. - Appropriate and collegiate presentation of ideas.
