Joseph J. Jacques Jr. Post 7945 THE POST OBSERVER 2016 Issue 4 10217 Quivas Street, Thornton, CO 80260 303-438-6700 JULY AUGUST POST WEBSITE: POST FACEBOOK www.myvfwpost7945.org Thornton VFW 7945 Joseph J. Jacques Jr. FROM YOUR COMMANDER: Greetings, I hope this finds everyone in good health as we move forward into 2016-2017. My Comrades have elected me Commander of Post 7945 for the upcoming term and some may not know much about me. I joined the Marine Corps January 20, 1963. I spent 13 months in Vietnam in Da Nang. I was in Vietnam June, 1965 and departed July, 1966. I was station in Yuma Arizona until my release, January 21, 1967 at the rank of Sergeant (E5). Here is my Bio. My name is David Garcia (Dave) and I am 73 years young, married to the love of my life, Linda Garcia. We have been together for 46 years and we have raised three children, Dave Jr. 45, Damon 42, and Tiffani 35. They have graced us with four grandchildren; Noah James, Olivia Kate, Sophie Isabella, and our youngest, Devin James Wilson, 9 months. My wife and I reside in Littleton, where we have lived for over 40 years and call this home. I retired from AT&T in 2002 after 33 years and then worked for USPS for another 13 years before retiring again in 2015. My hobbies are baseball (I m still playing) and will be going to Arizona this year (29 th year), for the MSBL (Men s Senior Baseball League) World Series. I hope to play 30 years in Arizona before I hang up my glove and baseball shoes. I also enjoy fishing and have yet to get a line in the water this year, but will soon. You may also know my brothers, Phil Garcia and George Sandoval, who are both Past Commanders of Post 7945. They both have served many Chairs for 7945. Phil is currently the Post Chaplain and Buddy Poppy Chairman, and George is Jr. Vice Commander. My duties until nominated and elected Commander for the coming year were the Adjutant and Advocate for the past 20 years. I feel Post 7945 has been blessed with many GOOD Veterans who have served many positions to keep our Post successful. I also feel with the leadership this Post has, I will continue that trait and, with their help, become the best I can be for this Post. Dave Garcia, Commander Post 7945

************************************************************************************ FROM YOUR PRESIDENT Greetings to all, I would like to start by saying thank you to Shelley Schlieman for a great year as the Auxiliary President. On behalf of Shelley, I would like to thank everyone who does so much to help and support our Veterans. Great Job to all of the chairmen and members whom worked so hard. There were many awards given at the State Convention in June. As the new year begins, I look forward to working with Commander Dave Garcia and the members. We are excited to have the male members of the Auxiliary and all of the new ideas they will bring. Our Department President, Linda Reinpold s theme this year is Keeping Veterans Close To Our Heart. I know we have many things we can do to get this accomplished. May God continue to watch over and bless each and every one of us, especially those serving to protect us. Brigitte M. Dolan, President Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 7945 ************************************************************************************************************************ CHAPLAINS Phil Garcia 303-655-9115 Shirley Colvin 303-427-2982 Please call our Chaplains, Phil or Shirley with any card requests due to illness, hospitalization or deaths. Funeral luncheons will only be provided for deceased members of our Post or Auxiliary, upon request of the family. If the deceased was not a member of our Post or Auxiliary, the family may contact Doug Gohr, (303-438-6700) about use of the Post for a luncheon. TAPS : CANCER GRANT CHAIRMAN Shirley Colvin 303-427-2982 The National and our Auxiliary Cancer Grant applications are available at the Post. Please contact me at 303-427-2982 if you need any information. The Auxiliary Grant can be mailed to me at 8381 Delaware, Denver CO 80221.

MEMBERSHIP CHAIRMAN Lennie Dolan, Treasurer Auxiliary members, the 2016-2017 Membership year begins July 1 st so it is again time to send in your continuous dues. We reached our 100% for the 2015-2016 year in March, and I would again like to thank you for helping us achieve that goal. I hope that between now and December 1 st you all send your $25 dues in so that your name will be entered into our December drawing. After December 31 st you are not considered a member in good standing although you still have until June 30 th to pay for this year and you have no chance for the life membership drawing. This year we will be drawing for TWO life memberships! If you decide to convert your continuous membership to a life membership and your name is drawn we will reimburse you the cost of your life. At the National Convention the end of July a resolution will be brought to increase the life membership fees and it looks like they will almost double. This would take effect December 31 st so if you have been considering becoming a life member this would be the time to take advantage of the still low rates. The life membership fee is based on your age and I ve included the schedule for you to look at. You can send your $25 continuous dues or life membership conversion fee to me at 1170 Fulton Street, Aurora CO 80010. If you have any questions about this, please call me at 303-341-7488. Thanks! Present Life Membership Fees (these fees may almost double by December 31) Thru 20 = $220, 21-25 = $210, 26-30 = $200, 31-35 = $190, 36-40 = $185, 41-45 = $175, 46-50 = $170, 51-55 = $160, 56-60 = $150, 61-65 = $140, 66-70 = $130, 71-75 = $115, 76-80 = $95, 81-85 =$75, 85-90 =$60, 91 over = $50 JULY AND AUGUST BREAKFASTS The kitchen crew needs a vacation and time for a little R & R. We will not be serving Sunday breakfasts during July and August as we know you will all be enjoying our beautiful Colorado summer with weekend camping, fishing, hiking, gardening, or family vacations. We want to enjoy these things too. We will be back in September, refreshed, relaxed and eager to again provide you with a great, inexpensive, no wait in line Sunday morning breakfast. We thank all of you for your patronage and hope we don t lose you to the big chain $10-12 breakfasts. Thanks again, Chuck, Post, and Auxiliary. PS: While we take a break Dougie G s will too. Sunday hours will begin at noon till Sept.

HAPPY 4TH, INDEPENDENCE DAY What a great long weekend we have with the 4 th being on a Monday this year. Everyone can hit the roads Friday for three days out of the rat race or plan for that big family picnic, firework show. The kitchen will be closed Friday July 1 st and there will be no Karaoke that night. Have fun, be safe and see you back on Friday the 8 th for steaks, burgers, and singing. JULY AND AUGUST The Auxiliary will be hosting Friday night dinners in July and the Post will host in August. There are several bands that will be here on Saturday nights so keep your calendar handy and come dance on our newly expanded and refinished dance floor. The Post and Auxiliary will be holding their monthly meetings on the second Wednesday of the month at 7:00. On August 27 th our Post has been asked to host the Department Commander, Allen Stone, and Department President, Linda Reinpold s Homecoming. This would be a good time to come and meet the new Commander and President. They will be serving food and greeting members from 12 to 4 so stop by and say hello. Our newest patio cover should be here soon and we invite all of you to enjoy our backyard. Memorial Day May 30, 2016 Today is Memorial Day. We're paying tribute to those who died for the USA. Many soldiers died so that we can be free. It means a lot to you and it means a lot to me. Some fought with guns, others fought with tanks. They gave everything for us and I give my thanks.
