Vessel Safety Check, 1st Lt Rich Malin Techsoup software Our Vessel Safety Check program aims to minimize the loss of life, personal injury, property damage, and environmental impact by performing equipment safety inspections aboard recreational boats. At the same time, the program seeks to maximize the enjoyment of U.S. waterways by recreational boaters. Examiner discussions with recreational boaters motivate boaters to maintain and operate their boats in a safe manner, to take boating safety courses, to increase their knowledge and skills in boating, and to promote safe boating. Pittsburgh is blessed with a number of dedicated Vessel Safety Examiners who perform VSCs in four states. We are looking for more members to get involved in our program. You will become certified to perform Vessel Safety Checks, and be a safer boater yourself. Our goal is to have a certified examiner at each local marina (Fox Chapel Marina, Oakmont Yacht Club, Bell Harbor, O Hara Landing, Washington s Landing Marina, Aspinwall, Peggy s Harbor, Lighthouse, River Forest, and Schenley). It is not difficult to get certified. We will supply you with a book to read and then assist you through the exam. After you pass the on-line test you will have to do 5 supervised vessel safety checks. You are then a Certified USPS Vessel Safety Check Examiner, and on your own. Techsoup Stock is a technology product philanthropy service for non-profit organizations. They facilitate and distribute multiple product philanthropy software from a centralized web-based platform. As a member of Techsoup, Pittsburgh Power Squadron can purchase PC and server software from numerous national vendors at heavily discounted prices, so that members can use the software to further the aims of the Squadron. The Techsoup website (www.techsoup.org) lists the names of software vendors such as Adobe, Cisco, Intuit, Microsoft, and Symantec. Not all vendor products are distributed through Techsoup, but many are. The donated software titles are listed on the Techsoup Stock website. Unfortunately, USPS and its member squadrons are not currently eligible to purchase Adobe software through Techsoup. Our national organization is seeking to reinstate our Adobe eligibility, but has not yet succeeded. In past years we have ordered copies of Symantec s Norton 360 for use by Squadron members. These subscriptions run for a year. If you are a current user of Norton 360, you can use the about click to see how many days your subscription has to run. You need a separate Norton subscription for each of your PCs and laptops. I now have Symantec s next update of Norton 360, called Norton 360 Version 3.0. The cost to Pittsburgh Power Squadron members is $5.00 for one subscription, $8.00 for two subscriptions, or $10.00 for three subscriptions. Let me know at robert.brandenstein@verizon.net how many subscriptions you would like, and I will get them to you. P/C Bob Brandenstein 10 October 2009 October2009 3

Educational Dept, Lt/C Vince Manetti, JN D/7 Fall Conference - Cleveland Marriott.USPS University Seminars USPS University is HERE and offers a series of short, focused courses on subjects of interest to boat operators and crews.
