PRECEPTOR HANDBOOK Fall 2017

INTRODUCTION TO THE CLINICAL PATIENT CARE PRECEPTOR EXPERIENCE The preceptorship experience was developed to provide the UALR Nursing Student with the opportunity to use the nursing process with a variety of patients while providing total patient care, and apply the principles of management and leadership in a clinical setting. The nursing student performs these skills under the supervision of an experienced Registered Nurse. Along with this RN preceptor, the student has the opportunity to organize and prioritize the care of patients, delegate certain parts of that care to others, efficiently manage time, and resolve difficult work situations. The preceptorship is 36 hours over 5 weeks. During this time the student works the same hours as the preceptor as set forth in the written contract, completes shift objective logs, participates in evaluation of the preceptor, and has the opportunity for real life experiences. The preceptors have been selected by each employing agency based on preceptor criteria, have been matched with students by the N2350 teaching team, have received a Preceptor Handbook, and have the opportunity to contact faculty about course requirements and objectives. The preceptors have valuable expertise to offer students. Prior to the preceptorship the student will meet with his/her preceptor to arrange schedules and complete the student-preceptor contract. The clinical faculty will approve the time schedules. Students are not allowed to perform in a practicing role in the facilities until the schedule has been approved by faculty. A student may work only with the assigned preceptor. If the preceptor is ill, the student may not attend clinical and must renegotiate the clinical hours in writing with the preceptor and faculty. Should the student not be able to attend a clinical, the student will renegotiate the clinical hours in writing with the preceptor and faculty. The faculty must be informed of a student s clinical absence, for whatever reason, and the times a student is/will be in the clinical area. The student will wear the UALR uniform and identification, unless otherwise required by the facility. Faculty will be available at all times Monday through Friday via pager for the facility assigned to the faculty member. From 7p Friday nights through 5 am Monday mornings an on call faculty member will be available via pager. These faculty assignments are provided to students via email at the start of the preceptorship experience. All UALR policies are in effect during the preceptorship. Faculty Contacts: Dr. Charles P. Molsbee, MSN, RN, CNE, Office 569-8081, cpmolsbee@ualr.edu Mr. Josh Young, BSN, RN, Office 683-7048, jtyoung@ualr.edu
