A Naemi aong Fire Safety Officers of Hamad Medica Corporation visited Brigadier Saad Aman A Suaiti Assistant Director of Qatar Civi Defense. During the meeting they mainy discussed about master fire dri for HMC hospitas in association and coordination with QCDD and Qatar Nationa Command Center. Resut of the meeting aso set the points of nominee from QCDD and HMC for Communication, enhancing hospitas inspections, training for OHS and security staffs, required standards and code of fire and ife safety practices. Radiation Protection Course The Radiation Safety Section of the Occupationa Heath and Safety Department conducted a Radiation Protection Course on 9th March 2013 with 65 attendees from HMC and non HMC staff. This course enabes them to appy for the Radiation License, which is mandatory for working in the radiation fied in Qatar. The next Radiation Protection Course is schedued on 20th Apri 2013 from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM at Hamad Education Center. New Staff in the OHS Department Ms. Hind Gaii has joined the Occupationa Heath and Safety Department in the capacity of Environmenta Safety Inspector. Gaii has taken up this new and chaenging roe starting 11th March 2013 and wi be seated in the office behind SMC. P1
Occupationa Heath & Safety Newsetter A Wakra Waste Treatment Pant HMC being committed to pubic heath and environmenta protection aims to promote effective technoogy for the treatment and fina disposa of its medica wastes to prevent the heath risk associated with exposure to heath care waste for both heath workers and the pubic. With such, it is indeed a breakthrough for the Environmenta Safety Section of Occupationa Heath and Safety Department to have estabished new Waste Treatment Pant in A Wakra Hospita. On the 18th of November 2012, an experimenta operation of the pant took pace. Starting January 1st of this year 2013, it was fuy operationa with two shift duties managed by the Environmenta Safety Section. A Wakra Wastes Treatment Pant is equipped with two Autocaves and one four-bade Shedder. Its capacity ranges from 2,000 3,000 kiograms wastes per day. It was ensured that a infectious wastes sent to the pant wi be treated within 24 hours. Occupationa Heath & Safety Newsetter OHS Excursion Trip A team of 60 members (OHS empoyees aong with their famiies and friends) eaded by Mr. Mohamed Fayyazuddin (inset) headed ast Friday to The Khor A-Adaid (The Inand Sea), one of Qatar s most appeaing attractions as part of department excursion. This outdoor excursion offered empoyees a chance to et their hair down and interact with coworkers in a fun, reaxed setting paired with BBQ as compiments cascaded in. This excursion boosted the empoyee morae and the positive impact was seen with everyone back to work on Sunday with high spirits and motivation. 9th OHS Heath and Weness Wakathon Wearing their sports shoes & tracks the participants gathered at the staff medica centre for the 9th Bi Weeky wakathon and waked in the premises of Hamad Medica City. They demonstrated a sense of pride and whoehearted support for the Heath and Weness programme organized by the OHS Department. Waking is regarded as a safe and heathy way to exercise and burn caories, without putting too much strain on the body. A good combination of diet, exercise and activity are key to staying fit and heathy. The wakathon takes pace twice a month, every other Thursday from 2:00PM to 3:00 PM, and we fee very positive about more peope across HMC joining us as this initiative is gaining momentum. P3
Occupationa Heath & Safety Newsetter Continuous Professiona Deveopment Ms. Catherine, Environmenta Safety Supervisor presented a topic about Persistent Organic Poutants or POPs. These are chemica substances that persist in the environment, bioaccumuate through the food web, and pose a risk of causing adverse effects on human heath and the environment. The objective of the presentation was to know the different POPs, their sources, their characteristics and goba actions taken in this regard. During her presentation she further highighted Stockhom Convention on POPs, an internationa treaty signed in 2001 and effective from May 2004, which aims to protect human heath and the environment from POPs. The key eements of the Convention incude the requirement of deveoped countries to provide new and additiona financia resources and measures for the eimination of the production and use of intentionay produced POPs; eimination of unintentionay produced POPs where feasibe; management and disposa of POPs wastes in an environmentay sound manner. And asty, cosignatories of the Convention agreed to outaw nine of the dirty dozen chemicas, imit the use of DDT to maaria contro, and curtai inadvertent production of dioxins and furans. Mr. Antonio O. Cawaing presented a topic on Gobay Harmonized System (GHS) of Cassification and Labeing of Chemicas. The presentation covered the background of GHS, Its benefits, impacts, Goba adaptation and impementation of GHS. He expained that a gobay harmonized and compatibe abeing System incuding Materia Safety Data Sheets and easiy understandabe symbos shoud be avaiabe by the year 2000. This can be beneficia in many. It can enhance protection of humans and environment, faciitate internationa trade in chemicas, reduce the need for testing and evauation, assist countries and internationa organizations to ensure sound management of chemicas etc. Presenter: Ms. Catherine E. Cawaing Topic: Gobay Harmonized System (GHS) Impact according to OSHA, the annuaized savings for empoyers of between $585 and $798 miion. Most of this through increased productivity for H&S managers and ogistics personne. A Naemi, Executive Director of Occupation Heath and Safety Department, attended the regiona meeting on Pre-Project Assistance and Project Design of ARASIA (Arab- Asia) Proposed Concepts on Nucear Medicine, Water Management and Soi & Water hed in Vienna, Austria. A presentation about Nucear Medica Services in Hamad was presented by Dr. Huda M. A Naemi, Executive Director OHS Department, in ARASIA to show how Hamad Medica Corporation is improving the services by operating a positron center that was opened few months ago. Preproject discussions were hed for a future project, panned to be competed by 2018. Dr. Huda A Naemi wi be the counterpart with IAEA in the mentioned project. P5
