Frequently Asked Questions 1. How does Hurst Review differ from other NCLEX Review companies? Hurst NCLEX Review titled a Critical Thinking & Application Approach follows a philosophy that students should respond to NCLEX questions based on an in-depth understanding of core nursing content. In other words, we are not a review that focuses on test wiseness, as the primary way to answer an NCLEX question; we focus on application of nursing knowledge. At Hurst, we know that when students understand the why about causes, signs and symptoms and treatments, they can critically think through any NCLEX question. We are an interactive review that encourages students to take what they learned in nursing school, understand how it integrates together and determine how they can take a certain amount of core content and apply to many nursing situations. It is a thinking class!!! This is not to say that we do not incorporate or value testing strategies. We know that it is very important for the graduate to understand the NCLEX mind-set and approach each question with our test taking strategies, but only after they have applied core content knowledge. Both of these approaches assure that the student will pass the first time guaranteed. 2. How long has Hurst Review been helping students pass the NCLEX? Hurst Review was established in 1988 by Marlene Hurst. Marlene discovered she had a gift of helping nursing students to pass the NCLEX. She was encouraged to start Hurst review after helping two separate nursing programs raise their pass rates for the NCLEX. Hurst Review Services Orientation 1

3. Where is your home office? Hurst Review Services is located in Brookhaven, Mississippi. However, we provide reviews in 43 states and have regional directors in 8 regions of the country. 4. How does Hurst Review keep up with all the changes with the NCLEX? Hurst Review attends any and all NCLEX invitational conventions and meetings. When any changes are made to the NCLEX, Hurst Review is actively involved in updating our material we present in classes to ensure students are fully informed. We also, stay abreast of any life threatening protocol changes published by CDC, AHA, Joint Commission, etc. 5. How are faculty selected and how are they trained? Our instructors are all RN s with at least 5 years experience in nursing. After a vetting process which includes a sample video, they are enrolled in an orientation program that requires they learn our scripted lectures, attend a boot camp led by our faculty enrichment department and attend and participate in a training review. After this process, approved instructors are assigned to teach independently. All of our faculty are given training on the NCLEX exam and we assure that they have expertise in preparing students to answer the NCLEX way. Having NCLEX experts who are teaching scripted lectures assures quality control of our product and our faculty. This process distinguishes our faculty and our teaching process from other companies. 6. How do I schedule a live review at my school? To host a live review at your school, Hurst Review requests a commitment from 20 students who will be attending the live review. Once interest is shown, we will list the review with predetermined dates on the website so that students may register for the review. The dates of the review will determined by the students based on the student s convenience. The review is 3 days long and last from 8 AM to 4 PM daily. Many students like Hurst Review Services Orientation 2

to schedule reviews during their spring breaks, summer break, or Christmas breaks. Hurst Review will also need a lecture room (this may be a class room), a DVD player or LCD and screen, microphone, white board and sound system. 7. How do students register for a live or online review? Student s will register online through our website (www.hurstreview.com), for the live review or the online review package. The live review requires a $50 deposit to register and the online review requires that you pay the entire cost of $300. 8. What materials will a student receive in their review and what do they need to bring? Students will receive a student manual with all the material covered in the class. On the last day they will receive access to our 4 th & 5 th day materials, Q Review, and 14 day online access. They need to bring a photo ID and proof of payment from their account and a writing utensil 9. How much is a live review and how can I pay for the class? Do you offer payment plans? The live review is $350.00 Once you have registered for the class, you will have a $300.00 balance. The remaining balance should be paid in full prior to or on the first day of the class. We do offer a payment plan for students who wish to pay with checks. The payment plan is accomplished by writing two checks (each check written for half the amount of your remaining balance and one check post dated for one month from the first day of the class). Hurst Review Services Orientation 3

10. What if I can t attend a live review or what if there is not a live review offered in my area. What other options do I have if I still want to be a part of your review? You can register for an online review (www.hurstreview.com ). You will hear the exact same material presented in a live review, but in the comfort of your home! The online review is $300.00 for a 90 day unlimited subscription. See our website for directions on how to register. 11. I have heard that if I attend a live review that I can attend another review at no extra charge. Is this true? YES!!! If you have attended a live review and are paid in full, you may attend any other live review we offer in the country at no additional cost to you (from Hurst Review). To register for a repeat live review, you go to your Hurst account and click, sign up for a free live review. Bring your old student manual to class and a receipt to validate that you are paid in full which can be printed from your account. If you attend more than 2 live reviews, you forfeit your money back option on the guarantee. 12. Will students that are repeating the Live review receive another 14 day access to the online program? NO!!! Students receive the 14 day online one time and that is with their first live review. The 14 days begins on midnight of the last day of the review and ends at midnight 14 days later. There will be NO adjustments of the dates or any extensions. This offering is icing on the cake. The student has had live lecture on all the videos that they receive for 14 days and they will not miss anything if they never access the 14 days. The Maternity, Complications of Maternity, Pediatrics, NCLEX Strategy Questions and Management and Delegation are available for 1 year after graduation. Hurst Review Services Orientation 4

13. Do repeat students get a new book with each review they attend? NO!!!Repeat students are to bring their Hurst Review student book to every class they attend. Our philosophy of repetition, repetition, repetition requires that they build on their knowledge with each live review that they attend. We do not want them to start over filling in the blanks. We also have situations where students buy extra books, then they sell their account to a friend and then the friend shows up for a free live review. The student also must bring an ID and a printed transaction where you will find instructions that include bring your book to class with you. 14. What do I do if my hospital or nursing school is paying for or is reimbursing me for the review? Rather than letter of attendance, please fill out attendance form and have signed by instructor each day. It is located on page iii of your student book. 15. What are other schools in this area that you have conducted a review? Please go to our website at www.hurstreview.com where you can view our live review schedule by city or state. We do reviews in over 40 states. 16. Can Hurst Review help me pass the HESI test, ATI or any other NCLEX readiness test that I am required to take at school? Hurst Review has MANY students who are required by his or her school to take the HESI test register for our review. These students have reported that Hurst Review DID help them to pass the HESI test. Although Hurst Review is an NCLEX review class, we teach the core content, which you must understand to answer the questions Hurst Review Services Orientation 5

on the HESI test or any NCLEX readiness test you might be required to take during nursing school. We do not calculate any statistics on our review and any other testing programs. 17. Do you have separate classes for RN s and PN s to prepare? Core concepts reviewed by Hurst are based on what every nurse needs to know to practice safely which is what the NCLEX RN and NCLEX PN evaluate. For this reason, our live and online Hurst Review course designed to prepare both the RN and PN student for their boards. The role of the PN is constantly expanding and the major difference that we assume in our program is in the area of management and delegation. We do caution our PN students to be sure to apply the limitations that the nurse practice act of their state defines in delegation as it is different in every state. In our scenarios, we focus on concepts of setting priorities in client assignments (who you see first) and room assignments (which clients can share rooms) all of which are PN decisions. 18. How long does the student have to study Hurst Review s materials before he or she takes the NCLEX test? There is NO magical equation for the amount of time a student should study the packet prior to scheduling the NCLEX. EVERYONE studies differently. You are ready to take the test, when you can VERBALIZE the entire packet and you can teach it as your instructor did during your review. 19. How do I handle test anxiety? Students are not unsuccessful on the NCLEX due to test anxiety. Students are unsuccessful due to knowledge deficit. The students do not understand the core content. The NCLEX is about applying the knowledge the student has to the situation they have never heard of before. 18. What if the review has posted that it is almost full and to call in? Students must call the office and will be added if there are any Hurst Review Services Orientation 6

available seats according to the maximum seating capacity for the classroom. 19. How does Hurst identify what is core content? The best answer is that it is knowledge that has stood the test of time. First, it is based on knowledge that Marlene identified when she worked with remediation students. She not only determined what subject areas were in deficit but also the lack of depth in the understanding of the material. This base knowledge was expanded to include the knowledge required in the NCLEX Practice Statements, the standards of care identified by AHA, CDC, TJC and other regulatory agencies, textbook knowledge and the expertise of over 100 Hurst Faculty. This proven core nursing content has helped over 100,000 nursing student pass their NCLEX Exam. 20. Do you give a pre-test or post-test? Hurst review does not give a pre-test or post-test. The NCLEX is a multi-logical test that requires that the student integrate knowledge to answer a question about a pediatric, type I diabetic client who is pregnant for example. If you fashion a review for a group based on a pretest, then you will lose the value of learning to think in a multi-logical, critical thinking way. This testing process consumes valuable class time and many students say they score lower on the post-test and are then very confused. Hurst chooses to start all students at a basic level and progress to the complex, each lecture builds on the knowledge learned in the previous lecture. 21. Is your Q Review a predictor test? Since the NCLEX is a computer adaptive test, administered like no other nursing test, we do not try to mislead students by predicting success on the NCLEX. Our Q Review test bank allows the student to practice 6 NCLEX style test that are randomly pulled according to the eight client needs categories of the NCLEX test plan. We pull them randomly so that students cannot compare test and skew their scores. The administration of these tests is close to an actual NCLEX test, but it is not computer adaptive. Each test is based on the Hurst Review Services Orientation 7

average NCLEX exam which is 125 questions long and allows 90 seconds for each question. As in the NCLEX, there is a clock and calculator available and all alternate format questions follow the rules of the NCLEX. The student is given a printed certificate stating how well they did in each category, with a cumulative percentage score on the test. We provide them with access to the test with rationale for both the right and wrong answer and allow them to review these test for a year after graduation. 22. When should students take the review? Students should have been exposed to all of their medical-surgical courses before taking the review. As stated earlier, we take what they have been taught in nursing school, help them to focus on the why, and help them rethink the material in an integrated multilogical way. If they have not been exposed to the material, then the class is not as beneficial to them. We recommend that students take Hurst as they enter the last semester of school or at graduation. Once a student pays for a live review, they can take it again free of charge or they can purchase the online review for the discounted price of $50 for a 30 day access. 23. How can we set up a review or informational session at your school? We will gladly provide your students with an informational session to inform them about the benefits of our program, or if you would like to view an online informational session, please email us at info@hurstreview.com to set this up. If your students choose Hurst Review, we will require at least 20 new students for a live review. Many times we work with other schools in your area to help meet this number. Hurst Review Services Orientation 8

As a nursing school faculty, we would love to talk to you personally and answer any questions or give you a 7 day preview of our online program. 24. What is our cancellation policy? We have a 10 day cancellation policy. This allows cancellation of travel arrangement and book mailing. Students will be contacted by phone or email providing then with options of other reviews, the online review, or money back. 25. Do we have package discounts? The Hurst Review cost has not changed in years. We work very hard to keep cost down and continue to enhance our product. 26. How soon do I need to sign up Can I get all my money back? A live review must have approximately 20 people in the class, so we need you to sign up as soon as possible to assure your review makes. Also, we ship books to review two weeks ahead of time, so be sure your name is on the list. It only cost $50 to sign up and if the review does not make we will give you your money back. 27. Can I sign up as a freshman and use as a nursing school review? We are not a nursing school review so we do not try to cover every nursing school subject. We recommend that the student have all their med-surg classed before our review so we can take what they know and show them how to critically think. Ideally, the student can take our course before their last semester and then study the content and be ready in May. Hurst Review Services Orientation 9

28. If I lose my books, can I purchase another? Hurst Review does not sell books outside the live review. When students lose a book, we recommend they purchase the supplement online to print a new book and fill in the blanks form the lectures. A book with blanks is not helpful without the lectures. 29. Can I put off my 14 day online? I think I am being cheated out of this time. You are getting everything you that you received in the 4-day review and even more. The 3-days of live review followed by 1 year access of maternity, complications of maternity, NCLEX Strategy Questions, Pediatrics and Management and Delegation provides all of the 4-day live review. The 14 day online is icing on the cake for those students who would like to watch again to individualize your study needs. As always you can continue to purchase the 30 day online for $50 30. Why does a nursing graduate need an NCLEX review? At Hurst Review we look at it like this...in nursing school students learn from their instructors and then draw from this newfound knowledge as they practice nursing. In the hospital they see the real nursing world and role model behaviors they have observed from nurses in practice. Now, finally to increase success on the NCLEX, they need to understand the mindset of NCSBN. Understanding the philosophy of NCSBN, their goal of protecting the public and how they view the brand new nurse must be understood for the graduate to Hurst Review Services Orientation 10

answer NCLEX questions correctly. At Hurst review we believe that preparing for the NCLEX is a three-fold approach: classroom, clinical and NCLEX Review. We at Hurst see ourselves as taking what graduates do know, helping them integrate the information and apply their knowledge to many situations, the NCLEX way. We have found that if graduates understand a certain amount of core concept knowledge, so well established that no one can change their mind about it, then they can problem solve through the NCLEX. Without the confidence of knowing core content the NCLEX way, the student experiences anxiety that creates doubt and uncertainty causing them to question what they do know or don t know. This is often the problem, due to the amount of information that must be taught in nursing school, they are confused. They don t know what they need to study or how to begin preparing for this very important test. An NCLEX Review the Hurst way helps students organize this information and gives them a plan of study that is neat, organized and easily understood.
