PURPOSE OF THE POSITION A mental health nurse is registered with the Nursing Council of New Zealand under the Registered Nurse or Nurse Practitioner scope of practice, and is authorised to practice in the area of mental health and addictions. This role requires the nurse to work with the MDT and other agencies to provide a collaborative service to service users family/whanau. NATURE AND SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITIES Key Accountability Standards / Achievements Registered nurse Plan, establish, maintain and evaluate therapeutic relationships with service users, family/whaanau and others. Establish trust by developing rapport, reducing anxiety, encouraging service user, family/whaanau participation and clarifying issues related to privacy. Establish a therapeutic environment in collaboration with other health professionals Facilitate the process of comprehensive nursing assessment. Contribute and participate in the comprehensive clinical MH & A assessment, including completion of core documentation regarding mental state assessment, risk assessment, and clinical note writing that is reflective of assessments, intervention and rehabilitative treatment planning. Provide a range of clinical interventions that support the service user s recovery. This may include Motivational Interviewing, CBT, DBT, and Sensory Modulation depending on your individual skills and training. Collaborate with service user, family/whaanau, and other colleagues to develop a nursing plan for care. Communicate nursing plan for care to service user and other members of the therapeutic team. Implement nursing care in a systematic, coordinated, caring and consistent manner. Document assessment outcomes, nursing management plan, strategies for care and outcomes. Initiate steps to address deficiencies/limitations in the nursing and therapeutic plans. Evaluate and document the effectiveness of planned interventions in consultation with the service user, and in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team. In conflict situations will be required to exercise sound judgement, negotiation and persuasiveness skills, toward facilitating a workable outcome. PROBLEM COMPLEXITY Will be regularly challenged by a wide range of complex mental health issues including suicide prevention and co-existing problems. There will be a requirement to be able to prioritise issues and negotiate time frames, while still providing a quality customer service. The range of problems will be diverse and require solutions customised to meet the circumstances of the service user. Therefore opportunities will arise to provide innovative options to the service user based on proven outcomes. There will be demands to meet deadlines, maintain accuracy and quality of information. Failure to do so could impact on the organisation in terms of risk to service users, colleagues or the organisation.
