BACK COVER REVIEW - In The Land of Nine Dragons, is the most detailed battalion level history I have seen. This book relates not only facts and figures in fascinating detail it also communicates first-hand the very personal recollections and remembrances of events in the course of the Battalion s time in Vietnam. This is the stuff of going to war and the soul of warfare as experienced by the people who actually fight wars, the blood and guts of the art of being a soldier in combat. The fact that this book is about what is arguably our least popular and least understood 20th Century conflict is noteworthy because it makes an important contribution to the history of what has been variously described as a national tragedy and a defeat. There was no defeat for these soldiers, there was regret, concern, and pride in their service. They were warriors, they led the fight! This book makes clear in case it wasn t already clear that the cost of war was borne by the men and women who served in Vietnam, not by uninvolved politicians and distant bystanders or sometime movie-makers. The stories here relate to the memories of any Vietnam Vet. It has been said that we all fought different wars in Vietnam because things were so different from place to place and time to time. That may be so but something of the universal truth of war - good and bad can be found in these pages. Every veteran, every student, every political authority, every citizen, should read this recounting of events and conditions they are reading about reality. This book will preserve the memory of what they did in Vietnam a war that still haunts those who served there and those who did not. May God be with the living and the dead members of the 2nd Battalion, 60th Infantry, 9th Infantry Division. Lieutenant General Patrick M. Hughes United States Army, Retired platoon leader 4th Battalion, 39th Infantry in Vietnam FROM HIS FOREWORD - What I saw in Vietnam in 1971-73 convinced me that the soldiers in the 2/60 and all the US units in Vietnam had accomplished far more than any of us realized. We set the stage for the Clear and Hold strategy that actually defeated the Viet Cong insurgency. After we withdrew, South Vietnam fell to an invasion by North Vietnam, not to the Viet Cong. General James J. Lindsay United States Army, Retired former CO, 2nd Bn, 60th Inf, 1968 FROM HIS FOREWORD - This book is a meaningful tribute to the extraordinary heroism of the men of the Battalion, particularly those who courageously gave their lives, who successfully overcame the hazardous and difficult Delta terrain and inflicted defeat after defeat upon an elusive enemy. Major General Ira A. Hunt, Jr. United States Army, Retired former Bde CO & Chief of Staff, 9th Inf Div, 1968-69
