ACTIVITY INFORMATION COURSE DESCRIPTION The 15th Annual Emergency Medicine Symposium: A Practical Update is a cutting-edge course that will provide participants with the latest clinical information to support the delivery of fast and accurate diagnoses and treatment decisions. This one-day symposium will cover current and emerging trends in ED management of major burn injuries, discuss the ED s role in containing the opioid epidemic, and explore the latest insights from experts on surgical versus medical management of appendicitis. Expert faculty will cover a variety of other topics, including best practices when caring for transgender patients, use of chest-pain risk scores, and the value of end tidal CO2 monitoing in emergency department care. This unique symposium is designed to support clinicians with evidence-based recommendations and best practices to improve competency and communication in the ED, including selection and use of pharmacological agents, choice of procedures, and relevant information that allows participants to share, explore and discuss ways to improve the safe, effective and efficient delivery of healthcare in the ED, with the ultimate goal of improving patient outcomes and increasing patient satisfaction. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES Use best practice techniques to provide respectful, medically sound care to transgender patients Apply key learnings to improve outcomes for patients seen in the ED with LVAD complications, and to collaborate more effectively with MCS colleagues Initiate more informed discussions with patients about their options for the management of appendicitis, to improve patient satisfaction Employ end tidal CO2 detection in practice to improve outcomes for patients undergoing procedural sedation and endotracheal intubation Utilize chest-pain risk scores to more quickly and safely discharge patients with low-risk chest pain Review neurologic emergencies that present in the pediatric population, and use the most current diagnostic and treatment recommendations to improve patient outcomes ACCREDITATION STATEMENT Cedars-Sinai Medical Center is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
