Employment Status. n accordance with reference (a), U.S. Naval Mobile Construction Battalion SXTY- 'fwo was deployed to Hue/Phu Bai from December, 1966 to August, 1967. The primary mission of the Battalion was construction in support of the JOth Naval Construction Regiment. 2. Unit Movements. a. The first flight of MCB SXTY-TWO'S Main Body departed CB Center, Gulfport, "Mississippi, on 5 December 1966, and arrived at Camp Campbell, Phu Bai, on 8 December 1966.. i b. On 22 May 1967, Seabee Team 6201, consisting of one officer, (LTJG D.B. HERRMANN,CEC, USNR) and twelve men departed Phu Bai, to return to CB Center, Gulfport, for a period of leave and to commence training on 1July1967. c. On 6 July 1967, MCB SXTY- TWO 1 S Advance Party under LTJG C.G. STELLYE.S departed Phu Bai to return to CB Center, Gulfport, to set up the Battalion's homeport training program. d. On 30 July 1967, the first flight of MCB SXTY- TWO'S Main Body departed Phu Bai for r eturn to CB Center, Gulfport for a period of homeport traininf. The last flight left 8 August 1967. J. Significant Events. a. Phu Bai. On 8 December 1966, MCB SXTY- TWO asswned command of Camp _Campbell, b. n mid-december 1966, the Dong Ha detail under ENS HERRMANN; returned to Phu Bai after turning projects over to MCB Five. c. On 1 January 1967, a convoy of Charlie Company personnel were returning from a br idge repair job south of Phu Bai on National Route 1 and came under enemy fire. Fire was returned and resulted in one KA. (Probable). :1 d. On 20 January 1967, at approximately 014.5, Camp Campbell received six rounds of 82mm mortar fire. This was a portion of the total of 59 rounds taken within the Phu Bai Combat Base. An Alfa Company hut and one Delta Canpany hut sustained direct hits. Casualties sustained as a result of the attack were one KA, one DOW, and seventeen WA. e. On 4 February 1967, a defensive perimeter was established at the Gia le quarry 1:1 ite to provide security for 24 hour/day operation of the i

quarry and crusher. The crusher was moved from the Phu Bai Combat Base to the quarry on 5 February 1967. 'rhis perimeter, set up by MCB SXTY-TWO proved to be an effective toehold from which the Marines later enlarged to be the Gia le Combat Base. While clearing fields of fire, an MRS Scraper hit an anti-personnel mine suffering extensive damage to a wheel and tire. f. On 5 March 1967, the Seabee 25th Birthday and the looth Anniversary of the CEC was celebrated with activities including softball games, boxing smokers with 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines, a concert by the 3rd Marine Division Band, and an evening show by Wilma Reading. A dinner of charcoal broiled steaks and trimmings was served by the Company Commanders and the 250 pound cake served by the Captain highlighted the day' s activities. g. On the morning of 28 April 1967, the Phu Bai Combat Base again came under. mortar attack. No rounds. landed in Camp Campbell proper, although 49 rounds landed along the MCB SXTY-TWO sector, and no personal injuries were sustained. n this attack, MCB SXTY- TWO personnel sounded the first alarm and within ten seconds had a bearing and distance on tl'e muzzle flashes which provided the initial report to CCC for counter mortar fire. h. On 22 May 1967, Seabee Team 6201, consisting of one officer and 12 enlisted men was formed and departed Phu Bai for training at CB Center, Gulfport. i. On 2 July 1967, the Battalion celebrated its first birthday. j. From 29 June to 1 July 1967, the Battalion participated in the "Hue Olympics", an athletic competition. between tr.s. c. Major Problems 1. During the early months of the deployment, the absense of any large construction project reduced the overall effectiveness and efficiency of the Battdion. Throughout the middle of the deployment.work, on m any projects was noticeably delayed due to the shortage of equipment operators arid c,rushed rock, both of which were being used on higher priority, combat.. ess~ntial lines of connnunications (LOC) in Northern Corps. This situation,was co.rrected in the later months of the deployment when some of the Equipment Operators were returned to NMCB SXTY-TWO and crushed rock became available. 2. From the beginning of the deployment until the last month, ready mix concrete proved to be a major problem. Concrete schedules were seldom met and considerable lost time was experienced on projects waiting for concrete. During the las t month of the deployment the concrete situation improved with the arrival of new transit mix trucks at the Camp Haskins (North) batch plant. 3. The long lead time for non-standard construction materials was a problem througho\,.lt the deployment and was correctable pnly by advance ordering of non-standard materials at the time a project was approved for construction or by employing an expeditor out of country..,.::. ~.. -:...-.
