Knight Life Grand Knight Brad Istas 972-618-2639 abcs.istas@verizon.net Chaplain Fr. Bruce Bradley 972-596-5505 BBradley@eseton.org Deputy Grand Knight Jim Goode 972-968-7515 Jim@TheGoodesHome.com Inside this issue: GK Report 1 General News 2-5 Schedule 6-8 Brothers, Grand Knight s Report Brad Istas In reflecting on what to write in the Grand Knight s report for the month of February I am inspired by articles in both the Columbia and Knight Life publications. These publications have a common theme of reporting on how knights serve their families, church communities and the cities and country in which we live. This brought me to think about the ways our council meets this theme of serving and how we are living the principles of Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism. Every month our council members are engaged in activities and projects that are either directly supported by the Knights of Columbus or our parish or community. Whether you are preparing and serving breakfasts, frying fish, praying the rosary, attending First Friday Mass, counting baby banks, ushering at Mass, singing in the choir, attending a bible study, teaching faith formation, voting, and a host of other activities you are living examples of what a Knight of Columbus is supposed to be. The Knights of Columbus uses the words When Knights Act Selflessly great things happen. Our council is alive and well acting and serving selflessly. Thanks to all of you for your continued support of Council 7850. Together our service makes a difference. Council 7850 is in the process of taking nominations for officers for the upcoming fraternal year. Please let us know if you would be willing to serve. I would like to thank all of you for your time and service during the month of February. In my opening paragraph I mentioned several of the activities and projects that Council 7850 is involved in. This does not include any of Continued on page 2 Knight of the Month for February 2016 Bob Kennedy Knight of the month for February 2016 is Bob Kennedy. Bob is an active member of the council and participates in many events each month. You will see him at most breakfast events, Plano Cleanup, dinner events, etc. Bob is our Safe Environment Coordinator and provides us with sign in sheets for many events and, most importantly, handles and gets us through the annual Safe Environment audits with flying colors. He is also one of our Squires counselors and stays busy with those energetic young men. We thank you for all you bring to the table, Bob. Council 7850 www.kofc7850.org Page 1

Grand Knight s Report Cont. from page 1 the behind the scene activities that without them we would not be as successful and busy as we are. As always, I encourage all of you to be an active member of your council. Even if you can t work as a volunteer you can join in and provide moral support to the council. We are working very hard toward keeping the meetings interesting and moving along. Attending a meeting is a great way for you to meet and socialize with other Catholic men. Council meetings are usually on the second Monday of the month starting at 7:30 pm. We meet to pray the rosary at 7:00 pm just prior to the meeting. Come and pray with us. If you haven t been to a meeting in a while come and join us. We would love to see you. Don t forget to visit our web site to see all of the activities our council is involved in. There is something there for everyone. www.kofc7850.org Please let me know if you have any questions or suggestions. Thanks for all you do in supporting our Catholic Faith and each other. God bless you and your families, Brad Istas, Grand Knight Council #7850 BRISK COOLER WEATHER WITH SUNSHINE FOR FEBRUARY PLANO CLEANUP The Knights and Squires worked together on a clear brisk morning with sunshine for our weather for the bi-monthly Plano Cleanup held on Saturday, February 13, 2016. 13 Knights split into two teams for the Plano Roadways with one team working Spring Creek Parkway from Independence to Custer Road and another team working Custer Road from Parker Road ending at Spring Creek Parkway. The Knights of Columbus involvement in the Plano Cleanup is great exercise and an excellent reflection of our commitment to supporting the community. The Knights enthusiasm is a clear indication of Council 7850 support for our city s Live Green in Plano through the Adopt-A- Highway campaign. 13 Brother Knights working the Roadways Saturday morning included: John Carlson Jim Goode Leo Murphy John Healy Ron Harabis Bill Graham Dave Kistner Derek Leonard Paul Szatkowski Tom Juneau Dan Zechmeister Moe LaVerdure Ed Stankunas Thanks to all these participants who helped lighten the workload. Hoping you and your families had a Great Valentine s Day Celebration with your Loved Ones and Families. Dave Kistner Council 7850 www.kofc7850.org Page 2

2016 Seton Mardi Gras Many thanks to John Forsythe for chairing the Knights participation, to Margarita Mills for chairing the Ladies Auxiliary participation, and to Andrew Brisano for coordinating the Squires participation. We know you all recognize that in addition to the chairs it takes all you volunteers to conduct a successful event like this. And, of course, we were just one of the many Seton ministries involved. Each year we fill the Faith Formation Center with food, games, music, and fun activities for the whole family. A few words from the Ladies Auxiliary chair: Congratulations to the 7850 Ladies Auxiliary for winning the prize for the Best Decorated Booth. They received a $25.00 prize and the right to display the trophy at their booth during the event. Their Mardi Gras Committee consisted of Candy Zechmeister, Carol Goode, Tere Halley, and Margarita Mills, Chairman. Margarita says that all the ladies look forward to this event, because everybody gets in the game shopping for the items in the baskets, selling tickets, decorating the baskets, decorating the booth and having fun doing it. Suzanne Victorine and Carol Goode did a beautiful job decorating the baskets. Margarita, Candy, Carol and Tere, with the invaluable help of brother Knights Bruce Mills and Dan Zechmeister, decorated the booth. With money raised during this and other events, the Ladies Auxiliary is able to help a lot of deserving causes. The Auxiliary is already looking forward to the 2017 Mardi Gras! 2016 Fish Fr y #1 This is our first year to host 2 fish fry events. We have talked (or joked) about it for several years but this year Seton really asked us to do it. Both of these take place during Lent and are a fun event for the parishioners. For years they have asked why we only do one. Well, in a few days we ll see how well having two goes over. Another first this year...jim Newberry stepped down as Community Program Director and backed away as Chairman of the Fish Fry. John Carlson picked up the Fish Fry Challenge and with a slightly modified menu and a host of volunteers coordinated a successful first fry. At last count, we served around 425 people in 120 minutes during this first event. It takes about 35 volunteers to host this event and John thanks all who helped in any way. Without your dedication to the parish we wouldn t be able to host an event like this. And, as you know, any profits will go to several charities as we progress through the year. T h a n k you. David a n d Br ia n Ach ieve 3 rd Degree ee Please join us in congratulating two of our members who achieved full knighthood at a Major Degree on Saturday, February 27th. David Rosengrants and Brian Shofran (L-R) were in a group of 44 first degree candidates from around the area who became knights in the 3 rd degree during a moving ceremony at Council #12300, in Wylie. The day started with mass at St. Anthony s, and concluded around 1:00 PM. The group as a whole was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. As full knights, David and Brian learned more about the two principles of Unity and Fraternity while renewing their dedication to our faith, and strengthening their commitment to helping others through acts of charity and service. Attending the degree in support of these two brother knights were Steve Gumm and Dan Zechmeister, plus Bob Wilson as a member of the Color Corp, and Ed Wall who was there to support his brother Bert who is a member of Council #6065 at St. Mark s. When you see our newest 3 rd degree knights at meetings and council activities, be sure to wish them well and give them a much deserved pat on the back. Dan Zechmeister Council 7850 www.kofc7850.org Page 4

Each year at this time Knights and their families are invited to participate in this family-fun event. Reasonably priced (because it s subsidized by your council to make it so), watching this semiprofessional baseball team play is always a blast. Hey, this is where we first saw Elvis Andrus who now plays with the Texas Rangers. See the following flier for more details. Contact Charlie Lugo for tickets (Charlie.Lugo@verizon.net, 972-898-4151). At our last business meeting there were still some tickets available. Knight Out With the Roughriders Newsletter Policy By the 4th Monday of each month refer all articles, pictures, questions, and suggestions to Newsletter Editor Jim Goode (Jim@TheGoodesHome.com). That s only two short weeks after the monthly business meeting. If you attend an event and snap a picture or two (cell phone or camera), please share them with me.
