A C I V I L W A R MEMORIAL SERVICE Deloss M. Haviland (1841-1862) 4th MICHIGAN INFANTRY SATURDAY JUNE 23, 2012 2:00P.M. Wright Cemetery CORNER ROBERTS AND DUTTON ROADS IOSCO TOWNSHIP LIVINGSTON COUNTY, MICHIGAN
When the Confederates shelled Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina on April 12,1861... AMERICA IS AT WAR Four young farmers from Iosco Township, Deloss Haviland, Lewis Haviland, Austin Smith, and Daniel Poyer, are among the first wave of Iosco Township men to answer President Lincoln s call for volunteers to defend the Union. The four men soon number among the troops of the 4th Michigan Infantry. Of the four men, only one, Lewis A. Haviland, survives war. His younger brother, Deloss, was killed in action on June 27, 1862 at the Battle of Gaines Mill. Lewis was at Deloss side when he fell. Lewis, who was wounded during the same battle, grabs his lifeless brother s cap before he is forced to retreat. Deloss body is abandoned on the field of battle as the Union withdraws. Deloss final resting place is unknown. The Veterans Administration recently provided this marker in his memory.
The Marker Will Be Dedicated During the Wright Cemetery Ceremony
