NTERNATIONAL THE UNITED NATIONS FULBRIGHT FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM "Working at the UN gave me the chance to understand all the complexity and difficulty that the operation of an organization of those dimensions and with such a fundamental mission in the global order involves. But it also made me witness the satisfaction and feeling of reward there is when the organization's actions have a practical impact on people's lives throughout the world. It is precisely those kinds of accomplishments what makes the role of international organizations like the UN so important, and also what pushes the need for governments to understand and support it in a greater extent. " - Maurico Rodas, 2003 UN Fulbright Fellow to Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, Mexico City For the past three years, the United Nations and the Institute of International Education (HE) have partnered with the UN Foundation to implement an innovative partnership to develop new sources of UN leadership and build support for the UN, its activities, and its role in the world among key global constituencies. The United Nations Fulbright Fellowship provides Fulbright graduate students with sixmonth fellowships at UN headquarters and UN duty stations following the completion of their Fulbright Grant. This opportunity is focused on international Fulbrighters completing studies in the United States who hail from developing countries currently underrepresented in UN leadership positions. Since 2002, a total of 39 Fulbright students have held fellowships in New York and in duty stations throughout the world. Selected through a competitive process, the students, a balance of men and women, are placed in departments that have proposed projects matching their areas of research and experience. During their fellowships, they receive stipends to cover living expenses. The program begins with an orientation to give participants an overview of the history, structure, and current activities of the United Nations. Following their assignment to specific UN departments, IIE and OHRM continue to keep in touch with fellows regularly to assess their progress. For example, IIE has formed an electronic listserv of program participants and UN mentors, and uses the listserv to foster networking and the exchange of information, experiences, and ideas. OHRM and IIE host informal lunches to gather the fellows on a monthly basis and to introduce them to people who may be able to play a role in their future upon their return to their countries. The program concludes with a student-centred symposium on "Current Challenges Facing the United Nations." Institute of International Education: United Nations Fulbright Fellowship Program
The 2003 UN Fulbright Fellows with UN Foundation Board Members, November 2003 "The UN Fulbright Fellowship at UNIFEMwas an opportunity for me to gain an indepth experience in conducting policy level research. Also, it was an opportunity for me to explore the different approaches used to integrate the political, social, economic and environmental dimensions of gender policies at the regional, national and global level. There are not many Yemenis, especially woman, who have the privilege to work at the UN. I consider myself very fortunate among those few Yemenis to have had this opportunity. The UN Fulbright Fellowship experience as a whole is an unforgettable one. I hope that is program will continue to benefit other Fulbrighters, and thus, countries. " - Jeehan Abdul Ghaffer, 2004 UN Fulbright Fellow to UN Development Fund for Women, New York To date, UN Fulbright Fellows have worked in over 20 different UN divisions and offices in the Secretariat, Programmes and Funds and Regional Commissions in ten different countries. Within the Secretariat, UN Fulbright Fellows have worked in eight different departments from the Department of Peacekeeping to the United Nations Office in Vienna. Four of the Regional Commissions in Bangkok, Beirut, Addis Abba, and Mexico City have hosted seven fellows in their departments, hi addition, 13 fellows have worked in seven of the Funds and Programmes in both New York and overseas. The United Nations Fulbright Fellowship Program hopes to continue to develop future leaders from developing countries and build support for the United Nations. HE and the UN are eager to continue their partnership with the UN Foundation on this exciting program - one that promises to have a unique and effective impact upon the United Nations as it moves into a new era of importance and relevance on the world stage.
