She was the middle child of the three girls, and when she turned 18 she started living on her own. Betty attended a two-year junior college where she focused on office administration. When she was 24, Betty married her husband, who she met through a family she was living with in Grand Junction. Together, they had three children and lived in Salina, Kansas, and finally Fort Collins; where they settled down for 30 years. Betty s husband was in the Service where he was a bomber plane instructor. Betty worked in various office settings including; Kansas State University, the Upper Colorado Commission, and the Atomic Energy Commission. She enjoyed meeting and working with many people. When they weren t working, Betty and her husband had many creative hobbies including crochet, embroidering, and stained glass art. Betty s most prized possessions are a beautiful stained glass lamp and angels, which were created by her husband for her. She enjoyed taking care of her children, and grand children (she has nine), and playing bridge. Betty and her husband also took some special trips together. Two cruises, a European bus tour, and a river boat trip, to name a few. The two were married for over 50 years and had a wonderful life together. Betty lived at The Winslow for eight years before coming to New Mercer Commons. She enjoys exercise, entertainment programs, getting her nails done, and going on walks.
NURSES WEEK Nurse s Day is celebrated annually on May 6th. This day was created to raise awareness of the important role nurses play in society. May 6th is the start of the Nurse s Week celebration which ends on May 12, the birthday of Florence Nightingale. Florence Nightingale is known as the founder of professional nursing and for her pioneering work during the Crimean War. She made many rounds at night checking on patients and thus became known as The Lady with the Lamp. Please join us in celebrating Nurse s Week, and in thanking all of the nurses at New Mercer Commons for their dedication to the profession. Thank you to our nursing staff: Courtney, Dreya, Cheri, Tamara, Jane, Margarette, Carrie, and Lynsey, our Nurse Practitioner NEW MEDICARE CARDS Medicare is issuing new Medicare Cards. What does this mean? Your Medicare number will change. In an effort to protect people s identity Medicare numbers will no longer be a person s social security number. Instead it will be a unique number to you. What do you need to do to get it? Nothing. Medicare will be automatically sending out these cards. It started in April, but it will take some time for people to receive them and for Medicare to get them all out. If you get a call saying you need to give information for your new card, don t give out information. Medicare stated they will not be contacting people. When you get your new card please bring it up to the front desk so we can get a copy of it. Your medical providers will also start asking for it or reminding you to bring to your next appointment. Your old Medicare card can be destroyed when you get your new one. If you would like us to shred it for you, please bring it to the office for shredding.
