COMPETITION PLAYBOOK
OVERVIEW The Maker Games is a rapid prototyping competition open to all UNSW undergraduate students. The competition is based on challenges put forward by industry partners and any student can pitch their idea for a solution. The best ideas would be invited to move from the pitching phase to the prototyping phase. Teams of 4-6 will compete to build the most innovative and attractive technical prototypes. At the Showcase, a judging panel will pick the best overall prototype and the team will win a trip to Silicon Valley. The competition has three main stages: Stage 1: Pitch your idea Stage 2: Form a team to build your prototype Stage 3: Showcase & Judging

WHAT S AFTER REGISTRATION? STAGE-1 : PITCH YOUR IDEA Choose your Challenge Once registered to the online platform, students will have a variety of challenges to choose from. The online platform will provide challenge details, allow students to submit ideas, facilitate public voting on ideas, form teams, track development progress and evaluate ideas according to set criteria. Attend Info-Session & Design Thinking Workshop More information regarding the Maker Games will be shared at the info-session event. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions. The Design Thinking Workshop will introduce a new way of solving problems and help students formulate ideas.
Submit your idea online All ideas need to be submitted to the online platform for voting and comments. The last date for submitting ideas is 24th August 2017. The challenges are designed to be solved by multi-disciplinary teams. The online platform will make it easy for idea owners to recruit team members from a variety of schools and faculties. If you have an existing team that you have worked with in the past, they can register and join your team. Pitch at the Launch Event At the Launch event, all idea owners will make a oneminute pitch to a panel of mentors from the relevant industry organisation, who will select one idea to move forward to the next stage.
STAGE-2: FORM YOUR TEAM - BUILD PROTOTYPE Product Development Workshop Firstly, the successful teams will learn about the full product development life cycle through a free professional workshop presented by Brainmates. This will be followed by a mentoring session, where mentors from the relevant industry partner to help students refine prototypes. Hackathon A three-day-intensive session with the Faculty of Engineering's brand new Maker-in-Residence team, who have years of experience in rapid prototyping. Experts will work alongside teams to provide practical assistance with prototyping. Throughout the competition students will have access to maker space and prototyping facilities on campus. OH&S sessions and supervision will be provided. Our second mentoring session will take place soon after the Hackathon.
STAGE-3 SHOWCASE Showcase Event This will be the grand finale event of the Maker Games, where student teams can showcase and demonstrate their prototypes. Teams will make a three-minute pitch to a panel of expert judges, followed by a Q&A session. The team with the best technical prototype will win an all expenses paid trip to Silicon Valley valued at $25,0000.
JUDGING CRITERIA Winners will be judged based on the following criteria: 20% - Attractiveness 30% - Quality of Innovative thinking 40% - Technical feasibility 10% - Presentation RULES AND REGULATIONS This competition is only open to undergraduate students currently enrolled at the University of New South Wales. At the public launch event, individual students may only pitch ideas based on the challenges available on the online platform. All pitches must be submitted to the online platform before 24th August 2017. Teams must have between 4-6 members. The time allowed to pitch for the Launch event is 1 minute. the The time allowed to pitch for the Showcase event is 3 minutes.
IP MANAGEMENT All intellectual property remains with the individuals. The owner of any IP created jointly is to be negotiated independently from the competition. PRIZE All expenses paid trip to Silicon Valley for one team. This will include flights, accommodation, meals and a tour of the business and start-up community. BUDGET Teams may claim up to $500 for their prototyping budget. This is will be reimbursed on presentation of receipts to the Faculty of Engineering.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs) (1) What happens if a team member leaves after the Launch event? If the team can continue without that team member, there would not be any problem. (2) I want to join a team, I have/have not registered, what do I do? Register as soon as possible. After registering, pick a challenge and pitch at the Launch event. If you have registered after the pitch event, find an idea you d like to work on from the platform and contact the idea owner. (3) I am the idea owner of the selected idea and I need to build my team, what do I do? Other registered participants can see your idea, so either they will approach you or you can find team members by researching and messaging fellow participants on the platform. (4) I m interested to be a part of the Maker Games, but my idea didn t get selected, what do I do? You can join other teams or continue to work on the idea on your own. (5) When is the last day to finalise teams? The 1st September 2017.
