WEST WINDS February 26, 2018 Page 2 Join the Goodwin House Foundation on Tuesday, February 27, at 3:30 p.m. in the Top of the West, for an informative seminar presented by our Partner SunTrust Bank on detecting and avoiding identity theft, banking fraud, email phishing, and other fraudulent scams that threaten you and your loved ones. Avoiding phishing scams and identity theft Please contact Chris Bryant at 703-824-1027 with questions. Speaker: Hassan Tejan-Kamara Refreshments and door prizes! Q & A session will follow UPDATES FROM CHAPLAINCY Lenten Devotions and Readings- During the Lenten season, many supplement their spiritual readings and activities by reading special Lenten devotional books and readings. A number of free sources are available via the Internet and in print through a variety of sources. If you are having difficulties locating something of interest, Chaplain Theresa Brion would be glad to meet with you and assist you in that search. Further, your Chapel of All Saints keeps copies of several spiritual books on the entrance table for people to use for prayers while using the Chapel. To the extent that there is not a service or program in the Chapel, the Chapel is available to all members of the GHBC community 24/7. Spiritual Resources Across the Faiths- If there are particular spiritual books or items that you would find helpful to have in the Chapel, please let Chaplain Theresa know so she can explore the possibilities. We already receive quarterly copies of several daily devotional magazines that are available to residents, first come first served, but if there are other publications that you would find helpful, let her know your suggestions. Compline on Sunday, February 25, at 7:30 p.m. in the Chapel, is cancelled so that many of those who regularly attended can attend the 7:30 p.m. Evensong Service in memory of former resident, Raymond Glover, at St. Paul s Episcopal Church in Alexandria. DO YOU WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT TECHNOLOGY? We are launching a new program to provide education to residents on using technology. This idea came from one of the Shark Tank ideas. We plan to hold weekly classes in the Bistro where we will teach you about technology and offer time to practice one-on-one or in small groups with technology tutors. We are in the process of developing the curriculum for the program, and we need your help! In the near future, we will be putting surveys in your mailboxes, and we would appreciate your responses. If you would like to join our planning team, please contact Ann Lam at Ext. 7213. The deadline for the next issue of West Winds is Tuesday, February 27. Submit all articles by 12 noon via email at westwinds@goodwinhouse.org

COMMUNITY CORNER Believe it or not kale has become a new buzz word in the hipster scene, but what s the big deal about kale anyway a question many of us have been asking. Well, it s a super food that is jam packed with nutrients. Many people become lactose intolerant as they get older and do not know good alternative sources of calcium. Kale is actually an excellent source of calcium, not to mention it has fiber and antioxidants that improve digestion. Most people think of kale as a form of lettuce but it is actually a form of cabbage. There are many varieties of kale just as there are many varieties of grapes. Kale leaves come in purple, bright green, and forest green, which is called black Tuscan kale. The high fiber content will not only make you feel more full, it will help you move things through your system faster. A large kale salad can give you at least half of the daily recommend alliance of fiber, and fiber will help purify your blood. Kale is now being popularized as an iron supplement and is extremely effective in helping the hemoglobin count in the blood. That is probably more than you ever wanted to know about kale. The point is that kale is good for you (as your mother would have said). Now you know why we are so privileged to have it in our presence so often! Dottie Moser, Resident
