Welcome to the Miss Amazing family. Whether you re a Miss Amazing participant or a loved one that s helping facilitate her journey, you re now part of a nationwide network of people that invests in the potential of girls and women with disabilities. Simply put, Miss Amazing events celebrate the abilities of girls and women with disabilities. However, the social impact of Miss Amazing runs so much deeper. We ve consciously chosen the aspects of pageantry that have proven to be the most constructive for our program participants and conducive to social change. As a result, Miss Amazing serves as a platform for girls and women with disabilities to make new friends, develop life skills, and dispel the commonly held myths about their value and potential. Let s get started!

Our Approach NURTURE A SISTERHOOD Offer a chance for women from different walks of life to learn from each other and develop a valuable support system. BUILD LIFE SKILLS Provide opportunities for girls and women with disabilities to test their boundaries and take on new challenges. INCREASE VISIBILITY Provide a public platform for girls and women with disabilities to define themselves on their own terms and dispel stereotypes.

Core Age Divisions Girls and women ages 10-35 participate in all activities offered at Miss Amazing, including icebreaker activities, the one-on-one interview, personal introduction, presentation in evening wear, and optional Talent Showcase. All participants are awarded for their efforts and one participant from each age division is chosen to represent her age group and state as a Miss Amazing Queen at National Miss Amazing. Preteen Ages 10-12 Jr. Teen Ages 13-15 Teen Ages 16-19 Jr. Miss Ages 20-23 Miss Ages 24-27 Sr. Miss Ages 28-35 Rising Stars The Rising Star division is for girls ages 5 to 9 who want an introductory experience to Miss Amazing. Their journey begins later in the afternoon before the Final Show, at which point they will practice their introductions onstage. During the show, each Rising Star will enjoy her moment in the spotlight to share the many things that make her an amazing girl with a bright and promising future. Finally, the Rising Stars will be awarded for their accomplishments with a crown and trophy! Shooting Stars The Shooting Star division offers women ages 36 and older an opportunity for lifelong personal growth and an ever-expanding network of friends. Shooting Stars will be able to participate in all skill areas, but they will not be evaluated by the judges. All Shooting Stars will be awarded for their accomplishments with a crown and trophy.

Skill Areas The required areas of participation at a Miss Amazing event are known as our Skill Areas. We ve carefully structured them to empower the participants to share their abilities and strengthen their communication skills. INTRODUCTION The microphone is yours! During the Final Show, each participant introduces herself to the audience. This skill area offers participants a chance to exercise public speaking skills and to share their strengths and ambitions with members of the community. What do the participants share during the introduction? The participant can share any details about herself! Many choose to share their name, age, and favorite things. (Example: My name is Susan, I am 15 years old, I love children and animals.) What will the participants wear during the introduction? The introduction takes place during the Final show, so the participant will be wearing her favorite evening outfit (pantsuit, dress, formal gown, etc.). Press play for a demonstration of the Introduction! How is the introduction conducted for participants who do not use words to communicate? If the participant does not use words to communicate, she may use a communication device or a representative may accompany her on stage. The representative will speak on the participants behalf. This detail should be indicated on the participant s Medical Information Form. The judges are prepared to get to know and evaluate participants who communicate with or without words. INTERVIEW During this one-on-one conversation with the judges, Miss Amazing participants exercise communication skills that could help them land their dream job or make a new friend. What questions will the judges ask? The judges will ask the participant or her representative questions based on the information provided on her Overview Form. How long is the interview with each judge? The participant will converse with a single judge for ninety seconds. After ninety seconds have passed, she will be brought to the next judge. This process will repeat until the participant has spoken with each judge. What should the participants wear during the interview? Interview attire is determined by your state chapter. Participants may be asked to wear either their Miss Amazing shirt or interview appropriate attire such as a suit, dress, or nice separates. How is the interview conducted for participants who do not use words to communicate? If the participant does not use words to communicate, she may use a communication device or any other tool that she uses to communicate. A representative may also accompany her during the interview. The representative will respond to the questions on the participant s behalf. This detail should be indicated on the participant s Medical Information Form. The judges are prepared to get to know and evaluate participants who communicate with or without words.

PRESENTATION IN EVENING WEAR Confidence can exude from someone s presence, their smile, and in the way they hold themselves. In this skill area, the participants take to the stage in their favorite evening wear attire and show their confidence and self-assurance with body language and non-verbal communication. What should the participants wear during presentation in evening wear? The participant wears her favorite evening wear attire! This could be a cocktail dress, formal gown, or suit. Participants do not have to splurge on or invest in this outfit. The representative is to wear the outfit in which she feels most empowered. Is it a requirement for Right-hand Men to be male? The purpose of the Right-hand Man program is to provide boys and men with disabilities an opportunity to volunteer at the Miss Amazing Pageant. For this reason, females can escort participants in exceptional circumstances only and must be approved by the state director. What support system will be available for the participant? The participant will be escorted on stage by a member of the volunteer Right-hand Man program. Can a participant choose her Right-hand Man? If a participant wishes to be accompanied by a specific gentleman, inform him that he will need to request her when completing his online application. Press play for a demonstration of the Presentation in Evening Wear! TALENT Are participants required to participate in the Talent Showcase? No. The Talent Showcase is optional. What kind of performances are allowed in the Talent Showcase? All safe and family-friendly routines are allowed into the Talent Showcase. We love to see a wide spectrum of amazing talents! How long can talent routines be? Talent routines must be ninety seconds or less. After the participant has performed for ninety seconds, she will be applauded and thanked for her performance. When is the Talent Showcase held? Depending on the schedule of your state program and the amount of participants, the Talent Showcase could be held in conjunction with the Final Show or as a separate show. How are participants awarded for participating in talent? Every performer receives a medal immediately after her performance.

Preparing for Miss Amazing We ve found that the more you know what to expect, the more you ll be able to fully embrace the fun and excitement of Miss Amazing. To begin, review the steps you ll take leading up to the event and mentally prepare for the flow of activities. 1 Apply online at www.missamazing.org/participant-application 3 Your state committee prompts you to fill out required paperwork and provides you with a tentative schedule 2 Once you submit an application, you immediately receive an email confirmation 4 Closer to the event, you receive an updated schedule, packing list, and important reminders Get Comfortable with Skill Areas Review the Skill Areas section of this packet to prepare for Miss Amazing. Since the skills gained from our skill areas translate directly to real life, you can incorporate practice into your everyday routine! For example, you can practice Presentation in Evening Wear when walking through the supermarket or practice answering interview questions when meeting a new person! Prepare for Meals Meals are different in every state. When you receive your state s schedule, it will contain the meal information so you can plan in advance. If a participant needs help with feeding, please make sure that a parent or guardian is present to do this. Volunteers are not permitted to assist with feeding. What to Expect from Your Committee Your committee members are volunteers that work hard to coordinate your state Miss Amazing program throughout the year. Their number one priority is to coordinate a quality program that is enjoyable for everyone involved. If you have any questions along the way, send them to the correct representative and you should receive a response within 72 hours. If you have feedback, please provide it in the survey provided after the event.

At Miss Amazing From the moment you submit your application to the moment the curtain closes on the Final Show, we want you to have a positive and empowering experience. Take a moment to understand what to expect at Miss Amazing so that you can begin the day with confidence! BUDDIES One of our goals while you are at Miss Amazing is to give you every tool we can think of to help you succeed. That s where your Buddy comes in! A Buddy is a volunteer who is completely dedicated to being your Miss Amazing guide. From skills practice to interview to your hair appointment, your Buddy will be there to help you be the most confident you! Depending on the state program, you will meet your Buddy during registration or orientation. Our state programs typically assign one Buddy to one participant. However, the Buddy-to-participant ratio completely depends on volunteer turnout. Buddies are the most dedicated of all Miss Amazing volunteers, usually returning every year. We find most of our Buddies have experience volunteering in their communities and are passionate about being your Miss Amazing guide! If a participant would like to have a specific individual be her Buddy, please have that person submit an application online at www.missamazing.org/ volunteer-application and specify the participant to which he or she would like to be assigned. RIGHT-HAND MEN The objective of the Right-Hand Man program is to give boys and men with and without disabilities the opportunity to take center stage as a volunteer with Miss Amazing. Righthand Men are responsible for accompanying the participants onstage as they present themselves in their evening wear. If the participant would like to be escorted by someone in particular, that person needs to apply online at www.missamazing.org/ volunteer-application. Right-Hand Men attend their own orientation shortly before the final show.

DOWN-TIME Each program aims to use each minute at Miss Amazing to it s fullest. There will be inevitable down-time waiting for interview or between skills practice area. Miss Amazing will try it s best to offer activities like dance parties, crafts, photo booths and more to keep the day rockin! PRACTICE TIME Participants and their Buddies have a chance to practice each skill area before the Final Show. The participants may have time to practice their talent routine before the Talent Show as well. Practice logistics vary by state. Please refer to your event schedule when it is made available. HAIR AND MAKEUP Miss Amazing recruits volunteer hair and makeup stylists to give participants the royal treatment before the Final Show. Each participant receives her own appointment, but this service is by no means required. AWARDS The coronation closes out the Final Show and begins with all participants individually receiving a trophy and Princess crown. After every participant has been recognized for her achievements in the program, the 1st-runners up and Queens are announced. RESPONSIBILITIES OF PARENTS AND GUARDIANS This is your daughter s day to shine! We aim to recruit the best of the best volunteers, starting with our Buddies. Feel free to exchange phone numbers with your daughter s Buddy if you will not be on site but want to check in. However, we ask that a parent or guardian stay on site if either of the following apply: - If the participant requires medication or requires help with feeding or toileting, please be on hand to assist her. Buddies are not permitted to help with these tasks. - If the participant requires help with communication, it may be helpful to the participant to have a parent or guardian on site to ensure her success.

Expectations of Queens Miss Amazing Queens have the opportunity to utilize the Miss Amazing platform for a year to grow as leaders, role models, and philanthropists. Participants in the Preteen, Jr. Teen, Teen, Jr. Miss, Miss, and Sr. Miss divisions are eligible to receive the Queen position for their division. Learn more about the responsibilities of state Queens here! Community Service Miss Amazing is founded on the belief that everyone has something valuable to offer the world. That s why we encourage all Miss Amazing participants to give back to their communities. During the year of their reign, Queens are expected to serve as philanthropists and role models through volunteer service work and advocacy initiatives of their choice. These activities can range from volunteering at a pet shelter, to collecting winter gear for the homeless, to speaking about disability rights. Each Miss Amazing state committee aims to coordinate at least one group activity per month. These appearances are optional and Queens are encouraged to schedule their own activities and appearances independently. National Miss Amazing National Miss Amazing is the largest annual celebration coordinated by Miss Amazing. State queens have the opportunity to step onto a national stage while representing their home states, exemplifying the ideals of Miss Amazing, and making countless new friends who share similar interests. Newly crowned state queens will receive information about the National event immediately after the Final Show. What happens if a state queen cannot attend National Miss Amazing? If a state queen cannot attend, she must notify her state director as soon as possible. The opportunity to attend Nationals is then offered to the runner-up in her age division. The representative attending Nationals will then act as a co-queen alongside the queen that was unable to attend. More than the title, she achieved the goals we set for her, which were to represent herself and her state to the best of her ability, make friends and have fun, - Elsie, mother of a 2016 Miss Amazing Queen What expenses are associated with National Miss Amazing? A $100 registration fee and expenses connected to show tickets, travel and lodging are associated with the event. Please take a look at the next question to understand how Miss Amazing helps off-set these expenses. What fundraising support does Miss Amazing offer? A percentage of proceeds from each state event goes to off-setting the state queens expenses. Each state chapter also coordinates at least one fundraiser to support the entire team. Additionally, Miss Amazing s Sponsor a Queen program allows donors to make use-restricted tax-deductible donations to Miss Amazing, which the organization allocates to the appropriate queen s expenses.
