VOODOO NEWS American Legion Post #4 News Winter 2015 Published Quarterly Issue # 20 From Your Commander Kenneth Miller Happy New Year to all members of Post 4, SAL, Riders, Legion Auxiliary and your families. The Early Bird Dinner was well attended, thank you Sharon and all the volunteers that helped her, a very good Turkey Dinner was enjoyed by all. I would like to thank everyone who has donated money to the Building Fund; we have received some generous donations from members. The donations have been notes and the money has been deposited into the Building Fund account. I would also like to thank the people that are not members of our Post who have donated money for the roof repairs. In the spring both roofs will be repaired, we are expecting a repair cost of between $13,000 and $15,000 dollars for the repairs, so every dollar counts. The Veterans Day ceremony at Post 4 was down in attendance this year, those who attended I thank you for remembering our veterans. The Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 154 provided the refreshments following the ceremonies at the cemetery, Fire Station in Mt Clemens and American Legion Post 4. News from the Post Adjutant/ Membership Chairperson 2015 means a new year, new beginnings, and new members. Our future relies on increased membership. This is also a time we look back. The Vietnam War (Conflict) had its beginning 51 years ago. Some of the veterans still need to be welcomed back. Seek out just one of them and bring him or her as your guest to the Legion. They may now be ready to join. Be a recruiter and sign up a new member. Wear a cap that identifies you as a Legionnaire and someone may approach you. Always have your 2015 membership card and a membership application in your wallet or purse. As of January 1 st, staff will be carding everyone in the lounge as you will be required to have your 2015 membership card in order to be served. If you have not renewed, do it today. Department will be sending out renewal notices in January. If you already have your 2015 membership card, please ignore the notice. Remember: as part of your membership, you receive the MILegionnaire (keep in mind that Post 4 is part of the 7 th District and the 3 rd Zone). Our Mike Parr is currently the 7 th District Commander. I had the privilege of serving as the 3 rd Zone Commander last year, the same year that the 3 rd Zone reinstated the Four Chaplains Interfaith Memorial Service (for which I am not taking credit). Brett Holt, past 3 rd Zone Commander, and several Auxiliary members should receive credit for all of the background and work. For those unaware of what this is, please research the Four Chaplains story online. The original event happened on February 3 rd, 1943. If you missed it last year, you have the opportunity again to experience this event. It will be Sunday, February 8 th at American Legion Post 16 (1701 W. Genesee St.) in Lapeer. You can find more information (including the event time) in the MILegionnaire or online. We need to remember these brave heroes and keep their story alive. I strongly encourage you to attend; it will certainly be worth your time and effort. If you cannot attend, at least look up their story. Coming soon: your chance to make a difference at the Post. Nominations for Post 4 Officers for the year 2015-2016 begins at the General Membership meeting February 23. Nominations and acceptance will be March 23. Elections will be April 27 th from noon until 7:00 P.M. We want a full ballet and some choices. I have held every office except Finance and am willing to talk to you about what each office needs of you. A member in good standing and willing to give their best effort is eligible to run for office. Also a member in good standing is eligible to vote...we have 1,094 paid members, yet we are only at 78.47% renewal. Semper Fi, Adjutant Augie Miele From the Web Coordinator: Please keep sending your e-mail addresses. This has helped cut the cost of our snail mailing of the Voodoo News. The new website is up and available, please visit the site for all information and events happening at the Post. The Website Address is: www.americanlegionpost4mi.com If you have any suggestions for the new site, please e-mail us at: Info@americanlegionpost4mi.com www.mtclemensamericanlegionpost4.com American Legion Riders: I would like to thank everyone that supported me and the Post 4 American Legion Riders for the past two years. I would like to welcome your new Director Bob Schmidt and the rest of the new ALR board. The ALR board has a open position for Secretary If anyone is interested, please contact Bob. For more information on the American Legion Riders, please feel free to contact Bob Schmidt at (586) 322-1389. Past Director Tim Shosey 4
