Achievement Awards Each year, VSCA honors member schools that promote leadership and community service through their school s Student Council activities by awarding an Achievement Award. This year, 24 schools will be recognized at this convention for their achievements during the 2017 2018 school year. To be recognized, schools must apply and submit documentation of completing a variety of activities throughout the school year. The required projects must be assembled in a portfolio and reviewed by the school principal to be considered for an award. All member schools that complete the criteria for this award receive the award. Featured Speakers Dr. Steven M. Constantino was named acting superintendent of public instruction by Governor Terry McAuliffe effective January 1, 2018. His career started as an educator in 1980 in upstate New York, where he served in several school districts as a music teacher, band director, district director of fine arts and as a high school assistant principal. He served as an assistant principal and principal in Prince William County. He served as deputy superintendent in Cobb County Georgia s second largest school district from 2008 2011. From 2011 to 2016, he served as the division superintendent for the Williamsburg-James City County Public Schools. Dr. Constantino s honors include being named Region 2 Superintendent of the Year in 2015 by the Virginia Association of School Superintendents and Prince William County Principal of the Year for 2000. Kyle Willkom has always strived to live an action-packed life. Along with starting his leadership development company, Action Packed Leadership, Kyle wrote two books on leadership, Wake Up Call and The Thinking Dilemma, created the Action Packed Life online leadership course (reaching high school students across the country), and was the first employee of a million-dollar marketing startup. Kyle has also completed six marathons, climbed mountains, and was an all-state basketball player who walked on at Marquette University. Now Kyle travels the country, guitar in hand, delivering inspirational speeches that are funny, interactive, and life-changing. Learning Lab Descriptions Advisor Swap Shop ADVISOR SESSION South Lakes High School Advisor Presenter: Lyn Fiscus This double session is a perfect place for advisors to get great ideas from one another. Share experiences, problem-solve, and create a network! Bring Unity to Your Community Oscar Smith High School Student Presenters: Kimber Foreman, Kaity Wasinger, Elizabeth Kondzella Advisors: Hilary Bayse, Tina Salmon Explore and discuss different ways your SCA can give back to your school and community. Learn about fun and unique service project ideas. Building School Pride, Morale, and Traditions Woodbridge High School Student Presenters: Chelsea Kumah, Joel Diaz, Abby Meyer Advisor: Michael Viola It is the responsibility of SCA advisors and student leaders to increase school pride, enhance the morale in their building, and implement many different school traditions. Yet, have you ever felt as a leader that you are limited, restricted, and unable to fulfill your leadership capacity and do your job? We know this is the case for advisors and students alike. This session will give some tips, advice, and ideas that will not only allow you to better your leadership, but also leave a positive, realistic impact. Can you PHIL the Love Tonight? Doing Good by Doing Good Liberty High School Student Presenters: Summer Markham, April Sage, Tajhmir Gough Advisor: Robin Waldron This session will discuss service projects that help those in need. There will be an example of a service project and discussion on service projects like trick or treating for canned food, nursing home pen pals, and sock the court. Electronic Communication Is Growing Courtland High School Student Presenters: Maria Parent, Reagan Jackson, Christine Bowser Advisors: Amy Thorne, Bobbie Almassy In this session, we will discuss ways to keep SCAs current with electronic communication. Students will create an electronic sign-up and send it to their advisors. Fashion Feud: A Competitive Fashion Show Benton Middle School Student Presenters: Emily Flugrad, Carley Mayers Advisors: Cadence Kelly, Mark Shiring The Fashion Feud is a competitive fashion show that promotes school spirit and community service. Teams comprised of students and teachers walk the runway in a variety of entertaining categories. Participants and audience members collect and donate new or gently used clothes for those in need. This is a unique event that works well for any school. Visit this session to learn more and show us your runway skills in a live demonstration. Sociology of Leadership Woodbridge High School Student Presenter: Miles Desamour Advisor: Kyle Geck You will be able to examine and find your own selfimage. You will determine what defines a good leader and reflect on if you have their attributes within your respective organization. Lastly, you will compare the social dynamics of your school with other schools. Surviving Freshman Year SENIORS ONLY Presenter: Ryan Thomas, 2016 VSCA President Ryan Thomas returns with his first year of college complete. What to Do When You Don t Know What to Do Prince George High School Student Presenters: Courtney West, Emily Whitehead Advisor: Marcia Edmundson This session will focus on strategies and techniques to identify and manage stress in a busy student s life. Participants will engage in role play and other interactive activities. Tips will be useful for students of all ages levels: elementary through high school! VSCA Rules of Procedure The following Rules of Procedure for the Resolutions Session and the Open Forum with the Board of Education were proposed by the VSCA Resolutions Committee and adopted by the VSCA Advisory Committee: Resolutions Session 1. Debate on each resolution is limited to 15 minutes. 2. When wishing to speak, each person must: Sign up to speak a sign-up sheet will be available Friday evening and Saturday until 1:30 p.m. in the VSCA Office. All students wishing to speak must sign the Speaker s List during this time. Be recognized by the Chair. State his/her name and school. Stand and speak from a microphone. 3. No student may speak more than two (2) minutes on a resolution. 4. No more than two (2) students from the same school may speak on the same resolution and the second student wishing to speak on a resolution must go to the end of the line before speaking. 5. All questions and comments must be directed to the Chair. 6. The Chair will alternate microphones. 7. There will be no yielding of time. 8. Only voting delegates will vote. 9. A majority vote is needed to pass both amendments and resolutions. 10. In the event that an amendment is proposed and properly seconded, all speakers waiting to speak should step to the side of the aisle. Delegates wishing to speak to the amendment shall line up to speak, and will be recognized by the Chair, who will alternate microphones. After the amendment is resolved, debate will resume based on the order of the Resolution s Speakers Sheets. Open Forum with the Board of Education 1. Discussion on any particular topic is limited to 10 minutes. 2. Anyone who wishes to speak must sign up in the VSCA Convention Office located on the Founders Inn first level prior to the Forum. Only one student may speak per school. The speaker must be recognized by the Chair, state his/her name and school and stand and speak from a microphone. 3. The Virginia Student Councils Association is administered by the Department of Student Leadership of the Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals The Department of Student Leadership of the Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals promotes leadership learning in student organizations for all K 12 schools throughout the Commonwealth. We are committed to the advancement of leadership training for students and advisors in Virginia. The VSCA Advisory Committee of the Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals provides direction and counsel for the administrative operation of the VSCA. The advisory committee consists of seventeen (17) voting members: three (3) high school officer schools (President, Vice-President, and Secretary), eight (8) high school regional representative schools, three (3) middle level representative schools, and three (3) elementary level representatives schools, all elected annually at the VSCA State Convention by member schools of the VSCA. Representative positions of the VSCA Advisory Committee are held by schools rather than individuals. All representative schools, once elected, are represented on the VSCA Advisory Committee by a student representative and his or her school s SCA Advisor or principal designee. In addition, the VSCA Advisory Committee includes ex-officio nonvoting members, including one VASSP representative who is appointed by the VASSP Board of Directors, the VASSP Executive Director, and the director of the VASSP Department of Student Leadership. The VASSP Executive Director may appoint other ex-officio nonvoting members as necessary.
