Swami Vivekanand Institute of Engineering and Technology does exceedingly well at the 16th ISTE Students National Convention 2013 held at Periyar Manniammi University, Thanjvaur, Tamil Nadu.The team of students under the guidance of Prof. Birinderjit Singh bagged ISTE Best Engineering College Trophy for best performance in the convention. The performance of the participating colleges was analyzed on various parameters such as academic performance of the students, placement records of students, infrastructure and academic industry interface. The winners were declared on the basis of a report prepared by Times Group and India news channel. 2
3 SALIENT FEATURES A Centre of Excellence by IBM has been set up at SVIET in the Department of Information Technology and Computer Science in its first phase of setting up eight CORES by IBM, spread all over the country. It is Fearlessness that brings Heaven even in a moment. WATER CAR ITS POSSIBLE NOW TORQUE 5IVE a group of B. Tech. final year (Mechanical) students of SVIET, Banur have come up with a hybrid car that consumes petrol and water in 50:50 ratio. The mileage of the car which earlier used to be 14km/litre has been increased to 24-28 km/litre. The project is still under research and development and they plan to augment the mileage further.. The system uses HHO popularly known as Brown s gas which is prepared from water with a kind of electrolysis. Stainless steel electrodes suspended in water mixed with electrolyte split it into hydrogen and oxygen. The process once the gas goes to engine is same as in a normal internal combustion engine. - Swami Vivekananda 3

This paper has also been published in the special journal issue of Journal of World Academy of Science, Engineering & Technology (ISSN:2010-376X)(Referred Journal) Prof. D.S.Hira, Prof. D.S.Hira visit to various Universities of USA Director General of SVGOI, was part of the ISTE New Delhi delegation which visited a number of Universities in USA, in order to explore the possibilities of Collaborative teaching and research, student and faculty exchange programs with these Universities. In addition to interactive meetings with the senior faculty of the Universities the delegates visited the laboratories and other infrastructure of the Universities. The Indian delegation visited University of Columbia, University of Georgia, The Catholic University of America, Howard University, The University of Iowa, University of Michigan and Wayne State University. Prof. Sushma International Conference on Pharmacy Awarded travel grant by DST to attend the International Conference on Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences 2013 held at Switzerland, Zurich from July 30-31, 2013. Education is the manifestation of the perfection already in man SEMINARS and CONFERENCES The best way to teach and learn A National Conference on Advances & Innovations was organized by Computer Science & Information Technology department on 5th-6th April 2013. Dr. D. S. Hira graced the event as the honorable Chief Guest. New Courses Introduced - Swami Vivekananda SVIET has started civil engineering wing for the desirous students from this year, as it is one of the important branches of engineering with huge scope. SVGOI has also introduced three courses under Punjabi University, Patiala namely BBA, BCA and B. Com (Prof) A PTU sponsored National Conference on Structuring Innovation through Quality was organized by Mechanical Engineering Department on 19th 20th March 2013. Well Known academician Prof. P.K. Tulsi from NITTTR, Chandigarh was the Chief Guest of the inaugural session. The conference was technically sponsored by Mohali Industries Association and AS-Q Chandigarh Chapter. A seminar on Mobile Computing was organized by Department of Computer Applications and Information Technology on 22nd February 2013. The prominent speaker for the occasion was Dr Sakshi Kaushal, Associate Professor, UIET, Panjab University. A seminar was organized for Engineering students on.net. On 21st February 2013. Mr. Arjun Kapil from Appin Technology Chandigarh was the key note speaker. A seminar on Management of Human Resources in changed Business Environment was organized by MBA department on 4th February 2013, The speaker for the occasion was Dr Sanjay Kaushik, Professor, University Business School, Chandigarh. Interdisciplinary Seminar on the topic" 5S and its application" under ISTE was organized on 14th August 2013. Interdisciplinary Seminar on "Time Management" under ISTE was organized on 28th October 2013 A Seminar on Lean Manufacturing held given by Prof. K.K. Gupta on 23 August 2013. Faculty Development Program and Workshops The faculty members from various departments attended 5 days FDP program on Excellence in Teaching organized by PTU and PITTTR (Punjab Institute of Technical Teachers Training & Research) at PIT Rajpura in the months of March & April 2013. On 1st & 2nd February 2013, CSE department held a workshop on Emerging Technologies-Window Server 2008 & Network Securities in collaboration with Labs & Racks, Chandigarh. The experts included Er Preet Kanwal Singh, CEO Labs & Racks consultant Vibe Tech. Sol. Ltd. & Graduate from Panjab Engineering Collage, Chandigarh and Er. Karan, Graduate from Cambridge University, London. The teachers underwent a 10 day FDP on Innovative Methods Of Technology, organized by Wipro Mission 10x. 5

7 LEADING FROM FRONT Industrial / Educational Visits Students from B Tech ECE visited BSNL, Rajpura on 26 th Mar 2013 and interacted with employees from communication department and learnt about working of exchange. MBA students had the opportunity to visit Gobind Rubber Pvt Ltd, Ludhiana on 7 th Mar 2013 and BBA students visited Gandhari Beverages (Coca Cola plant) on 6 th Mar 2013 to understand the practical issues of supply chain management. B Tech CSE students visited SLR Infotech, Mohali on 7 th Mar 2013 and had a chance to learn the various phases of software development & networking. Students from B Tech IT visited Dibon Software Solutions, Mohali on 19 th Feb 2013 and came across the new & existing technologies in IT sector. Students of Mechanical Engineering department had the opportunity to visit Nangal Dam and Cheema Boilers, Kurali during the last week of Jan 2013 and learnt practical aspects of functioning of turbines & boilers, thermodynamics, fluid machines, automation & safety devices. An industrial Visit to Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd (Swaraj Division) Chhapercherri, Mohali on 23rd August 2013 for MBA 1st & 3rd Sem students. An industrial Visit to Sleepwell Ind. pvt. Ltd, Rajpura on 4th September 2013 for BBA /B.Com(P) 1st Semester. Industrial visits give a flavor of practical knowledge to students about functioning of various departments and their day to day management of productivity, so that they can provide quality products and services to their customers. In this academic year, Industrial Visits were organized in various sectors, few of which are mentioned herein. 10 SVIET IN ACTION Dance Club Official Dance group of SVGOI, Bandits - The Dance Crew is the pride of our institution. This group has secured merits in many national level dance competitions. This dance group is enhancing dance by organizing dance workshops in the campus to bring out the talent of the students. Green Club Sports Club Green Club is an ecofriendly club of SVGOI, which recently participated in the National Level Green Campus Challenge by IIT Bombay, under which the team secured 4th position among 110 colleges throughout India. Robotic Club Basketball Team of SVGOI participated in the Inter-college PTU competition held on 20th & 21th Sept,2013 at RIMT-IET, Mandi Gobindgarh, under which the team secured 4th position. Football Team of SVGOI participated in the Inter-college PTU competition held on 22th & 23th Oct,2013 at GNDEC Ludhiana. 10 Robotech club is an effort by teachers and students of SVIET to enhance effective and practical knowledge of robotics and electronics among students.
