Special Events F A M I L Y E V E N T S BABY BARGAINS SALE Gather up all those gently used clothes, toys, strollers, books, and other baby/toddler necessities and pass them on to someone else and make some money! Rent the space and we take care of the rest. Each space is 12 X 12 and includes one table and chair. If rain, we will contact each participant and give an alternate date. Set up will begin at 6:00 a.m. and a city representative will be present to direct you to your spot. Emails with details will be sent one week prior. Event is open to the public to shop! ArtAround Roswell hopes to enhance our outdoor spaces and enrich lives at the same time. We have a well-balanced and diverse exhibition of sculptures with a variety of styles, types and sizes. A c t i v e Adults ROSWELL ADULT RECREATION CENTER (ARC) The ARC is a 19,500-square-foot facility offering a variety of quality recreational opportunities for citizens ages 50+ as well as adaptive therapeutic programs. The center boasts a billiards room, art room, computer classroom, breakroom, an event ballroom for rentals and special events, and a state-of-the-art fitness center with showers and an aerobic room. To rent the ARC, see page 21. Hours of Operation: Monday Thursday, 7:00 a.m. 8:00 p.m.; Friday, 7:00 a.m. 6:00 p.m.; and Saturday, 7:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m. Location: 830 Grimes Bridge Road in Grimes Bridge Park ADULT BOCCE LEAGUE Competitive play at the newly built bocce courts. The season will run 10 weeks with the top four teams making playoffs. A mangers meeting will be held on 3/1 at 4:00 p.m. Registration is per team. FULTON GOLDEN GAMES For more than 20 years, the Fulton Golden Games has helped active adults stay physically active, socially engaged and competitive, thus improving their quality of life. This May, the cities of Alpharetta, Atlanta, Johns Creek, Milton, Roswell, and Sandy Springs will join forces again to bring this event to Fulton County. Events include opening ceremonies, track-n-field, hiking, running, bowling, and much more. High Beginner: In this class, you will review the basic steps, terminology, proper foot positions, balance, and weight changes you learned in the Beginner level. You will improve your knowledge and learn all-time favorite classics and new line dances. Low Intermediate: At this level, you will learn Low Intermediate all-time favorite classics and new line dances. This course will challenge you to keep your mind, body, and feet moving! Tournament held on April 4, 10:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m. Fees: $14 TAI CHI/QI GONG FOR BEGINNERS This low-impact exercise will improve your balance and coordination. You will learn the traditional Yang Style of Tai Chi. You will also learn proper breathing and relaxation techniques of Qi Gong. A portion of proceeds from this class will be donated to support the National MS Society. Historic House Museums SMITH Plantation OPEN-HEARTH COOKING AND LIVING HISTORY WITH CLARISSA CLIFTON Living history interpreter and open hearth cooking expert, Clarissa Clifton, will demonstrate making traditional southern food in the Cook House. Using an open flame, Clarissa shows the versatility of old cooking methods, trades recipes, and reveals the tricks of the trade. These monthly events can be seen during regularly scheduled tours. March May 2nd & 4th Saturdays of each month, 10:00 a.m. 3:00 p.m. Fees: Free INTERPRETATIVE EXHIBIT BEGINNING IN APRIL A new display in the Slave Cabin will outline the history of slavery in Georgia and the plantation economy that was so dependent upon an enslaved labor force. The exhibit will highlight the duties, lifestyle, and relationships of the people enslaved at the Smith Plantation, and how their experience differed from slaves in other regions. Additional information will include the abolition movement and the fate of the slaves following their emancipation. The exhibit is housed in a building believed to be the oldest on the Smith Plantation complex, predating the 1845 Main House. The Slave Cabin is open during normal operating hours. Admission is Free. COOK HOUSE EXHIBIT REDESIGNED A redesigned exhibit in the cookhouse explores the process of preparing food for the Smith family, illustrated by a variety of artifacts. BADMINTON A sport played by either two opposing players (singles) or two opposing pairs (doubles), who take positions on opposite halves of a rectangular court divided by a net. Players score points by striking a shuttlecock with their racquet so that it passes over the net and lands in their opponents half of the court. Each side may only strike the shuttlecock once before it passes over the net. A rally ends once the shuttlecock has struck the floor. Badminton is played twice a week.
