Job Purpose To support the provision of a professional cost effective, efficient clinical photographic, and multimedia service to NHS Lothian. Organisational Position General Manager (Clinical Services) Head of Service, Medical Photography Senior Clinical Photographer (SCP) x1 PAEP / x1 RIE / x2 SJH Clinical Photographer(s) (this post) / Ophthalmic Photographer Ophthalmic Imaging Technician(s) Medical Photography Assistant *PAEP - Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion, Edinburgh / RIE Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh / SJH St John s Hospital, Livingston. 5. Role of the Department The Medical Photography Service provides a comprehensive Clinical Photography, Graphic Design and Video Service to NHS Lothian staff. Producing clinical imaging and high quality illustrative material primarily in the areas of patient care, medical education and research. These services are currently delivered from six sites: Lauriston Building, Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion, Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, Royal Hospital for Sick Children, St John s Hospital and Western General Hospital. The Service receives over 30,000 requests annually. Clinical specialities include Burns, Dermatology, Maxillofacial Surgery, Ophthalmology, Orthopaedics, Paediatrics, and Plastic Surgery. A fully digital workflow is utilised where clinical images are uploaded onto our Medical Image Manager database. Non-Patient Photography, Graphic Design and Video Recordings are also produced for teaching, research, publication and public relations purposes.

6. Key Result Areas 1. To undertake clinical photography / video of patients requested by healthcare professionals for clinical assessment, records, teaching, publication, research 2. Responsible for undertaking a wide range of ophthalmic photographic duties including colour fundus photography, fundal fluorescein angiography, Slit Lamp and OCT imaging 3. To provide high quality imaging suitable for subsequent diagnostic and clinical requirements 4. Prepare designated rooms for imaging ensuring compliance with service protocols and health and safety legislation 5. Act independently, assess and manage own workload of patients / clients, maintain associated records ensuring standards are maintained and monitored to ensure their continual improvement 6. To provide advice to departmental colleagues and other healthcare professionals to ensure methods, techniques and equipment are appropriate for the tasks required 7. To perform an advisory role to other healthcare professionals in relation to, for example, technical issues and diagnostic imagery, consent, copyright, confidentiality, safe storage of clinical images or technical issues in order to reduce the risk of misuse of clinical images and to avoid possible litigation for NHS Lothian 8. Assisting with the supervision, mentoring, education and training of more junior members of the team to enable them to carry out their tasks in a professional manner 9. Produce visual communication, ensuring that the material is of a professional standard, using specialist hardware and software 10. To undertake video, graphic design, non-clinical photography including PR work on behalf of NHS Lothian 11. Upload images from the main capture systems to Lothian wide database to ensure data is securely stored and backed up 12. Work within local standard operating procedures and service protocols ensuring adherence at all times and contributing to development as and when required 13. Comply with health and safety and infection control policies ensuring any incidents or accidents are reported to the HoS, undertaking any investigations as directed 14. To contribute to the development, monitoring and understanding of new technologies within the profession 15. 7a. Equipment and Machinery The following are examples of equipment which will be used when undertaking the role. Standard and specialised technical cameras/diagnostic ophthalmic imaging systems and lighting equipment. Specialist photographic equipment e.g. 3-D medical imaging photographic systems based upon Digital Surface Photogrammetry. Specialist Ophthalmic equipment including slit lamp, Fundus cameras, Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscope, Ocular Coherence Tomography (OCT). Data projectors, PC, network software and hardware. Other miscellaneous clinical equipment e.g. cheek retractors/dental mirrors, which require sterilisation to prevent cross-infection. Note: New equipment may be introduced as the organisation and technology develops, however training will be provided. 7b. Systems Uses Medical Image Manager (MIM) database and Job Management System (JMS) to upload photographic images and associated patient details. To retrieve images for printing and presentations on behalf of clinicians. Uses Heidelberg/ Haag Streit / Optos / Topcon / Zeiss Ophthalmic imaging systems Uses Adobe CC for photography, graphics and video work TRAK system to access patient information Email to send and gain information eksf for staff development and review DATIX to report safety concerns Intranet to obtain NHS Lothian information Internet to obtain professional, research and other health service related information Responsible for safe use of expensive or highly complex equipment.

8. Assignment and Review of Work Workload is generated by the specific needs of each area including clinicians, nursing staff, and health care professionals. Professional accountability to the Head of Service, Medical Photography. Senior Clinical Photographer (Specialist) will provide supervision, assign and review tasks. The post holder will be required to plan and prioritise workload and use own initiative when required. The post holder will liaise with HoS / Senior Clinical Photographer (Specialist) on a regular basis 9. Decisions and Judgements The postholder will be required to assess difficult clinical situations generating solutions however will determine when to refer more complex cases to a more senior member of the team. Requirement to analyze the condition being photographed and make decision on the most appropriate imaging procedure for the subject being photographed, taking into consideration the well being of the patient. Use analytical and judgmental skills in photography, in particular with regard to the digital image workflow ensuring colour management protocols are achieved. Monitors workload of self and other team members, modifying schedules at short notice to allow for unexpected off-site requests and staff absence 10. Most Challenging / Difficult Parts of the Job The requirement to work across many NHS Lothian hospital sites as the service demands. Frequent requirement to working within a darkened environment (Ophthalmology). Frequent requirement to working on busy clinics with competing priorities Frequent requirement for adopting awkward positions for long periods, for example, whilst operating ophthalmic imaging or video equipment. Continuing to develop skills and knowledge in all facets of the post.

11. Communications and Relationships Head of Service Overall accountability. To influence their decisions on clinical/ophthalmic photography and visual communication material. Where necessary, communicate with other relevant departments that may include Estates, Supplies, Human Resources, Infection Control, Pharmacy, Health and Safety and Risk Management regarding issues in clinical research area and personal development. Patients Communicate complex, sensitive information requiring empathy and reassurance and overcoming barriers to understanding. Receive information concerning patient history, sensitive issues, patients with special needs, accommodates patients views and preferences with regard to cultural differences. To undertake clinical photography and take responsibility for the patient during photographic procedures. Trainee / Students Supervision / mentoring. Assisting with the education and training to enable them to carry out their tasks in a professional manner. External Communications; Where relevant, participate in external professional meetings/conferences related to the profession. 12. Physical, Mental, Emotional and Environmental Demands of the Job Physical Demands/Effort: Daily requirement to sit for substantially long periods working at imaging equipment and computers. Frequent requirement to adopt awkward postures when photographing patients to obtain correct anatomical viewpoints e.g. stretching around ophthalmic equipment to lift eyelids. Physical support is often required for elderly or frail patients, and reconfiguration of equipment to support their needs.

Work in operating theatres, where imaging must be undertaken with speed, dexterity and accuracy to ensure treatment of patient is not delayed. Occasional requirement to move supplies / equipment within the service, or on behalf of clients (up to 10 kilos). Manual handling must be risk assessed. Mental Effort Daily requirement for long periods of concentration when undertaking imaging/visual tasks and downloading images onto computer (Specialised software used on a daily basis) which requires a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail. Requirement to respond to unpredictable and unplanned workloads with a higher priority (including patient photography requests). Multi-tasking being able to complete several jobs running simultaneously. Emotional Effort Working on a daily basis, with patients who are concerned about their health and well-being e.g. losing their vision. Regular exposure to distressing or emotional circumstances (photography of terminally ill or dead children and adults). Non-accidental injuries / Abuse / Burns and Trauma. Occasionally deals with patients with learning disabilities, poor vision, hard of hearing, sometimes confused. Environmental Demands: Daily exposure to odours and body fluids when photographing patients (e.g. vomiting and possible collapse during intra-venous procedures).
