In 2011, Volunteer MBC receved a grant from the Cty of Brampton n the amount of $25,000 n 2011 to: promote volunteersm across all communty sectors; connect volunteers and companes nterested n employee-supported programs wth volunteer opportuntes; strengthen agency capacty to support volunteers; promote partnershps to ncrease the communty contrbutons of volunteers. Snce movng to Brampton, 7700 Hurontaro Street, partcpaton has ncreased by 90%. Volunteer MBC s requestng a muncpal grant n the amount of $30,000 n 2012 to be used to support marketng, communcaton and other non-core operatng expendtures for the Centre. The Cty of Brampton wll formally partcpate wth the Volunteer MBC, as approved by Councl n 2011, through the assgnment of a staff member to the Board of Drectors. RECOMMENDATIONS 1. That the report from Donna-Lynn Rosa, Drector, Recreaton, dated August 2, 2012 to the Commttee of Councl Meetng of September 5, 2012, re: Volunteer MBC - Mssssauga Brampton Caledon (Fle # C16.BR ), be receved; and 2. That staff be authorzed to provde fundng assstance to a maxmum value of $30,000 from the Cty Wde Intatves Account n 2012 for the Volunteer Brampton Centre, an arm of Volunteer MBC, to support the contnued marketng, communcaton and other noncore operatng expendtures for the Centre; and
3. That the Mayor and Cty Clerk be authorzed to enter nto an agreement to provde the support descrbed n recommendaton #2 above, n consderaton of contnued sponsorshp recognton for the Cty of Brampton from Volunteer MBC, wth content satsfactory to the Commssoner of Communty Servces, and n a form satsfactory to the Cty Solctor; and 4. That Councl authorzes the Commssoner of Communty Servces to appont a staff member wth subject matter expertse to partcpate on the Volunteer MBC Board of Drectors. BACKGROUND Volunteersm s an excellent opportunty for the people across Brampton, of all ages, to work together wth the goal of strengthenng ther communty and helpng mantan Brampton as a safe and welcomng place to lve. Councl resoluton C164-2011 passed on August 10, 2011, had the followng recommendatons: 1. That the report from D. Doan, Manager, Program Support, Communty Servces, dated June 30, 2011, to the Councl Meetng of August 10, 2011, re: Volunteer MBC - Mssssauga Brampton Caledon (Fle C16.BR), be receved; and 2. That a muncpal grant of $25,000 n 2011 be approved toward the Volunteer Brampton Centre, an arm of Volunteer MBC, funded from the approved Cty Wde Intatves Account n the 2011 Current Budget; and 3. That the Mayor and Clerk be authorzed to enter nto the necessary Agreement(s) whch ncludes the prncples outlned n the subject report and general terms and condtons acceptable to the Commssoner of Communty Servces and n a form acceptable to the Cty Solctor; and, 4. That the Commssoner of Communty Servces be authorzed to appont a member of staff wth subject matter expertse to partcpate on the Volunteer MBC Board of Drectors CURRENT SITUATION Volunteersm s a crtcal component of helpng people feel connected to a communty. It also helps to reduce solaton among older adults, youth and newcomers. Volunteersm provdes an opportunty for ndvduals to partcpate n ntatves that are meanngful and result n healthy actve lfestyles.
JV3 Snce movng to Brampton, 7700 Hurontaro Street, partcpaton has ncreased by 90%. Increased awareness through meda; artcles n the Brampton Guardan and Snap and several appearances on Rogers TV\o hghlght the youth and older adult programs. Outreach ncreased to 22,000 people resultng n 12,500 referrals, an ncrease of 21%. The Ontaro Youth Volunteer Challenge saw an ncrease from 280 students n 2009 to 3,610 n 2012, completng close to 20,000 hours n the communty. The largest student partcpaton n the Regon of Peel agan came from Brampton's St. Augustne Catholc School. Volunteer MBC managed the Mnstry of Ctzenshp and Immgraton campagn to engage 25,000 student volunteers. The result was 28,000 hgh school students took part contrbutng an outstandng 124,000 volunteer hours, equal to eght-and-a-half years of work durng the 3-week campagn. Ths was an 87.4% ncrease of youth volunteer partcpants from the prevous year. In total, 5,183 students volunteered and contrbuted 24,426 hours for 71 Peel events n 2012. An exceptonal 3,610 of these students were from Brampton! Youth Engaged - Schools Youth Engaged - Caledon 3% Mssssauga Organzatons 15% Caledon 3% Mssssauga Brampton Brampton 42% 82% 55% /V Volunteer MBC reached out to over 4,000 students n Brampton n 2012 compared to 1,500 last year. Volunteer MBC also presented to the Brampton Sport Allance (BSA) and has plans to present to the Senors' Councl. Recently, Volunteer MBC launched an outreach to older adults called the RSVP (retred senors volunteer program). Newsletters are dstrbuted to approxmately 9,000 volunteers n ther Access database, an ncrease from 4,000 last year.
J2>-4 Approxmately 6,300 unque vstors each month vst the webste. The outreach to engage volunteers for the Ontaro 55+ Summer Games was very extensve, resultng n many youth volunteers for the games. FUNDING REQUESTS OF THE CITY OF BRAMPTON For 2012, Volunteer MBC requests $30,000 to support the shft of the number of referrals n Brampton attrbuted partally to the easy access and ablty to accommodate walk-n clents and to facltate more workshops n Brampton. Accordng to Stats Canada, a staggerng 46% of the populaton does not volunteer because they have never been asked. The ncreased funds would be used to reach out to more potental volunteers n Brampton, ask them to get nvolved n ther communty and show them how. For 2012 and the past number of years, Volunteer MBC has receved $35,000 from the Cty of Mssssauga and for the past two years, they have receved $4,000 from the Town of Caledon. FINANCIAL COMMENTS The Cty Wde Communty Events Account (#201109.001.0191.0001) was establshed to support sportng groups, communty events and/or hertage, arts and culture on a request bass. Of the $291,000 annual budget, there s currently $65,000 uncommtted for the remander of 2012. Therefore, suffcent fundng s avalable for ths ntatve, should t be deemed a prorty. SUMMARY Volunteer MBC s commtted to creatng a volunteer base that s reflectve of the communty n whch servces are delvered for the: > Volunteer > Non-proft/chartable agency > Communty at large The Peel Communty Informaton Database ndcates that the Cty of Brampton has over 500 non-proft / chartable agences wth many cty afflated groups. The majorty rely heavly on the assstance of volunteers. In fact, wthout volunteers, many would have to close ther doors.
J%-5 CONCLUSION Ths report recommends that Cty Councl supports the Volunteer MBC organzaton n 2012 wth a muncpal grant of $30,000 drected to support marketng, communcaton and other non-core operatng expendtures for the Centre.
