LIBRARIANS URGED TO STAY UNITED AGAINST FUTURE CHALLENGES The effort to enhance the institution of library in Brunei Darussalam continued yesterday at the Lambak Kanan Library with the launch of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) Global Vision workshop. The enthusiasm of the workshop could be seen in the diversity of participation by various sectors that included the Brunei Darussalam Library Association, institutions from vocational technical education, academic libraries and other bibliotheca organisations. Organised by the Brunei Darussalam Library Association, the workshop was launched by the guest of honour, Acting Deputy Director of Language and Literature Bureau (DBP), Hajah Sariani binti Haji Ishak. In her speech, she lauded the effort of the Brunei Darussalam Library Association in making the workshop possible, and transcended the voice of local librarians to the international level in line with the IFLA Global Vision. She added that it is vital for librarians to stay united against future challenges, especially in the context of globalisation and to generate a society that is knowledgeable and informative. She urged librarians in the younger generation to join the Brunei Darussalam Library Association to further strengthen it, to elevate the level of institution of the library locally, utilise the technological connectivity and collaboration as well as to increase the level of professionalism among local librarians according to the standards at the Asean level. The President of the Brunei Darussalam Library Association, Nellie Dato Paduka Haji Sunny in her welcoming address, highlighted the objectives of the IFLA, launched earlier this year globally and participated by 140 countries to establish a connected and unified library field to face the future challenges that can impact the institution of the library. She explained that the workshop can help form the global vision in line with the objectives of the IFLA. Well-informed and knowledgeable librarians can contribute to a society that is prosperous, she added. She said the Brunei Darussalam Library Association hoped that the DBP can generate more opportunities to the community of librarians to share ideas and information for the future. The two-day workshop was participated by 31 people from various institutions. The IFLA is the leading international body representing the interests of library and information services and their users. It is the global voice of the library and information profession.
