Request for Applications (RFA) Actively promotes an area of science. Generally only one receipt date. Standard plus special review criteria. Funds committed ( set-aside ). 2

Must I contact NIH before applying? Yes under certain circumstances: Applications with budgets >$500,000 (direct cost) for any single year. An NIH institute or center (IC) must agree to accept the application. Applicant s request must be made 6 weeks before receipt date. Letter of Intent. Contact with program staff is always highly recommended. 9

Awaiting Receipt of Application (ARA) An ARA form is used to authorize the NIH Center for Scientific Review (CSR) to log in an application for assignment to an IC when the application involves: Budget > or = $500,000 direct cost in any 1 year; High NCI Programmatic Interest; Late Receipt (only when NCI-managed review); and/or NCI-managed review. 10

Pre-Submission Tips Know your ICs and how they work. Study the funding opportunities. Know and contact your Program Director(s). Be familiar with peer review process. Communicate with Scientific Review Officer(s), whether at CSR (http://cms.csr.nih.gov/ ) or NCI or another IC. Assess the competition through Research Portfolio Online Reporting Tool (RePORT) (http://report.nih.gov).

Referral of Grant Applications to the NCI CSR Referral Officers refer (assign) grant applications to NIH Institutes and Centers (ICs) through use of the PHS Referral Guidelines and FOAs. NCI Referral Officers use the PHS Referral Guidelines and communicate with Referral Officers at other ICs to ensure that mission-relevant applications are assigned to the NCI. 23

Referral of Grant Applications within the NCI NCI Referral Officers use internal guidelines to refer grant applications appropriately to the 51 program (extramural research funding) areas at the NCI. 24
