Job Title: Clinical Research Fellow in Dermatology/Skin Scarring Grade: Clinical Job reference: MBP01635 Department: Molecular and Cell Biology Post Responsible To: Principal Investigator Job Purpose: You will be involved in investigating a treatment for scar prevention/reduction in healthy human volunteers and/or laboratory work depending on progress. All work will sought to be published in peer-reviewed journals. You will have the opportunity to undertake work contributing to a higher degree (MD or PhD). Principal Accountabilities: Research You will participate in a clinical research study in the laboratory of Professor Pullar to study the underpinning mechanisms that play a role in skin scarring and fibrosis. % Time 75 Duties will include: Prepare ethics applications Prepare grant applications Recruit healthy volunteers in order to recruit to the study Take informed consent from these volunteers Assessment of patient inclusion/ exclusion criteria Take a medical history and determine Fitzpatrick skin type Perform a medical examination and take blood and urine samples Make 2 cm linear incisions on the inner aspect of each upper arm Treat the incisions with the study drug gel and close with interrupted sutures Photograph the wound and dress it appropriately Take blood samples for PK analysis Record adverse events Assess local tolerability and redose/rephotograph the sites to day 14, then each week to day 28 and monthly thereafter Assess scarring from day 21, day 28 and monthly, thereafter using a range of probes and scar score scales Maintain subject database, liaise with the Leicester Clinical Trials Unit and produce high quality data suitable for publication Data analysis Cell biology and physiology laboratory work depending on progress Write scientific papers, for publication in peer-reviewed journals Version Number: 1 Page 1 of 5 Date of Issue: 12/12/2014

Clinical duties You will be given the opportunity to act up as a dermatology StR. In addition you will be offered a post-graduate training session comprising a weekly ward round, skin cancer MDT, dermatopathology meeting journal club and combined clinic and will have time available for clinical audit linking into the on-going departmental audit programme of CASE approved projects. No on call work will be required. Clinical duties will be negotiated according to level of expertise and interest of the candidate. Dermatological surgery training and service sessions will be made available if required Teaching 20 5 You will also assist in training undergraduates at the University of Leicester Medical School, including the popular and heavily oversubscribed Leicester Medical School Special Study Modules in dermatology and skin cancer. Resources Managed: You will work on high level innovative research projects of great value to the University in terms of financial value, publication in high-impact journals and impact. Internal and External Relationships: The ability to work well in a multidisciplinary team is essential to this post as the post requires frequent and close collaboration with the following: Internal: Members of University staff, including those in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology The UHL staff including the Dermatology clinical research team, medical and nursing staff, administrative and clerical staff UHL Clinical Research Unit run by Mrs S Batham The Leicester Clinical Trials Unit External: Volunteers attending the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust (including students and staff from the University of Leicester) Members of other Universities/Trusts including collaborative partners NHS patients Planning and Organising: Responsible for directing and managing own work-load to meet the Department s long and short-term objectives and deadlines imposed. Ensure timely analyses for study reports.
