West Bountiful City Police Department The West Bountiful Police Department has extended the application process for the position of full time police officer to August 25, 2017. Under the direction of the Chief of Police, the person in this position performs duties that lead to the preservation of public peace, enforcement of the law, protection of life and property, and building a positive relationship with the community. We place a high value on providing a quality service to those we serve. West Bountiful is a small police department consisting of 10 full time police officers. The 5500 permanent residents enjoy a quiet, rural, equestrian life style. The City benefits from a vibrant commercial district along 500 West between 400 North and 500 South, with a variety of goods and services from restaurants and delis to home improvement and savings club businesses. OPEN DATE: CLOSE DATE: EXTENDED Friday, August 25, 2017 @ 3:00 P.M. I. Position Title: Police Officer / Patrol Division Department: Police II. Summary Statement of Overall Purpose/Goal of Position: Under the supervision and direction of sergeants, Assistant Chief and the Chief of Police, the patrol officer is responsible for all general uniform police operations. Those operations include the following but are not limited to: patrolling West Bountiful City to interdict any criminal activity, render aid, arrest or cite when appropriate, and protect and promote the public peace. The police officer will be the initial investigator in allegations of criminal activity and will be responsible for the timely and thorough initial investigation of the incident. The police officer will be expected to provide a courteous, professional, and competent law enforcement product to the community. Working rotating shifts, day, afternoon and graveyard will be required throughout your career. Working overtime is common and often times required. III. Essential Duties: Patrols the City on foot, bicycle and/or in a radio-equipped patrol car; performs complex investigation, renders service, enforces traffic and criminal laws, and generally provides for the safety of the public; analyzes and interprets legal codes and criminal evidence; prepares written reports and memoranda summarizing information; checks businesses/residences, discovering/preventing the commission of crimes. Enforces all applicable city, state, and federal laws and ordinances by apprehending, citing and arresting violators as appropriate; investigates criminal activity, gathers evidence, interviews victims, witnesses and suspects and takes appropriate action to solve cases and to bring suspects before proper judicial process; investigates traffic accidents, reconstructs accident scenes; documents and reconstructs crime scenes; enforces traffic and parking violations; directs traffic and assists motorists as needed. Performs traffic enforcement while patrolling to insure the safety of the city streets; operates police vehicle and other department equipment in a manner to maximize life span and provide the utmost safety for the officer and the public; maintains visible presence to deter and prevent crime. Responds to calls for service and renders aid to distressed citizens by maintaining the peace, supplying information, and aiding in assisting the citizens as applicable; administers first responder aid. Responds to animal control calls; assesses circumstances and determines appropriate course of action; initiates contact with Animal Control services as needed. Completes detailed and accurate reports of daily activities, criminal cases, arrests traffic accidents and other cases as appropriate; presents evidence and testimony in court and other hearings as required.

Performs foot patrol in the business areas to acquaint themselves with the business community and to make themselves more readily available to the citizens; checks for building security and illegal activity. Performs ongoing public relations to enhance the image of the department within the community; as assigned, represents the department by speaking at public meetings and schools to educate and inform citizens; presents a professional image in both appearance and demeanor. Serves warrants, processes, notices, summons and subpoenas. Testifies in court regarding policing duties. Performs related duties as required. Education: Must possess a high school diploma or GED. A degree from an accredited college is preferred. Certificate & License: The candidate must be Utah POST LEO certified or certifiable by the date hired. Candidate must possess a valid Utah Driver License. Knowledge of law enforcement principles, methods and techniques; legal and political environment associated with police work and law enforcement; federal, state, county and city ordinances; criminal investigative procedures and practices; legal liabilities associated with arrest and law enforcement; police tactics, negotiations, resources, command structure and use of force; court room procedures and laws of evidence, interpersonal communication skills and public relations; local geography, road systems, and boundaries; standard first-aid administration; English, grammar and technical writing skills. Possess some knowledge of the principles of psychology and sociology. Skill in the art of diplomacy and cooperative problem solving; evaluation of tactical and operational requirements of law enforcement situations; the proper use and care of firearms and familiar with the operation of other special police equipment; the management of sensitive law enforcement issues and interdepartmental conflicts; Arrest Control Techniques; the operation of computer technologies, police car/evo, police radio, handgun and other weapons, impact tools and lethal munitions. Ability to provide services in cooperation with the community in a manner consistent with the standards of the West Bountiful Police Department and the City of West Bountiful; learn and perform department self-defense and control techniques and the use and control of firearms; interact and work with others appropriately, respectfully, and effectively in a work place and community of diverse cultures, ages, genders, and socioeconomic backgrounds; exercise sound judgment in evaluating and making decisions in emergency situations; assure compliance with and follow safety practices and procedures common to law enforcement work; communicate effectively verbally and in writing; establish and maintain effective working relationships with elected and appointed officials, other law enforcement agencies, service and community organization, private businesses and the public; maintain strict confidentiality related to sensitive administrative information.

Working Conditions: Tasks require a variety of physical activities generally involving minor muscular strain such as walking, running, and standing, stooping, sitting and reaching. Talking, hearing and seeing required to perform daily functions. Mental application utilizes memory for details, emotional stability and discriminating thinking and creative problem solving. Must stand ready to engage in life and death decision-making. Daily travel required in course of performing portions of job functions. Moderately heavy physical activity. Difficult working positions, including standing, walking, or sitting uncomfortably for extended periods. Exposure to elements such as heat, cold, dampness, fumes, noise, dust, or grease. Risk of bodily injury is moderate under normal conditions. Intermittent exposure to infectious disease, disturbed individuals, emotionally unbalanced individuals, etc. Exposure to stressful situations is of considerable magnitude as a result of human behavior. The candidate will also have an extensive background check conducted by investigators of the West Bountiful Police Department which would include criminal history and character.

Salary Range: $18.83 per hour Depending on qualifications and experience, West Bountiful will increase the starting wage of a candidate, giving up to four years of service credit at a rate of 2% increase per year.
