President s Corner: In the Spirit of Giving I can hardly believe that we are more than halfway through the fall semester and that my time with as your Interim President will soon be coming to an end. The PCCD Chancellor s Office and the Board of Trustees will soon be announcing their decision regarding a new CoA President. Whatever the decision, I have no doubt that under Chancellor Laguerre s capable leadership there will be a smooth transition. The result of the November election, sadly, has created uncertainty and fear for many in our community. As we go forward towards the holidays and a new spring semester, it is my hope that our CoA community continues to embrace a spirit of giving. Not just in the giving of physical gifts, although there are many in need and we have opportunity to help in this regard too, but also in the giving of ourselves in doing what we do best here at the College: ensuring a safe and supportive learning environment for all of our students. I urge you to stay vigilant in this regard so that students here may continue to achieve their highest goals. Also in the spirit of giving, our Latinos Unidos Students Club is sponsoring their annual Fiestas Navideñas / Latino Holiday Drive and our EOPS/Care Department is coordinating an Adopt A Family Project for our students who also are parents. More information about participating in CoA giving opportunities this holiday season are included below. Page 1!

On another note, the Accreditation Team site visit went very well and the College will receive official notification from ACCJC in January 2017. The work that was done in preparation for the visit was commendable. I want to thank all who participated and especially the CoA Accreditation Committee for their leadership and good work, including Tim Karas, Vice President of Instruction, Accreditation Liaison Officer; Myron Jordan, Dean of Academic Pathways and Student Success; Rochelle Olive, Academic Senate President; Lashawn Brumfield, Classified Council President; Shuntel Owens Rogers, Classified Representative, and Sierra Carrabino ASCOA Representative. College of Alameda is a remarkable place. It is has been a great pleasure serving with you this semester. I wish all of you the best in your future endeavors. Sincerely Dr. Frances L. White, Interim President, College of Alameda CoA Latinos Unidos Student Club Holiday Gift Drive College of Alameda Latinos Unidos Students Club is sponsoring the annual Fiestas Navideñas / Latino Holiday Drive on December 5, 2016, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., in the F-building Pit. Students will be placing boxes around the CoA Campus in conjunction with Toys for Tots giving to underprivileged children and families. Please help and support them. Submitted by R. Ramos, CoA Automotive Technology Instructor and Latinos Unidos Student ClubAdviser EOPS/Care Adopt a Family for the Holiday Season The EOPS/Care Department at College of Alameda is coordinating an Adopt A Family Project for the amazing student parents in our program! Last year s Adopt A Family was a HUGE success! COA departments and individuals generously gave toys, gift cards, family games, and other goodies to students and their families. Are you and/or your departments interested in participating? Page 2!

If you are interested, please send an email including your name/department to Monetta Gilbert (mgilbert@peralta.edu) by Friday, December 2, 2016, at 5:00 p.m. Once we match all participants with student parents, we will send you the student s name, their child/children s names and ages, and suggestions of what they need this holiday season. We will even wrap the presents for you (unless you want to wrap them yourself, then by all means do!). If you have questions, please contact me or Monetta Gilbert at EOPS/Care/CalWORKs in the Welcome Center. Thank you! Submitted by Marissa Nakano, M.S., EOPS/Care/CalWORKs Counselor, Phi Theta Kappa Co-Advisor CSUEB Transitioning to Semester System in Fall 2018 On November 4, 2016, Vice-President Instruction (VPI) Timothy Karas represented CoA at a meeting with California State University East Bay (CSUEB) President Dr. Leroy Morishita and regional community college executives. VPI Karas, along with Berkeley Community College President Rowena M. Tomaneng, interim Merritt President Marie- Elaine Burns, and PCCD Vice Chancellor Luis G. Pedraja, discussed strategies to strengthen partnerships and student pathways between CSUEB and community colleges. As part of the overall strategy, CSUEB will transition to the semester system from the quarter system in Fall Semester 2018. This alignment will spark improved articulation and planning between our institutions. Submitted by Timothy Karas, Vice President of Instruction Take a Look at the New College of Alameda Spring 2017 Class Listings A new publication has been produced by VPSS Dr. Tina Vasconcellos and VPI Tim Karas to provide our students greater access to CoA class listings. The College of Alameda Spring 2017 Class Listings will be available on campus next week and is available now online. You may access the Spring 2017 class schedule here. Page 3!
