CHOOSING COURSES FOR YOUR HSC STUDIES? WANT TO GAIN VALUABLE WORKRELATED SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE WHILE YOU STUDY YOUR HSC AND GET A TAFE QUALIFICATION AT THE SAME TIME? THEN TVET IS THE ANSWER FOR YOU! 3 T VET AT TUTE I T S N I A RI V E RI N TAFE delivered Vocational Education and Training, or TVET, allows you to study units from TAFE courses as part of your HSC and gain valuable work-related skills, knowledge, and real-life eperience. Year 11 and 12 TVET students can get credit from the Board of Studies for units studied at TAFE, in addition to receiving a TAFE NSW academic transcript for a Certificate I, Certificate II or a Statement of Attainment. All TVET courses will provide you with credit towards an Australian Qualification Framework (AQF) qualification. The Certificate I, Certificate II or Statement of Attainment you complete will lead you directly into higher level TAFE NSW courses, providing an alternative pathway to university studies. If you choose to study a TVET Industry Curriculum Framework (ICF) course, you can also do the Board of Studies HSC eamination which counts towards your Australian Tertiary Admission Rank your ATAR score. WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF A TVET COURSE? TVET courses are based on mainstream courses and have been developed or endorsed by the Board of Studies Broader choice of study options so you can study in an area that interests you Courses are available for any ability level Units studied count towards the total units required for your HSC Many courses count towards your ATAR Gain credit towards a nationally recognised AQF qualification Courses can provide pathways to university study and higher education If you are from a government high school, TVET is FREE (nongovernment high school prices are negotiated with the school) Our teachers are qualified, have industry eperience, and are highly skilled and dedicated to helping you achieve your goals to higher education or career choice Access to our well-equipped workshops, modern equipment and facilities Gain employability skills and be job ready put yourself ahead of your peers WHAT TVET COURSES CAN I STUDY? There s a wide range of TVET courses offered across a variety of industry areas. You can choose to study an Industry Curriculum Framework (ICF) course or a Board Endorsed Course (Non-framework course). All TVET courses count towards your HSC, but not all count towards your ATAR. An ICF course (framework) has been developed by the Board of Studies and are based on the training package qualifications. These courses have specific HSC rules and requirements which must be met including mandatory work placement. They can be used to contribute towards your ATAR and include studying in the areas of Automotive, Business/Financial Services, Electrotechnology, Hospitality, Human Services, Information Technology, Engineering, Retail and Agriculture. A Board Endorsed Course (nonframework) refers to any course which has been endorsed for the Higher School Certificate by the NSW Board of Studies and caters to areas of special interest. You may be interested in Animal Studies, Aviation, Beauty Therapy, Hairdressing, Community Services, Children s Services, Indigenous Health Care, Landscaping, Marketing, Plumbing or Sport and Recreation/Sport Coaching or Dance. HOW AND WHEN DO I APPLY? To apply, you need to complete an Epression of Interest to Undertake a TVET Course form. Once you ve filled in this form, there s a section to be completed by your school, and also by your parent/caregiver. Your school will submit your form to Riverina Institute on your behalf. Epressions of Interest are accepted from June to November the year previous to commencing the course. Registering your interest by submitting a form does not mean you are committed to completing the course, nor does it guaranteed acceptance it s only an epression of interest at this stage. Offers of placement into courses are made and, on acceptance, your school delegate will advise you of the details including the start date. 4

Registered students will complete an Enrolment Confirmation Form once classes have started. MAKING SELECTIONS... Make your course selections based on educational and vocational needs and preferences. The career advisor or TVET coordinator at your school can help you with this. Or contact Riverina Institute and your local School Engagement Officer can also offer advice to assist you to choose a career pathway. You and your parents are encouraged to attend subject selection information sessions held at your school where one of Riverina Institute s School Engagement Officers will be able to provide you with more information on any of our TVET courses. ATTENDANCE AT TAFE... TAFE is an adult learning environment. As a TVET student, we encourage you to be self-directed and self-motivated in your learning. You also need to show commitment to your course, both in attendance and attitude. Get involved in your own learning and make the most of it. As TVET courses are scheduled for a set number of hours, it s epected that you attend ALL of your classes and stay for the duration. If you don t, your school will be notified of your absence. Assessment tasks tend to be held on a continuous basis and are competency based, so if you miss a class it can be very difficult to catch up on the missed work and this will affect your progress in the course. If your attendance is poor and /or you miss assessment events without giving notice, you and your school will be issued with a warning letter. If your attendance, effort or attitude doesn t improve after two warning letters, you will be issued with an Non Completion Determination, which means you will NOT be able to count your TAFE TVET course as units of study towards your Preliminary or HSC year. WORK PLACEMENT... Work placement involves time working in the industry area of your course. It gives you the chance to learn industry skills and to put into practice the skills you ve already learnt as part of your TVET course. A Framework course has mandatory work placement of 70 hours (that s 2 weeks full time) over the duration of the course. If you don t meet this requirement you will automatically receive a Non Completion Determination. This is a Board of Studies requirement. Work placement will help you to understand the epectations of the industry area, gain insights into your chosen career path, make informed decisions about further training and study requirements, and be job ready. WHAT SHOULD I WEAR? TAFE is an adult learning environment and dress standards need to be appropriate to the course you are studying. If school regulations state that you must wear a school uniform then you must abide by this rule. Should personal protective equipment (PPE) be required for your course, you will be provided with it and you must bring this equipment to each TVET session. Failure to bring your PPE will result in your eclusion from the workshop and you will have to return to school. Your school and /or parent / caregiver will be notified in the event that this is required. HSC EXAMS... All students who study a framework course are epected to undertake the Trial HSC Eam generally held in July. This, and your course performance up until the date of the trial, will be used to provide an estimated mark to the Board of Studies. Framework courses have a final HSC eam attached to them, which you will complete through your school not through TAFE. However, your TAFE teacher will assist you to prepare for the eam. DO I GET A TAFE CERTIFICATE AT THE END OF MY COURSE? At the end of your TVET course, you may receive two sets of credentials. If you meet the Board of Studies HSC requirements, your TVET course will be included on your HSC. If you have course completed you will also receive a TAFE NSW academic transcript for a Certificate I, Certificate II or Statement of Attainment towards a higher Certificate level. If you have not completed all units of competency you will receive a TAFE NSW transcript listing units completed. SCHOOL BASED APPRENTICESHIPS AND TRAINEESHIPS... School based apprenticeships and traineeships are available to all Year 10, 11 and 12 high school students. They provide an opportunity for you to work towards a nationally recognised vocational education and training (VET) qualification as part of your HSC and in some cases may also count towards an ATAR score. School based apprenticeships and traineeships combine paid work, training and school, and involve both on-the-job and off-the-job components of training, whilst completing other HSC subjects. On-the-job training is generally one day per week, but there are minimum requirements for different trades which may require additional onthe-job training during holiday periods. The qualification may be undertaken over one or two years to fit it with eisting school requirements. Training undertaken is recognised for eample, a successfully completed school based apprenticeship would allow the student to commence the second year of a mainstream apprenticeship in January following their HSC year.
