Joe Gentry Introduces GT-G2A in Abu Dhabi Joe Gentry, Director-Global Licensing, made a presentation at the recent International Refining & Petrochemical Conference (IRPC) in Abu Dhabi. Joe spoke on GTC s GT-G2A process for gas to aromatics. Joe explained that the technology is a novel means to convert natural gas to liquids using a methane coupling method of synthesis. The technology is also available for propylene (GT-G2P), butadiene (GT-G2BD) and EB/styrene (GT- G2EBS). "This is a breakthrough technology using natural gas as the raw material for petrochemical production," said Joe.
GTC Beijing Ping Pong Tournament After many rounds of intense competition, the results of GTC Beijing s first ping pong tournament are in...... and the winners are Xueling Feng (Silver), Zhepeng Liu (biting the Gold to see if it s real) and Xuebin Wang (Bronze). How did Dairy Ashford get its name? By Bryant Slimp We come to GTC s Houston office every day at 1001 South Dairy Ashford but where did that unusual street name come from? A hundred years ago or more, roads were often named by the two areas or towns that the road connected, such as Barker-Cypress, Bammel-North Houston, Aldine-Bender, Stella Link and Alief-Clodine. So, let s start at the south end of Dairy Ashford. In the 1890s, a small community formed near the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railroad (called the SA&AP or the SAP ). It was most likely a stop on the railroad for steam engines to take on water and for the local farmers to load cans of milk onto the train that was referred to as the Dinky. By 1894, surveyors had named the town Dairy. The first two people to move to Dairy in 1895 were Dr. John S. Magee and his wife, Alief Ozelda Magee. Ms. Magee set up the post office in her house. Originally, the U.S. Post Office denied an application for the name Dairy since the town sounded too much like another town called Daisy, Texas. Their decision was a bit strange as Daisy was located in northeast Texas, several hundred miles from Dairy. Ultimately, the U. S. Post Office decided to use the name Alief after Ms. Magee, and avoid the confusion with Daisy. Dairy continued to grow, even after almost being flattened by the Great Hurricane of 1900. The SA&AP railroad built a depot in 1902. The town was officially renamed Alief, Texas, in 1917 and the Dairy School District became the Alief Independent School District. Houston grew and eventually absorbed the town of Alief. Alief Magee in front of the Alief Railroad Depot around 1902 Now, let s move to the north end of the road. The Houston and Texas Central Railroad served this area toward Hempstead and Highway 6 on the way to Dallas. There were small communities along the route such as Fairbanks, Cypress, Hockley and Waller, and one of the water stops was known as the Ashford water stop. Looking at an old map of Houston, the line from the Dairy/Alief area to the Ashford/ Satsuma area indicates the future location of Dairy Ashford Road. As Houston grew and streets developed, it was natural for the new north-south road in the western area of the city to be named Dairy Ashford Road.
